Responsibilities: Oversee the worldwide Environmental, Health and
Safety function for this rapidly evolving branded and generic
pharmaceutical company, ranked #1 by Forbes in its list of top 17 global
large cap ($50+ billion) pharma companies. EHS metrics are among the
best in the industry.
Key Accomplishments: Since joining early in 2014, the enterprise
injury rate decreased significantly (36% improvement in 2015 vs 2014
after a 48% improvement in 2014 vs 2013). These results were driven by
over 3000 management-led site inspections (Gemba Walks) per year
with over 90% of all Operations employees worldwide submitting near
miss reports, observed hazardous workplace conditions, unsafe acts or
suggestions for improvement annually. In addition, substantial
investment (totaling $25M) was approved to eliminate exposure to potent
pharmaceuticals during manufacturing and R&D. Similar success on the
environmental side as the company is now recognized as a leader in
sustainability and climate change as evidenced by the 2015 Newsweek
Green Ratings (#2 greenest of all companies in US, #3 globally), DJSI
listing and CDP Annual Reports.
2004 – Present New York Medical College, Adjunct Professor (Sr. Lecturer)
Key Accomplishment: Periodically teach the Occupational Health,
Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene, and Environmental Influences on Human
Health courses at the School of Public Health. Also participated on
search committee for the new dean of the school.
2014 – Present Tulane University, Adjunct Professor
Key Accomplishment: Teach Financial Aspects of EHS and the
International EHS Management System courses.
2006 – 2014 Sikorsky Aircraft Corp, Vice President and Chief Safety Officer
Responsibilities: Led the EHS, Aviation and Product Safety, Medical,
Fire Rescue, Government and Uniformed Security functions for a leading
aircraft manufacturer with accountability for the safety of Marine One, the
Blackhawk fleet in wartime and large commercial helicopters flying
CEO’s and offshore oil workers.
Key Accomplishments: Guided Sikorsky Aircraft’s customers’ flight
operations safely through various product safety concerns, utilizing
advanced quantitative risk assessment tools, to keep the fleet flying with
excellent margin of safety. Concerning workplace Safety, worked closely
with organized labor and company leadership to significantly reduce risk
as evidenced by elimination of serious injuries, reduced recordable injury
rates (over 3X) with concomitant reduction in workers’ comp costs of
over $3M annually with consistently rising employee engagement scores.
While production increased over 2.5X from 2006, actually reduced total
absolute energy use worldwide (saving over $10 M annually) as well as
greenhouse gas and toxic air emissions, total solid waste and chemicals
discharged to water over same period. Maintained flat budget ($35M)
and headcount (160) throughout.
2003 - 2006 Purdue Pharma LP, Executive Director of EHS
Key Accomplishment: Garnered support and built new Corporate EHS
Department, Program and Management System based on industry best
practices, maximum value added and leading indicators. Incident rates,
leading indicators, cost-benefit analysis and employee perception survey
all among industry best.
2000 - 2003 Aventis (Sanofi), Global Dir. IH, Env Health & Product Stewardship
Key Accomplishment: Merged divergent programs from two large
companies and at least three distinct cultures (German, French and
American) into one integrated program serving over 90 sites worldwide
with Industrial Hygiene, Occupational and Environmental Toxicology
support.
1992 - 2000 Rhone-Poulenc Rorer (Sanofi), Director, HSE, Worldwide R&D and
Corporate Director of Occ Health & IH
Key Accomplishment: Managed Site EHS Program at 2000 person
R&D/Corporate HQ facility, served as head of EHS for the four R&D sites
worldwide and as the global head of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational
Health for the corporation (at the same time).
1990 - 1992 Merck and Co. Inc., Global Occupational and Env Toxicologist
Key Accomplishment: First professional to work jointly for the
Environmental and the Health and Safety departments. Built first
electronic system there for authoring and managing MSDSs and first
corporate program for Environmental Risk Assessment at Merck.
1988 - 1990 Merck and Co., Inc., Industrial Hygienist, West Point Site
Key Accomplishment: Pioneered one of the first Performance-Based
Exposure Control Limit (Control Banding) programs at a major
pharmaceutical facility.
1981 - 1988 Merck and Co., Inc., Staff Toxicology Biologist - R&D West Point
Key Accomplishment: Managed multiple pre-clinical chronic toxicity
bioassays leading to successful new drug applications with the FDA.

Sound) and on advisory boards at Halcyon Heli Limo and ORC’s Executive Business Issues
Forum. Appointed by the US Secretary of Labor and serve on the Federal Whistleblower
Protection Advisory Committee (heading the 11c Subcommittee). Current member of American
Industrial Hygiene Association, American Board of Industrial Hygiene and the International
Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers where I serve as Steering Committee member for the
Containment CoP. Past member of Helicopter Association International and International
Helicopter Safety Team, Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Society of
Chemical Hazard Communication and Mid-Atlantic Society of Toxicology. Led the Return-on-
HSE-Investment (ROHSEI) Taskforce at ORC and present frequently at national and international
safety conferences on the topics of Transformational Cultures and the Business Value of Safety.
