Exam statistics are far more than an evaluation of student knowledge and retention. Assessment data provide limitless insights into curricular structure, our performance as instructors, and teaching methods. While there is great utility in reviewing how we can improve our teaching and assessment methods, we are selling ourselves short as professionals if we stop there. The robust statistics that can be extracted from student assessment can also be used for scholarly research projects and to prove our successes in the classroom. This presentation will address the process of utilizing ExamSoft categorization techniques to both harness useful exam statistics and then apply them in data-driven research projects—creating scholarly activities to build a professional portfolio and prepare for promotion and tenure.

217,555 students across 652 schools in 65 counties registered for an online classroom assessment system called ClassScape. The system provides over 56,254 assessment items aligned to curriculum objectives to help teachers evaluate student understanding, identify strengths and weaknesses, and monitor progress. Teachers can create custom tests or use pre-made tests, set flexible schedules, and get reports to guide instruction while students practice computer skills.

A pilot study was conducted to test and modify the research instruments. So far, 40 questionnaires have been collected from 3 schools, and 6 teachers agreed to keep reflective journals. However, scheduled observations and interviews were often postponed. The researcher plans to analyze questionnaire data quantitatively and content analyze open-ended responses thematically. Examples of technology used in some classrooms are shown.

Survey results final version
The survey found that respondents agreed with 5 key eLearning trends: personalized learning, responsive content, specialized materials, content curation, and self-directed learning. Creating learning objectives was identified as fundamental to content creation. Respondents were unfamiliar with the Tin Can API technology. The main challenges in content creation were lack of resources, complex tools, and shrinking budgets. Usability and simplicity were the main factors sought in authoring tools.

Footholds and Foundations: Setting Freshmen on the Path to Lifelong Learning
This document summarizes the development and results of a software tool created to assess student learning from library instruction sessions at the University of North Texas. The software allows for anonymous pre- and post-testing of students to measure changes in skills like database searching and finding help from a librarian. Teachers can annotate strong exemplar answers to highlight areas of knowledge, application, analysis, and evaluation that earned full marks, comparing them to lower-scoring answers. Teachers can also have students mark exam questions using rubrics to familiarize them with scoring criteria. Additionally, exemplars can be used for model writing during lessons.

Using Exam Analytics to Evaluate Student Use of Lecture Capture Recordings

Lecture capture has become increasingly popular in higher and professional education programs. At OSU-CHS, we have observed that students have become increasingly more comfortable and reliant upon using these products as study aids and at times, as a replacement for attending lecture based courses. However, we question whether this is this a sound pedagogical approach for students to learn material and succeed on assessments. Does the availability of content and student use of lecture capture add value to their learning experience? Using our computer-based assessment software, we have categorized our exam items to their corresponding lecture capture recording in order to explore a relationship between student views of recordings and their performance on course assessments. Consequently, this presentation explores the relationship between student use of lecture capture resource(s) and student performance on assessments. Throughout the presentation, participants will learn about our process, our findings, and our plans for maximizing curricular use of lecture capture to improve student outcomes.
Question, question

The study aimed to evaluate the readiness of academic staff at South Valley University in Egypt to develop and implement e-learning. It assessed staff competencies, experiences, and attitudes regarding e-learning. A survey was administered to 233 staff members to measure these three dimensions. Results found that staff had positive attitudes towards e-learning but lacked technical competencies, training, and experience developing e-learning. The study recommends that the university provide training programs and technical support to help staff overcome barriers to e-learning adoption.
Principles of Effective Technology Integration

University of Michigan CRLT Study of LectureTools and Laptop Use

Audience response systems (ARS) permit students to answer electronically displayed multiple-choice questions using a remote control device. In higher education, more and more lecturers use ARS to engage their students more intensively, especially when it comes to mass lectures. This paper deals with the questions how ARS as an innovative technology can foster the feedback of students during ex-cathedra teaching and how this feedback can contribute to quality assurance in academic teaching. The examination of advantages and challenges of using ARS as well as of their didactical and technical potentials combines theoretical considerations with an online survey among the more than two hundred students enrolled in a mass lecture held in winter term 2015 at the University of Innsbruck. Additionally, the responsible lecturers were asked to share their experience using an ARS for the first time. Designing and Conducting Formative Evaluation

This session reports the results of a recent OLT-funded national exploratory study addressing the relevant factors and their impact when implementing learning analytics for student retention purposes. The project utilised a mixed-method research design and yielded a series of outputs, including the development of a non-technical overview of learning analytics, focusing on linking the fields of student retention and learning analytics resulting in an institution level survey focusing on sector readiness and decision making relating to utilising learning analytics for retention purposes. An academic level survey was administered to academic staff exploring their progress, aspirations and support needs relating to learning analytics. Follow-up interviews expanded on their experiences with learning analytics to date. An evidence-based framework was developed, mapping important factors affecting learning analytics decision making and implementation. This was illustrated by a suite of five case studies developed by each of the research partner institutions detailing their experiences with learning analytics and demonstrating why elements in the framework are important. These findings were shared and tested at a National Forum in April 2015.

As technology evolves and shapes our public discourse, and students continue to engage with technology on a daily basis, it becomes imperative for classrooms to serve as spaces to teach responsible uses of technology while meeting the diverse needs of students and the various ways they access technology. There is an additional level of urgency as our reliance on
technology shapes the economy, political discourses, and how we understand each other.

- 1. Data sources Teacher Questionnaire The questionnaire is done pre-observation. It is done to gather the teachers and students’strengths and weaknesses in the classroom as far as reading comprehension, technology use during reading comprehension, and the use of questioning. The questionnaire will consist of the following questions; • The teachers’ use of questioning • The teachers’ use of technology in reading comprehension • How the teachers are or are not comfortable using technology in their classroom • How do your students respond to technology use in reading comprehension? • Do you teach self-questioning? • What is an area you could improve on as far as reading comprehension instruction? Performance Check List The performance check list is used to keep track of the teachers’ use of questioning in the classroom during the three visits. It consists of the following criteria: Use of technology during the lesson or use of technology to make the lesson Number of questioning strategies used Number of uses of “questioning” during the lesson Pertaining to the uses of “questioning” tally, how many of them resulted in a gain of student knowledge (how many were effective) Along with this check list, an anecdotal record will be kept of the questions and answers given in the observed classes for reference. Rating Scale Using the performance check list teachers will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5. One will be not effective, three will be effective, and five will be highly effective. The rating scale will be reported and each teacher will receive an overall average of 1 to 5. The least effective and most effective teachers’ results will be reported and assessed in the results section.
