Your CV is the most important tool you have to promote yourself to
potential employers and recruiters
7. How should a CV be formatted?
• Save your CV as a Word document
• The expected length for a CV is 2-3 pages, technical CV’s will
need to be longer, up to a maximum of 4
• Write it in reverse chronological order
• Use a professional font, Arial size 11 is popular
• Use bullet points to highlight skills and experience
8. What information to include:
• Contact details; including mobile, home number, email and
address
• Personal statement
• Education details including dates and qualifications
• Employment history
• Interests
• References, it’s not always possible to include these if you are
still employed. A one liner ‘References available on request’
will suffice
9. What is a personal statement?
It’s a brief summary that sells you and your skills to the employer
10. How to write a Personal Statement:
• Your personal statement needs to be tailored to each job you
are applying for
• Remember to include information on who you are, what you
can offer and your career aspirations
• Aim for 150 words or 4 to 5 lines
11. How to show your Education/Skills
• Use a skills matrix to highlight your main skills including the
number of years you have put these skills into practice
• Make sure you highlight your specific skills relevant to the role
• If you feel that your experience is holding you back, lead with
your education
12. What employment history to include:
• List your exact duties within each position, the Job Title alone
is not enough
• Highlight areas of responsibility and outline your key
achievements
• Any substantial gaps in your employment history should be
explained in your cover letter, if approached in the right way
they needn’t be a hindrance
13. Don’t ruin your chances with a spelling mistake!
• Always use spell check, but don’t rely on it!
• Avoid grammatical errors e.g the wrong use of your/you’re,
their/there/they’re, affect/effect are all common mistakes
• Get someone to proof read your CV
15. Do:
• Provide contact details
• Keep it concise
• Tailor to each role applied for particularly the personal
statement
• Include relevant skills and achievements
• Check for mistakes and get it proof read
16. Don’t:
• Make it too long, a CV is a checklist of achievements
• Include details and information that is irrelevant to your
application
• Use strange fonts that are hard to read
• Use coloured text
• Include a selfie
