History with a FlavorfulTwist
Shawano, WI- May11,2016: Shawano County HistoricalSociety willbe kicking off Rhubarb Fest at Heritage Park
and the adjoining Sunset Island, June 11, 2016 from 10am-3pm.
In its eighth year,Rhubarb Fest provides a family friendly event has activities to please allage groups. Toursof the
Heritage Park historicalbuildings and demonstrations of old-time activities,like hide tanning, bee keeping, quilting &
carding provide not only a learning experience but fun for allages. Antique carsand tractors give the festivaladded fun
for enthusiasts interested in old-time enginesand equipment. Homemade Amish ice-cream,Rhubarb pies& bratsmade to
satisfy your taste buds.
New this year the Shawano County HistoricalSociety willbe hosting a Civil War Reenactmentthatis performed by
Company E 2nd
Wisconsin volunteer infantry (http://coe2ndwis.com/). We are very pleased to be able to provide this
wonderfulopportunity to the public. For the first time this year the Rhubarb Fest will also hold a rhubarb pie baking

a private not-for-profit
organization that was
founded and incorporated in
1941. It is dedicated to the
preservation of Shawano
County history, and to
providing education about
Shawano County’s history

The Shawano County Historical Society is operated byvolunteers and funded by membership dues,
donations, bequests, and grants. It operates in partnership with Shawano County; most of the Society’s museums and
displays are situated in Shawano County’s Heritage Park, onthe South side of the Shawano Lake-Wolf River channel
at the Northend of Franklin Street in the City of Shawano. A museum is also located in Gresham. The Society
continually benefits from synergistic relationships with the Wolf River Builder’s Association, the Shawano Women’s
Club, the Master Gardeners, the Shawano County Chamber of Commerce, and other civic-minded organizations and
persons.
The Society owns and operates the Sikora Archives and Reception Center, where archiving and administrative
work is performed, conveniently located just across the Street from the Heritage Park grounds. The Society also
manages a variety of museums and attractions at Heritage Park.

NEW ATTRACTIONS TO THEIR ANNUAL RHUBARB
FEST

The Shawano County Historical Society will celebrate the 8th annual Rhubarb Fest on Saturday, June 11th,
2016 with some new additions to the festival.
A rhubarb pie baking contest is planned with prizes to be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winners. Slices
of the contest pies will then be offered for sale in the dessert line on the porchof the Sikora Archives and Reception
Center. A complete list of rules is available at the Historical Society’s Archive building at 517 NorthFranklin or
online at www.shawanohistory.org.
The history of the Civil War will be noted with a reenactment by Company E, 2nd Division, Wisconsin,
members. This event will be located on Sunset Island, along with the fur traders’ encampment and the children’s
activities. Civil War memorabilia of Shawano County will be on display on the porchof the Kast House. There
visitors will have the opportunity to read actual Civil War letters written home by soldier Parmalee Ackermann to his
family in Shawano.
Antique quilts from the Historical Society collection will be on display under a tent located near the log cabin.
Here visitors will hear the history and design of each quilt in the collection. One unique quilt features the autographs
of many early Shawano residents.
Heritage Park’s newest building addition, Old Tabor Church, will
be open to visitors as part of the museums tour. The church is now
complete, including furnishings, and can be rented for small weddings and
other celebrations.
Plan on attending Rhubarb Fest to enjoy these new attractions as
well as all of your old favorites including rhubarb desserts and brats,
museum tours, The Woman’s Club plant sale, live music, the basket
raffle, crafters and much more.

Rhubarb Festival 2016
Pie Contest
Pies must be entered in the name of the person who made it. Limit of one pie per person.
Contest is for amateur bakers only!!
Each Pie must be made from scratch.
Pie filling must be Rhubarb only. No other fruit or nut combinations allowed.
Crust is cooks choice. (Pastry, Crumb, etc.)
Bring your pie to the tent setup to the southofthe Shawano CountyHistoricalSocietyHouse
(524 N. Franklin St) BY 11:00 am Saturday, June 11, 2016.
Pie should be baked in an 8” or 9” disposable pan.
A copy with the pie recipe with ingredients listed must be provided. Include recipe name,
contestant name, and phone number at the time of drop off.
All recipes become the property of the Shawano County Historical Society.
Judging will start at 11:15 AM.
Pies will be judged on Presentation, Crust (color, texture, doneness, & flavor), Filling
(consistency, texture & Flavor) and Overall Impression.
Decision of the Judges is final. Judges will not know contestants names.
After judging pies will be sliced and sold by the piece.
1st, 2nd and 3rd awards will be given.
