The first step towards understanding data assets’ impact on your organization is understanding what those assets mean for each other. Metadata – literally, data about data – is a practice area required by good systems development, and yet is also perhaps the most mislabeled and misunderstood Data Management practice. Understanding metadata and its associated technologies as more than just straightforward technological tools can provide powerful insight into the efficiency of organizational practices and enable you to combine practices into sophisticated techniques supporting larger and more complex business initiatives. Program learning objectives include:
- Understanding how to leverage metadata practices in support of business strategy
- Discuss foundational metadata concepts
- Guiding principles for and lessons previously learned from metadata and its practical uses applied strategy
Metadata strategies include:
- Metadata is a gerund so don’t try to treat it as a noun
- Metadata is the language of Data Governance
- Treat glossaries/repositories as capabilities, not technology

Glossaries, Dictionaries, and Catalogs Result in Data GovernanceDATAVERSITY
Data catalogs, business glossaries, and data dictionaries house metadata that is important to your organization’s governance of data. People in your organization need to be engaged in leveraging the tools, understanding the data that is available, who is responsible for the data, and knowing how to get their hands on the data to perform their job function. The metadata will not govern itself.
Join Bob Seiner for the webinar where he will discuss how glossaries, dictionaries, and catalogs can result in effective Data Governance. People must have confidence in the metadata associated with the data that you need them to trust. Therefore, the metadata in your data catalog, business glossary, and data dictionary must result in governed data. Learn how glossaries, dictionaries, and catalogs can result in Data Governance in this webinar.
Bob will discuss the following subjects in this webinar:
- Successful Data Governance relies on value from very important tools
- What it means to govern your data catalog, business glossary, and data dictionary
- Why governing the metadata in these tools is important
- The roles necessary to govern these tools
- Governance expected from metadata in catalogs, glossaries, and dictionaries
Data Governance Takes a Village (So Why is Everyone Hiding?)DATAVERSITY
Data governance represents both an obstacle and opportunity for enterprises everywhere. And many individuals may hesitate to embrace the change. Yet if led well, a governance initiative has the potential to launch a data community that drives innovation and data-driven decision-making for the wider business. (And yes, it can even be fun!). So how do you build a roadmap to success?
This session will gather four governance experts, including Mary Williams, Associate Director, Enterprise Data Governance at Exact Sciences, and Bob Seiner, author of Non-Invasive Data Governance, for a roundtable discussion about the challenges and opportunities of leading a governance initiative that people embrace. Business Value Through Reference and Master Data StrategiesDATAVERSITY
Data tends to pile up and can be rendered unusable or obsolete without careful maintenance processes. Reference and Master Data Management (MDM) has been a popular Data Management approach to effectively gain mastery over not just the data but the supporting architecture for processing it. This webinar presents MDM as a strategic approach to improving and formalizing practices around those data items that provide context for many organizational transactions — the master data. Too often, MDM has been implemented technology-first and achieved the same very poor track record (one-third succeeding on time, within budget, and achieving planned functionality). MDM success depends on a coordinated approach, typically involving Data Governance and Data Quality activities.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand foundational reference and MDM concepts based on the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBoK)
• Understand why these are an important component of your Data Architecture
• Gain awareness of reference and MDM frameworks and building blocks
• Know what MDM guiding principles consist of and best practices
• Know how to utilize reference and MDM in support of business strategy

Metadata—literally, data about data—is one of many data management disciplines inherent in good systems development, and is perhaps the most mislabeled and misunderstood out of the lot. Understanding metadata and its associated technologies as more than just straightforward technological tools can provide powerful insight, the efficiency of organizational practices, and can also enable you to combine more sophisticated data management techniques in support of larger and more complex business initiatives.
In this webinar, we will:
Illustrate how to leverage metadata in support of your business strategy
Discuss foundational metadata concepts based on the DAMA Guide to Data Management Book of Knowledge (DAMA DMBOK)
Enumerate guiding principles for and lessons previously learned from metadata and its practical uses
Essential Reference and Master Data ManagementDATAVERSITY
Data tends to pile up and can be rendered unusable or obsolete without careful maintenance processes. Reference and Master Data Management (MDM) has been a popular Data Management approach to effectively gain mastery over not just the data but the supporting architecture for processing it. This webinar presents MDM as a strategic approach to improving and formalizing practices around those data items that provide context for many organizational transactions: its master data. Too often, MDM has been implemented technology-first and achieved the same very poor track record (one-third succeeding on-time, within budget, and achieving planned functionality). MDM success depends on a coordinated approach typically involving Data Governance and Data Quality activities.
Learning objectives:
- Understand foundational reference and MDM concepts based on the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK)
- Understand why these are an important component of your Data Architecture
- Gain awareness of Reference and MDM Frameworks and building blocks
- Know what MDM guiding principles consist of and best practices
- Know how to utilize reference and MDM in support of business strategy

