until it became the largest UK Metal Recycling Company. Coopers had, on two occasions, won the Queens
Award for Export Achievement.
• Chair of the “Disposal and Infrastructure Committee” of the Automotive Consortium On Recycling and
Disposal where I guided Government legislation covering recycling of 2 million “end of life” vehicles produced
each year.
• My largest auction was circa £2 Billion - My smallest was £20K
• To save money you do not have to use an auction.
• I purchased 500 estate cars from a leading motor manufacturer who
had professed to have already given my client their lowest prices.
• I competed the need between their sales and finance departments
using e-mail and telephone.
• The Manufacturer knew that we would only buy from them and the
competition was between their sales department and their funders.
• I saved circa £350,000
How big does a competition need to be?
An example of purchasing innovation!
Prior to Coopers merged we needed over 50 new cranes per year . So I decided to tender for 50+ long
reach machines with grabs and wired for magnets and agreed to:
• Buy at least 50 machines per year for five years
• Receive year on year buy back prices with 85% paid after year one
• Pay for the machines against a non-availed promissory note ( No bank facility was required)
• Be paid for the buybacks as we paid off the promissory notes!
• Have the machines maintained by the supplier within the cost
The result was that:
• We always ran new machines (max twelve months old)
• We had no cost of maintenance
• Each machine cost 15% of the discounted new price!

Instrumental in the growth of this family business until it became the largest UK Metal Recycling Company. Coopers had, on two occasions, won the Queens Award for Export Achievement. • Chair of the “Disposal and Infrastructure Committee” of the Automotive Consortium On Recycling and Disposal where I guided Government legislation covering recycling of 2 million “end of life” vehicles produced each year.
  • 5. • My largest auction was circa £2 Billion - My smallest was £20K • To save money you do not have to use an auction. • I purchased 500 estate cars from a leading motor manufacturer who had professed to have already given my client their lowest prices. • I competed the need between their sales and finance departments using e-mail and telephone. • The Manufacturer knew that we would only buy from them and the competition was between their sales department and their funders. • I saved circa £350,000 How big does a competition need to be?
  • 6. An example of purchasing innovation! Prior to Coopers merged we needed over 50 new cranes per year . So I decided to tender for 50+ long reach machines with grabs and wired for magnets and agreed to: • Buy at least 50 machines per year for five years • Receive year on year buy back prices with 85% paid after year one • Pay for the machines against a non-availed promissory note ( No bank facility was required) • Be paid for the buybacks as we paid off the promissory notes! • Have the machines maintained by the supplier within the cost The result was that: • We always ran new machines (max twelve months old) • We had no cost of maintenance • Each machine cost 15% of the discounted new price!
