Governance has little to do with governance…it’s about delivering and demonstrating value. It’s one thing for your colleagues to intellectually believe in the value of data, good data, and governed data, but it’s another thing entirely to have them emotionally engaged and excited to be involved. In this presentation from the CDO Sit-Down series, Shaun Connolly, Vice President of International Strategic Services, shares his thoughts and experience on approaches to win over reluctant leaders and business teams and describe the key components of successful programs.

Building a Data Strategy Your C-Suite Will SupportReid Colson
Being a data leader in any industry is an advantage that creates measurable financial benefits. Many studies have shown this – I’ve seen them from Bain, McKinsey, MIT and more. Since most firms are measured on profit, getting good at making data driven decisions is a key to being competitive. You can't get there without a plan. That is where a data strategy comes in.
In speaking with ~300 firms who indicated that their organizations were effective in using data and analytics, McKinsey found that construction of a data strategy was the number one contributing factor to their success. Being good at using data to drive decisions creates a meaningful profit advantage and those who are leaders indicated that the number one driver of their success was their data strategy.
This presentation will cover what a data strategy is, how to construct one, and how to get buy in from your executive team. The author is a former Fortune 500 Chief Data Officer and has held senior data roles at Capital One and Markel.

The Business Value of Metadata for Data GovernanceRoland Bullivant
In today’s digital economy, data drives the core processes that deliver profitability and growth - from marketing, to finance, to sales, supply chain, and more. It is also likely that for many large organizations much of their key data is retained in application packages from SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Salesforce and others. In order to ensure that their foundational data infrastructure runs smoothly, most organizations have adopted a data governance initiative. These typically focus on the people and processes around managing data and information. Without an actionable link to the physical systems that run key business processes, however, governance programs can often lack the ‘teeth’ to effectively implement business change.
Metadata management is a process that can link business processes and drivers with the technical applications that support them. This makes data governance actionable and relevant in today’s fast-paced and results-driven business environment. One of the challenges facing data governance teams however, is the variety in format, accessibility and complexity of metadata across the organization’s systems.
Federated data organizations in public sector face more challenges today than ever before. As discovered via research performed by North Highland Consulting, these are the top issues you are most likely experiencing:
• Knowing what data is available to support programs and other business functions
• Data is more difficult to access
• Without insight into the lineage of data, it is risky to use as the basis for critical decisions
• Analyzing data and extracting insights to influence outcomes is difficult at best
The solution to solving these challenges lies in creating a holistic enterprise data governance program and enforcing the program with a full-featured enterprise data management platform. Kreig Fields, Principle, Public Sector Data and Analytics, from North Highland Consulting and Rob Karel, Vice President, Product Strategy and Product Marketing, MDM from Informatica will walk through a pragmatic, “How To” approach, full of useful information on how you can improve your agency’s data governance initiatives.
Learn how to kick start your data governance intiatives and how an enterprise data management platform can help you:
• Innovate and expose hidden opportunities
• Break down data access barriers and ensure data is trusted
• Provide actionable information at the speed of business

Governance as a "painkiller": A Business First Approach to Data GovernancePrecisely
Traditional data governance initiatives fail by focusing too heavily on policies, compliance, and enforcement, which quickly lose business interest and support. This leaves data management and governance leaders having to continually make the case for data governance to secure business adoption. In this presentation, we share a lean, business-first data governance approach that connects key initiatives to governance capabilities and quickly delivers business value for the long term.
How to Build Data Governance Programs That Lasts: A Business-First ApproachPrecisely
Data analytics and Artificial Intelligence play an increasingly pivotal role in most modern organizations. To keep those initiatives on track, enterprises must roll out data governance programs to ensure optimal business value. Data governance has become a fundamental element of success, a key to establishing the component of the data integrity framework in any business. The most successful data governance programs use a business-first approach, delivering quick wins and cultivating sustained success throughout the organization. Unfortunately, many organizations neglect to implement such programs until they experience a negative event that highlights the absence of good data governance. That could be a data breach, a breakdown in data quality, or a compliance action that highlights the lack of effective controls. Once that happens, there are several different paths a data governance initiative might take. A typical scenario often plays out this way: The executive team calls for implementation of a company-wide data governance program. The newly-minted data governance team forges ahead, engaging business users throughout the organization and expecting that everyone will be aligned around a common purpose.
Learn how you can drive your business forward with confidence by making decisions based on actionable insights gained from organizational data in real-time.

It can be challenging display and share capacity data that is meaningful to end users. There is an overabundance of data points related to capacity, and the summarization of this data is difficult to construct and display.
You are already spending time and money to handle the critical need to manage systems capacity, performance and estimate future needs. Are you it spending wisely? Are you getting the level of results from your investment that you really need? Can you prove it?
The good news is that the return on investment of implementing capacity management and capacity planning is most definitely positive and provable, both in terms of tangible monetary value and in some less tangible but no-less-valuable benefits.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

8. How on earth did you come
up with “speed dating to
lifelong partnership”?…
• It’s Valentines Day?!?
• The average “life expectancy” of a CDO is 31
months
• I believe, we’ve spoken the wrong language,
focused on what matters to us, not “them”
• So, how do you quickly win hearts & minds,
ensure long-term success and deliver value?
9. Despite all the
talk about data …
• …data and data
integrity for most
is still a “have
to,” not a “want
to.”
Time

Number of things they pay attention to
What someone will
do because they
have to
What someone will
do because they
want to

Understanding the
likeability gap
10. Why is this so challenging?
Data Integrity, BI and Analytics are just,
well, different…
“If I had asked people what
they wanted, they would
have said faster horses.”
― Henry Ford
You had lost me at hello when you asked:
• What data is important to you?
• How do you want to use your data?
• What are your CDE’s (critical data elements)?
• Do you want to be a data owner?
11. Bridging the Gap
The challenge is that ‘Data governance’ is perhaps
the least sexy term on the planet…
and yet, data is
everything.
But the point of governance integrity is NOT
governance
12. The point is delivering outcomes
So, what I hear you saying is you’re are frustrated
because…
Value
New Acquisition
Data captured
Intelligence delivered
Missed Opportunity

latency
• It takes too long to get pricing, negotiate a contract and onboard a new

• It’s nearly impossible to know profitability of a given customer,

get the value expected
