My background and major experience is databases, particularly db2.
For 15 years, I have been working as db2 dba in database design/setup and as
administrator/system engineer, mainly on mainframe, both for the operational as the data
warehouse side, both applicative as technical. I started in DB2 end user support for QMF and got
from start involved in the modeling, development and setup of the first structured and coherent,
history including ‘data warehouse’ for the insurance company. SQL was my primary language.
I’ve always been particularly intrigued by the features and possibilities of tools and finding out
which ones could be primarily of help to solve customer’s questions and how to use them to this
goal. I experienced that thorough analysis, thinking a long-term solution in terms of usability and
maintainability, pragmatic implementation and continuous documenting and communication are
key aspects of working efficiently and successfully. I set up db2 connectivity on number of
platforms (windows/unix/linuxsolaris/as400) and participated in the first setups of db2 at
DTS/IS4F on unix+linux (for ILMT, for ODS belins, ISM). I advised in CDC (Changed Data
Capture) being a good solution for the needs of the customer.

From architectural point, I helped fitting in the Oracle Exadata solution into the company, pointing
out some pitfalls.
BI tools – sas – cognos - datastage
Moving to BI, I learned basics of SAS implementations on distributed systems (windows/unix)
and installed a new SAS version on mainframe. Now working on investigating and installing all
SAS client softwares in Windows 8.1/Windows Server 2012R2 environment, ie SAS MS Office
Add In, SAS Eguide, SAS Foundation, SAS BI Solutions.
Technically, also Cognos and Datastage pull my attention. My added value initially was in
translating the IBM architected solution into an IS4F implementation, taking care of all concerns
(unix/was/db2/bi/network/security/time…; https, ldap access, smtp, licenses …), still building a
working solution that lasts. All this needs to be setup in an everyday moving environment
(changing landscape for network/security/identity&access management… all split because of
customer segregation). Today, we’re building upon this base, rendering new
datasources/dbms’s, managing access roles and groups for growing number of projects and
customers, automating stop/start of the processes, get scheduling for datastage implemented …
coordination
Coordination of the BI team was put in my bucket with the main goal to watch on priorities and
incidents, avoid customer complaints, make sure people in Poland and Luxemburg get involved,
knowledge is shared and be a contact point to the team leader.
Moving from an integrated to an independent infrastructure service provider, along my way came
TPM (Target Price Modeling): define resource units and managed services for BI
RACI: setup role and responsibility matrix for new Cognos tool
Lean six sigma: identify enhancements and efficiency optimizations
Architecture Building Blocks: define ABB for BI tools
Coordination is mainly needed for Polish and Belgian teams working on the same projects and 6
BI tools that are to be managed: Business Objects (BO)-Crystal Reports, BO Data Services,
Qlikview, SAS, Cognos, Datastage.
