Thd minimization of modular multilevel converter with unequal dc valuesGhazal Falahi
Different modulation techniques used to control multilevel converters can be classified based on the selected converter topology and optimization goals. Among all proposed modulation methods low switching frequency modulation techniques are very popular for multilevel converters yet non-real time low switching frequency methods cannot be applied to multilevel converters with unequal or varying DC values because these modulation techniques rely on look up tables and the size of look up tables will be huge in this case. This paper proposes a new modular multilevel converter (MMC) structure with unequal DC values. Some well-known low switching frequency modulation techniques and the commonly used PWM based methods are compared and using the new low switching frequency modulation technique called minimal total harmonic distortion (THD) modulation for MMC with unequal DC values is proposed. The PSCAD simulation results show that the new converter topology with unequal DC values has much lower THD compared to the typical MMC. Modulation algorithm is implemented in digital signal processor (DSP) and controller hardware in the loop (CHIL) implementation in RTDS verifies the real-time performance of the algorithm.

Present day industrial applications require higher power apparatus for power conversion. At medium
voltage grid, to connect only one power semiconductor switch directly is a not practically successful
concept. To overcome this multilevel power converter structure has been introduced and studied as an
alternative in high power and medium voltage applications. Renewable energy sources like photovoltaic,
wind, fuel cells can be conveniently interfaced to a multilevel converter system for high power applications.
In this study it is discussed in detail for different levels of the multilevel converters using pulse width
modulation technique (PWM) the harmonics contents decreases gradually. The simulated results are
presented and compared thereafter. Total harmonic distortion decreases as the number of levels increased
are tabulated accordingly. All the simulation results are carried out under MATLAB/Simulink environment.

State of Wisconsin DB2 highway inventory database.
Relevant Work Experience
For the WI Department of Transportation was responsible for
the detail design, coding, and testing of systems for loading and
maintaining the new highway inventory DB2 database. Was also
responsible for the analysis, design, coding, testing, and
implementation of the dynamically called subroutine for the
conversion of highway segment old location data from the visual to
the new GIS location system.
Control break programs assemble highway inventory data. At
control break time the gets called to convert the highway segment
from the visual to the GUI location system. The inventory and
location data are then used to load data into the DB2 database
using SQL table row inserts updates and deletes.
For the WI Department of Transportation, was responsible for
the detail design, coding, and testing for the addition of metric
data to the online DB2, and batch DB2 bridge data systems.
The data entry portion of the on-line was converted to metric
input, with the maintenance of English data behind the scenes on
the database. Validation edits and error processing were added to
keep both the metric and English data within their respective
ranges on the database.
3. For Educational Service Center 20 in San Antonio, Texas
participated as team member facilitating an Oracle database
extraction, conversion, and load of a Sybase database. The
database design of the new Sybase database is different from the
Oracle. Flat files were used to extract the data. SQL aggregate
functions, table joins, and COBOL programming were used to write
the data to the flat files used to load the Sybase database.
