 The Cabinet today gave its approval to two separate bilateral agreements
that India will sign with Portugal and Kenya for co-operation in agriculture
and allied sectors. The proposed memorandum of understanding (MoU)
was approved in the Cabinet meeting headed by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi. The agreements will come into force on the date of their signing and
will remain valid for five years, an official statement said. The two MoUs
provide for setting up of a joint working group for developing a detailed
co-operation programme and monitoring implementation of the bilateral
pact. The MoU to be signed with Portugal covers exchange of scientific
and technical information, trade in plants and plant products, exchange of
information in phytosanitary issues, training programmes, seminars and
visits of experts and consultants. The proposed agreement with Kenya will
focus on agricultural research, animal husbandry and dairy, livestock and
fisheries horticulture, natural resource management, post-harvest
management and marketing.
 The private as well as co-operative sugar industry of the country has
demanded restructuring of the Rs 50,000 crore term loans, restoration of
ethanol prices at last year's level and excise duty waiver on ethanol. "The
industry was forced to borrow loans to pay cane price to the farmers. The
Government of India also gave loans under SEFASU and thereafter Soft
Loans. Rs.10,000 crore was borrowed by the industry under these 2
schemes only to pay cane price of farmers," stated an ISMA release
pointing that the Indian sugar industry went through financial crisis in the
last 2-3 years, mainly on account of surplus sugar production and
depressed sugar prices. The sugar prices in 2014-15 fell to its lowest in in
the last 6 years, when it touched the lowest of Rs.19 per kilo in
Maharashtra and Rs.21 per kilo in UP. The borrowing in the last few years
has seen the debt burden jump by almost 4 times to around Rs.50,000 crore
currently. "Despite improvement in sugar prices, it is still not sufficient to
enable the industry to service all its debt at the same time.
 Jeera futures traded lower on NCDEX on sufficient stocks position
following higher supply from the producing belts. Though, some losses
were capped on rising demand from the stockists and traders at the spot
market. The contract for January delivery was trading at Rs 18040,
down by 0.91% or Rs 165.00 from its previous closing of Rs 18205.
The open interest of the contract stood at 3345 lots. The contract for
March delivery was trading at Rs 16700, down by 1.33% or Rs 225.00
from its previous closing of Rs 16925.
 Coriander futures edged down on NCDEX as speculators cut down
their bets amid weak demand in the domestic spot market. Further,
rising arrivals from major growing regions also influenced coriander
futures. The contract for January delivery was trading at Rs 7200.00,
down by 0.4% or Rs 29.00 from its previous closing of Rs 7229.00.
The open interest of the contract stood at 9160 lots. The contract for
April delivery was trading at Rs 7840.00, down by 0.38% or Rs 30.00
from its previous closing of Rs 7870.00.
 Turmeric futures showed mixed trend on NCDEX as the April
contracts traded higher on rising demand at the spot market, while May
contracts traded lower due to the arrivals of inferior quality turmeric
from the producing belts, The contract for April delivery was trading at
Rs 6776, up by 0.18% or Rs 12 from its previous closing of Rs 6764.
The open interest of the contract stood at 13380 lots. The contract for
May delivery was trading at Rs 6780, down by 0.21% or Rs 14 from its
previous closing of Rs 6794.
Turmeric futures traded lower on NCDEX on arrivals of inferior
quality turmeric from the producing belts. The contract for April
delivery was trading at Rs 6766, down by 0.15% or Rs 10 from its
previous closing of Rs 6776. The open interest of the contract stood at
13345 lots on NCDEX.
