First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.

And this truly is a new way of thinking about data. The existing paradigm for data is one where data is at rest, with the relational database being the center of your data infrastructure.
This worked remarkably well for many years, as it solved the enterprise need to query data and build transactional applications.
But today, this is no longer enough. The challenge today is not just querying a database, The challenge is connecting across multiple systems and siloed lines of business.
This results in most enterprises having an architecture that looks like this. In fact, your architecture very likely looks something like this.
Here you see an untenable amount of point to point connections, and a data architecture that is rigid, complicated and expensive --- making it too difficult, time consuming and cost-prohibitive to innovate. This is the exact visual representation of what it means to be restricted by your infrastructure.
We live in amazing times of change. The world is very different than when I was a kid, and a lot of this is due to technology. We see it all around us in everyday life. My son/daughter doesn’t understand, for example, how this black device there could be called a phone, since it doesn’t seem to do any of the things a phone does. It doesn’t take photos or videos, you can’t play video games, and you can’t message your friends. He/she similarly tries to swipe or pinch-zoom a television screen.
And similar to this, the business world has changed dramatically.
The new paradigm, for data-in-motion, is centered around event streams. Here, data is not static or passive, but continuously evolving and continuously being processed in real-time. Here, the fundamental notion is of data moving, not sitting at rest.
And so what we’ve built is a new type of data platform --- centered around event streams.
Here you see how all those solutions that were connected in that complex web --- are now connected in a seamless manner through a universal event pipeline. And what our customers tell us is essential about event streaming is that this pipeline successfully scales across their business.
On the top you’ll see something entirely new, which is the ability to create a new category of applications --- event streaming applications. These include things like real-time customer interactions, real-time fraud detection, real-time machine learning models, and more.
As our customers mature in fully embracing this architecture, this becomes the central nervous system that enables them to run their business in real-time.