Because every organization produces and propagates data as part of their day-to-day operations, data trends are becoming more and more important in the mainstream business world’s consciousness. For many organizations in various industries, though, comprehension of this development begins and ends with buzzwords such as “big data,” “NoSQL,” “data scientist,” and so on. Few realize that any and all solutions to their business problems, regardless of platform or relevant technology, rely to a critical extent on the data model supporting them. As such, Data Modeling is not an optional task for an organization’s data effort, but rather a vital activity that facilitates the solutions driving your business. Since quality engineering/architecture work products do not happen accidentally, the more your organization depends on automation, the more important are the data models driving the engineering and architecture activities o
Too often I hear the question “Can you help me with our data strategy?” Unfortunately, for most, this is the wrong request because it focuses on the least valuable component: the data strategy itself. A more useful request is: “Can you help me apply data strategically?” Yes, at early maturity phases the process of developing strategic thinking about data is more important than the actual product! Trying to write a good (must less perfect) data strategy on the first attempt is generally not productive –particularly given the widespread acceptance of Mike Tyson’s truism: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” This program refocuses efforts on learning how to iteratively improve the way data is strategically applied. This will permit data-based strategy components to keep up with agile, evolving organizational strategies. It also contributes to three primary organizational data goals. Learn how to improve the following:
- Your organization’s data
- The way your people use data
- The way your people use data to achieve your organizational strategy
This will help in ways never imagined. Data are your sole non-depletable, non-degradable, durable strategic assets, and they are pervasively shared across every organizational area. Addressing existing challenges programmatically includes overcoming necessary but insufficient prerequisites and developing a disciplined, repeatable means of improving business objectives. This process (based on the theory of constraints) is where the strategic data work really occurs as organizations identify prioritized areas where better assets, literacy, and support (data strategy components) can help an organization better achieve specific strategic objectives. Then the process becomes lather, rinse, and repeat. Several complementary concepts are also covered, including:
- A cohesive argument for why data strategy is necessary for effective data governance
- An overview of prerequisites for effective strategic use of data strategy, as well as common pitfalls
- A repeatable process for identifying and removing data constraints
- The importance of balancing business operation and innovation
A knowledge graph is a type of data representation that utilizes a network of interconnected nodes to represent real-world entities and the relationships between them. This makes it an ideal tool for data discovery, compliance, and governance tasks, as it allows users to easily navigate and understand complex data sets.
In this webinar, we will demystify knowledge graphs and explore their various applications in data discovery, compliance, and governance. We will begin by discussing the basics of knowledge graphs and how they differ from other data representation methods. Next, we will delve into specific use cases for knowledge graphs in data discovery, such as for exploring and understanding large and complex datasets or for identifying hidden patterns and relationships in data.
We will also discuss how knowledge graphs can be used in compliance and governance tasks, such as for tracking changes to data over time or for auditing data to ensure compliance with regulations. Throughout the webinar, we will provide practical examples and case studies to illustrate the benefits of using knowledge graphs in these contexts.
Finally, we will cover best practices for implementing and maintaining a knowledge graph, including tips for choosing the right technology and data sources, and strategies for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the data within the graph.
Overall, this webinar will provide an executive level overview of knowledge graphs and their applications in data discovery, compliance, and governance, and will equip attendees with the tools and knowledge they need to successfully implement and utilize knowledge graphs in their own organizations.

Data-Ed Online: Approaching Data QualityDATAVERSITY
Good data is like good water: best served fresh, and ideally well-filtered. Data Management strategies can produce tremendous procedural improvements and increased profit margins across the board, but only if the data being managed is of high quality. Determining how Data Quality should be engineered provides a useful framework for utilizing Data Quality management effectively in support of business strategy. This, in turn, allows for speedy identification of business problems, the delineation between structural and practice-oriented defects in Data Management, and proactive prevention of future issues. Organizations must realize what it means to utilize Data Quality engineering in support of business strategy. This webinar will illustrate how organizations with chronic business challenges often can trace the root of the problem to poor Data Quality. Showing how Data Quality should be engineered provides a useful framework in which to develop an effective approach. This, in turn, allows organizations to more quickly identify business problems as well as data problems caused by structural issues versus practice-oriented defects and prevent these from re-occurring.
Learning Objectives:
Help you understand foundational Data Quality concepts based on the DAMA Guide to Data Management Book of Knowledge (DAMA DMBoK), as well as guiding principles, best practices, and steps for improving Data Quality at your organization
Demonstrate how chronic business challenges for organizations are often rooted in poor Data Quality

