Data for better lives
1. Data for better Lives!
Hi!
I am Rajasree and I like to think myself as a Data Literacy Evangelist. In this presentation I
would like to share some wonderful resources for research and information about the different
facets of Indian economy.
Suprisingly, unknown to me and many of my ilk, there is a Ministry of Statistics and Programme
Implementation in the Government of India. The website hosted by this Ministry is very
informative and extremely easy to navigate.
The link for the website is: https://mospi.nic.in
Try clicking on the different tabs to explore the content. This website is a reliable and authentic
source of data for GDP, Industrial production, census, surveys, Consumer Price Index etc. as it is
published by the Government of India.
Various reports maybe downloaded or press releases can be accessed. There is a key
Performance Indicator Dashboard too which can be very useful for understanding or research.
I have selected a few interesting topics which can be explored on the website. When you click on
the Statistics tab in the landing page of the MOSPI website, you get to the page which is the
screen shot given below. Here you can check out the different tabs for information.
2. When you click on the Download Tables Data the page that comes up is the screenshot below.
As can be seen there are category and subcategory choices etc. for the required information.
Once the selection is made click on Apply.
3. And when you click on Apply, hey Presto! The page below turns up, giving various options -All
India, State or Electricity etc. Select any option to get your data. There, wasn’t that simple?
4. There is a Quick Links corner for some specific information as can be seen in the screenshot
below.
5. When you click on the National Data Bank you get the following page.
And the balance of the page after scrolling:
6. And the final example of the tab I clicked on was NIIP-National Integrated Information Portal
7. And on clicking it the page below popped up giving links to various surveys
8. On clicking on Household Consumer Expenditure Survey you get data in the format given below
in the screenshot. The Data visualization of the webpage is extremely pleasing to the eye apart
from being easily understood and navigable.
This concludes my presentation of a very informative website by the Ministry of Statistics and
Programme Implementation and I hope more and more of our data scientists, economists,
academia, citizens groups, researchers, students or even common citizenry take advantage of
it, debate on it and use it for the betterment of society. With this the mission of Data for Better
Lives can be accomplished. Thank You.
