Guatemala IFRI Report 2013
The CRC report summarizes the activities of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala research team from 2012-2013. The team conducted forest cover monitoring across Guatemala from 1991-2010 and is working on a 2012 map. Deforestation rates have decreased from 1.7% to 1% due to more regeneration. A study on the effects of migration and remittances on land use change was conducted across 8 sites. The team is also working on REDD+ initiatives through a USAID-funded project and developing national monitoring systems. Other projects include studying coffee farmer adaptation and indigenous biodiversity. Training events on socio-ecological modeling and decision tools are planned for 2014.

The National Park Service preserves national parks for public enjoyment, education, and inspiration now and for future generations. It cooperates with partners to promote conservation and outdoor recreation both in the US and worldwide. Each National Park Service team works with partner parks to address issues like invasive species through collaboration, inventory, prevention, treatment and restoration. The Southwest region contains 52 parks and 30 refuges and faces problems from invasive plants like tamarisk, Russian olive, and buffelgrass. Invasive species are a major threat to biodiversity.

Our native crop wild relatives have proved useful as genetic resources in breeding better food, forage and feed, industrial, and ornamental crops. Their utilization is expected only to increase with better information on the species and improving breeding tools, but may well be constrained by their limited representation in conservation systems and the ongoing loss of wild populations due to habitat modification, invasive species, climate change and other impacts. Complementary ex situ and in situ conservation efforts for native crop genetic resources are therefore warranted, with species-specific requirements, and the necessity for education and outreach in conservation, making collaboration across conservation institutions the most prudent way forward. We present foundational information useful to collaborative efforts. An inventory of U.S. crop wild relatives has prioritized taxa related to a broad range of important crops. Utilizing occurrence data gathered from herbaria and genebanks in combination with expert inputs, resulting potential distribution models are enabling the identification of hotspots of taxonomic diversity of wild relatives in the country, and a ‘gap analysis’ methodology is facilitating efforts to identify those taxa and geographic areas of particular conservation concern. Results indicate that a broad range of wild relative diversity remains to be conserved. Numerous populations of high priority taxa could be actively managed in existing conservation areas, although many are distributed in areas without long-term habitat protection. We discuss the value of collaboration across agriculture and botanic garden organizations to better conserve our nation’s heritage of crop wild relatives.
Lessons for Aquatic Protected Areas from Marine and Freshwater Experiences
Marine protected areas (MPAs) and freshwater protected areas (FPAs) share many commonalities in their design, establishment and management, suggesting great potential for sharing lessons learned. However, surprisingly little has been exchanged to date, and both realms of inquiry and practice have progressed mostly independent of each other. Both MPAs and FPAs, collectively Aquatic Protected Areas (APAs), are frequently used as community fisheries management tools to support the sustainability of small-scale fisheries. In a transdisciplinary effort to explore crossover lessons between marine and freshwater realms, a team of researchers synthesized case studies of four MPAs and five FPAs (or clusters of FPAs) from nine countries, including Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, and the United States. This presentation explores similarities, differences, and transferable lessons between MPAs and FPAs under five themes: 1) ecological system; 2) establishment approaches; 3) effectiveness monitoring; 4) sustaining APAs; and 5) challenges and external threats. In particular, the findings indicate many similarities around the human dimension of both MPA and FPA establishment and management, which highlight clear opportunities for exchanging lessons related to stakeholder engagement and community support. Additionally, similar socioeconomic and governance assessment methods could be used to address gaps in effectiveness data in both realms. Continued exchange between MPAs and FPAs, as well as increased transdisciplinary collaboration would benefit both realms, and practitioners could work together to address shared challenges, such as developing mechanisms for diversified and sustained funding, and employing integrated coastal/watershed management to address system-level threats.

Tracking and camera stations were used to document fisher (Martes pennanti) behavior in Vermont forests over two months. Fifty-eight photos showed 12 visits by fishers, with more activity in March during breeding season. Photos revealed behaviors like scent marking on logs and sticks. Non-invasive tracking and cameras allowed observation without disturbing fishers and provided information about their presence and behaviors.