Data Lake Architecture – Modern Strategies & ApproachesDATAVERSITY
Data Lake or Data Swamp? By now, we’ve likely all heard the comparison. Data Lake architectures have the opportunity to provide the ability to integrate vast amounts of disparate data across the organization for strategic business analytic value. But without a proper architecture and metadata management strategy in place, a Data Lake can quickly devolve into a swamp of information that is difficult to understand. This webinar will offer practical strategies to architect and manage your Data Lake in a way that optimizes its success.
Whether you call it data munging, data cleansing, or data wrangling, everyone agrees that data preparation activities account for 80% of analysts’ time, leaving only 20% for analysis. Shifting this work to more specialized talent represents a major source of data analysis productivity improvements. This program “walks” through the major preparation categories including collection, evaluation, evolution, access design, and storage requirements. Understanding each in context also provides opportunities to develop complementary Data Governance/ethics frameworks. A generalized approach is presented.
Learning objectives:

Data Systems Integration & Business Value Pt. 1: MetadataDATAVERSITY
Certain systems are more data focused than others. Usually their primary focus is on accomplishing integration of disparate data. In these cases, failure is most often attributable to the adoption of a single pillar (silver bullet). The three webinars in the Data Systems Integration and Business Value series are designed to illustrate that good systems development more often depends on at least three DM disciplines (pie wedges) in order to provide a solid foundation.
Much of the discussion of metadata focuses on understanding it and the associated technologies. While these are important, they represent a typical tool/technology focus and this has not achieved significant results to date. A more relevant question when considering pockets of metadata is: Whether to include them in the scope organizational metadata practices. By understanding what it means to include items in the scope of your metadata practices, you can begin to build systems that allow you to practice sophisticated ways to advance their data management and supported business initiatives. After a bit of practice in this manner you can position your organization to better exploit any and all metadata technologies.

DataEd Slides: Growing Practical Data Governance ProgramsDATAVERSITY
At its core, Data Governance (DG) is managing data with guidance. This immediately provokes the question: Would you tolerate any of your assets to be managed without guidance? (In all likelihood, your organization has been managing data without adequate guidance, and this accounts for its current, less-than-optimal state.) This program provides a practical guide to implementing DG or recharging your existing program. It provides an understanding of what Data Governance functions are required and how they fit with other Data Management disciplines. Understanding these aspects is a necessary prerequisite to eliminate the ambiguity that often surrounds initial discussions and implement effective Data Governance/stewardship programs that manage data in support of the organizational strategy. Program learning objectives include:

How a Semantic Layer Makes Data Mesh Work at ScaleDATAVERSITY
Data Mesh is a trending approach to building a decentralized data architecture by leveraging a domain-oriented, self-service design. However, the pure definition of Data Mesh lacks a center of excellence or central data team and doesn’t address the need for a common approach for sharing data products across teams. The semantic layer is emerging as a key component to supporting a Hub and Spoke style of organizing data teams by introducing data model sharing, collaboration, and distributed ownership controls.
This session will explain how data teams can define common models and definitions with a semantic layer to decentralize analytics product creation using a Hub and Spoke architecture.
Attend this session to learn about:
- The role of a Data Mesh in the modern cloud architecture.
- How a semantic layer can serve as the binding agent to support decentralization.
- How to drive self service with consistency and control.

6. We work with teams to build the capabilities to control and
deploy metadata to power innovation and manage compliance
● Create meaning and enrich data assets through conceptual (semantic)
mapping of metadata
● Govern data policies to ensure safe, structured collaboration
● Enable discovery by automating data cataloging (replacing Axon)
● Accelerate product creation by enabling real-time data use
This provides the framework to build a “source of truth” for the structure,
characteristics, connections, and contours amongst all enterprise data
7. Your Benefits
● Increased team collaboration limiting data stovepipes and silos
● Enhanced discoverability, uniform structure (for machine-driven models), and
native extensibility and enrichment increasing consumption of data in new
product development by ~25%
● Data sensitivity and security vulnerability reporting time cut in half
● More optimized use and re-use of source data with minimizing wastage
(duplication, redundancy, quality control) and decreasing storage costs by 4-
6%
Conservatively, customers in similar deployments realize an estimated 2.5-3.5x ROI in 3 years

8. Knowledge Graphs For…
CDOs solve mission-critical problems with our TopBraid EDG solution:
Transaction data is often an unmined trove for
identifying bad actors. AI models are most
effective in mining with highly nimble models with
dynamic feature identification to ensure speed and
accuracy for minimizing fraud risk
Creating new financial and business products to
drive growth relies interconnectedness of data
assets within an organization. Semantic data
catalogs enable fast, easy, intuitive discovery of
the “best of” to inform the “next greatest”
Rapid response to technological vulnerabilities is
essential to avoid major cybersecurity threats.
Technical metadata graphs can enable automatic
threat detection to enable experts to fix or
neutralize threats before they happen
Reporting needs within financial institutions are
constantly changing. Graphs of regulatory policies
can serve as a source of truth for CDOs to support
compliance teams and minimize regulatory risk
A single view of a customer with its
interconnections and touchpoints within large
financial institutions can be powerful to drive
deeper engagement and revenue
Implementing best practices of data governance
shouldn’t slow down daily work. Centralized policy
graphs and governance workflows can ensure that
policies - such as PCI DSS - are enacted
efficiently without hindering insight and innovation
