Dave Thomas grew up in Atlantic City, New Jersey and did not graduate high school, instead obtaining his GED later in life. He was raised by adoptive parents and spent much time with his grandmother who taught him values of service and respect. Thomas opened his first Wendy's restaurant in Columbus, Ohio in 1969, naming it after his young daughter whose nickname was Wendy. He founded the Wendy's franchise company and led it to success with popular products like Frosty's and hamburgers. As the leader, Thomas demonstrated goal orientation, personal initiative, and self-confidence.