This research article studied the behavior of domestic emus on a farm to improve their management and welfare. The researchers observed 8 emus over 12 days, recording their behaviors every 30 minutes. They identified major behaviors like eating, drinking, standing, walking, grooming, socializing, vocalizing, and resting. The emus spent most of their time walking, standing, and eating. When moved to a new pen, the emus initially huddled together away from resident birds. The time spent on different activities did not differ between males and females. The study provided information on common emu behaviors that can help assess their welfare.

The aye-aye is a nocturnal primate found only on Madagascar. It is the largest nocturnal primate and has an average lifespan of 20 years. However, they face threats of local extinction from superstitions that lead to killing and deforestation that destroys their habitat. Conservation efforts include reserves in Madagascar and captive breeding programs.

[1] 114 plant species from 28 families were identified in the area. The present study was designed to record the distribution of ground dwelling spider genera among berseem crop at Okara district. Sampling was made from Trifolium crop on fortnight basis through pitfall traps. Equal number of traps were placed in three rows e.g. along the boundary, middle of the field and centre of the field. Each trap was filled with mixture solution of alcohol and glycerin (70:30%) along with few drops of kerosene oil. After 5 days interval sample traps was collected and spider specimens were washed with distilled water and permanently stored in labeled glass vials, and brought into the Pest Control Laboratory, Departmentof Zoology, Wildlife and Fisheries, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Thereafter, each spider specimen was identified according to the taxonomic material and internet source. Identified data was analyzed statistically to quantify their spatial distribution. Overall maximum spatial distribution of spider population was documented in middle transect than boundary and centre of the berseem crop. It was also observed that temperature, humidity, vegetation and prey availability were the major factors that effecting the spider population. Population variations were recorded during the months of February, March and April in 2015, due to rise of temperature, decrease of humidity and availability of prey. It was concluded that despite to cosmopolitan nature, spiders have some correlation with suitable local conditions or habitat. More over, spiders are cost effective, functionally significant and play a key role in regulating decomposer population. Tracking and camera stations were used to document fisher (Martes pennanti) behavior in Vermont forests over two months. Fifty-eight photos showed 12 visits by fishers, with more activity in March during breeding season. Photos revealed behaviors like scent marking on logs and sticks. Non-invasive tracking and cameras allowed observation without disturbing fishers and provided information about their presence and behaviors.

This research article studied the behavior of domestic emus on a farm to improve their management and welfare. The researchers observed 8 emus over 12 days, recording their behaviors every 30 minutes. They identified major behaviors like eating, drinking, standing, walking, grooming, socializing, vocalizing, and resting. The emus spent most of their time walking, standing, and eating. When moved to a new pen, the emus initially huddled together away from resident birds. The time spent on different activities did not differ between males and females. The present study was designed to record the distribution of ground dwelling spider genera among berseem crop at Okara district. Sampling was made from Trifolium crop on fortnight basis through pitfall traps. Equal number of traps were placed in three rows e.g. along the boundary, middle of the field and centre of the field. Each trap was filled with mixture solution of alcohol and glycerin (70:30%) along with few drops of kerosene oil. After 5 days interval sample traps was collected and spider specimens were washed with distilled water and permanently stored in labeled glass vials, and brought into the Pest Control Laboratory, Departmentof Zoology, Wildlife and Fisheries, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Thereafter, each spider specimen was identified according to the taxonomic material and internet source. Identified data was analyzed statistically to quantify their spatial distribution. Overall maximum spatial distribution of spider population was documented in middle transect than boundary and centre of the berseem crop. It was also observed that temperature, humidity, vegetation and prey availability were the major factors that effecting the spider population. Population variations were recorded during the months of February, March and April in 2015, due to rise of temperature, decrease of humidity and availability of prey. It was concluded that despite to cosmopolitan nature, spiders have some correlation with suitable local conditions or habitat. More over, spiders are cost effective, functionally significant and play a key role in regulating decomposer population. The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.
Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.
