 Niti Aayog today backed use of genetically modified (GM) seeds in India
saying concerns of the technology being monopolised by MNCs can be
addressed through allowing only locally developed varieties. In its three-year
agenda document, the government think- tank also outlined various measures
like MSP reform and better marketing infrastructure to be adopted for
doubling of farmers' income. "Genetically modified (GM) seeds have emerged
as a powerful new technology promising high productivity, improved quality
and lower use of fertilisers, weedicides and pesticides in the last one to two
decades," Niti Aayog said. "There is some concern that GM seeds can be
monopolised by multinationals, which may then exploit our farmers. But this
concern is readily addressed by limiting GM seeds to those varieties
discovered by our own institutions and companies," the document said. On
the minimum support price (MSP) system, Niti Aayog said the MSP has
distorted cropping patterns, with excessive focus on the cultivation of wheat,
rice and sugarcane in the procurement states and neglect of other crops such
as pulses, oilseed and coarse grains.
 Chairman of Rubber Board Ajith Kumar on Thursday met Chief Minister
Sarbananda Sonowal and informed him that 58,000 hectares of land in 28
districts are under rubber cultivation and the Board has identified more areas
for expanding the rubber farming in the state. Sonowal said the state
government is willing to invite tyre manufacturing companies to set up base in
the state once production of rubber is increased. Rubber Board chairman
requested the Chief Minister for forwarding a proposal to Central government
for allocating extra fund under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment
Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for rubber cultivation so that sustainable
livelihood for economically weaker families can be generated. The Chief
Minister was also informed that the initial 7 to 9 years of gestation period of
rubber plantation is highly labour intensive and 46 percent of expenditure of
4.5 lakhs per hectare can be met from MGNREGS.
 Jeera futures edged up on NCDEX on rising domestic as well as exports
demand at the spot market. Further, tight stocks position following lower
supply from the producing belts fuelled the uptrend. The contract for
September delivery was trading at Rs 20140.00, up by 1.87% or Rs 370.00
from its previous closing of Rs 19770.00. The open interest of the contract
stood at 17424 lots. The contract for October delivery was trading at Rs
20280 .00, up by 1.76% or Rs 350.00 from its previous closing of Rs
19930.00. The open interest of the contract stood at 4341 lots on NCDEX. .
 Coriander futures edged higher on NCDEX as speculators built up fresh
positions, tracking a firming trend at spot market following improved
domestic as well as export demand. Further, tight stocks position on fall in
supplies from major producing regions also fuelled the uptrend. The
contract for September delivery was trading at Rs 4984.00, up by 3.92% or
Rs 188.00 from its previous closing of Rs 4796.00. The open interest of the
contract stood at 30700 lots. The contract for October delivery was
trading at Rs 5169.00, up by 3.75% or Rs 187.00 from its previous closing
of Rs 4982.00. The open interest of the contract stood at 15150 lots on
NCDEX.
 Soyabean futures traded marginally higher on NCDEX as speculators
enlarged their positions as unfavourable weather condition along with
lower acreages spurted supply worries. Further, strong demand from
domestic oil crusher too added support to soyabean prices. The contract
for October delivery was trading at Rs 3269.00, up by 0.86% or Rs 28.00
from its previous closing of Rs 3241.00. The open interest of the contract
stood at 55120 lots. The contract for November delivery was trading at Rs
3288.00, up by 0.61% or Rs 20.00 from its previous closing of Rs 3268.00.
The open interest of the contract stood at 25070 lots on NCDEX.
