2. We all have our own current - each one carrying our history, identity,
and personal narratives. As life progresses, it is inevitable that
we intersect into other currents and form bodies of water, which
represent the communities we find ourselves in today. Within these
communities, we rediscover ourselves, our culture, and the stories we
share.
There are times when our currents become rapids, taking us through
toil and strife that lead us in different directions. At other times,
we find ourselves in stillwater, reflecting upon these experiences.
Nonetheless, wherever our currents may go, we continue to flow
forward with what we have gained to reconnect with our body of
water-- always changing, but always present.
Today, we would like to invite you to witness our currents intersect as
we remember Typhoon Haiyan, the natural disaster that struck the
Philippines on November 8, 2013. Though it has been over a year, we
would like to keep this narrative current in our minds and ask you all
to remember, not the devastation, but the solidarity and resilience of
our community.

3. Dear Students, Friends, Family, Alumni, and Community,
I would like to personally welcome you to the Pilipino American Alliance’s 39th annual
Pilipino Cultural Night! In today’s context, it’s a bit of a misnomer - I’m sure you can agree
Pilipino Cultural Afternoon would sound ridiculous! However, our event’s 39-year-old
purpose as one of the largest avenues for performance and creative expression within
the Pilipin@ community has persisted. Intermeshing both culture and identity through
performing arts, this year’s show hopes to maintain the long-standing legacy of PCN
current.
Speaking of current, our show is deeply rooted in the history we strive to keep alive today.
The Pilipino American Alliance, formerly the Filipino Students Association, was founded
in 1969, in the wake of the third world Liberation Front - a movement that started in San
Francisco State University and eventually came to UC Berkeley in an effort to establish
a third world college. In 1976, PAA held its first PCN in YWCA. Since its beginnings as
a dinner with traditional/folk dance performances, PCN has evolved into a full-scale
integrated production that combines the traditional, contemporary, and timeless
messages of our culture into a production fit for the world-class stage, Zellerbach Hall.
This year’s show, Current(s), addresses themes of poverty and abuse through our
personal stories and struggles as Pilipin@s and Pilipin@-Americans, heavy influenced by
the recent and relevant events of Typhoon Haiyan.
PCN is more than just a show; it is a process rooted in PAA’s dedication to bringing the
community together and providing opportunities for community members to engage in
our culture, our history, and our shared identities. Thank you all for coming out to see the
culmination of this process. Please, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
Isang Bagsak,
Justin Bauzon

6. What is PCN?
PCN is an annual theatrical-production hosted by UC
Berkeley’s Pilipino American Alliance. Every year, PCN aims
to offer a space where individual stories, shared hxstories
and talents are honored and explored. In its 39th year of
production, we are the longest running cultural show on
UC Berkeley’s campus. We are humbled by every PCN that
came before us, and we are grateful for their contributions
that have brought us to where we are today. Far beyond
the show itself, PCN is a community. Through an extremely
collaborative and year-long effort, PCN engages in issues
that have impacted, and often times, still continue to
shape Pilipin@ and Pilipin@-American experiences. Such
engagement and preparation is made by and for the
Pilipin@ Community here at Cal.
PCN HXSTORY
PCN Started in 1976 at the UYWCA on Bancroft and
Bowditch. The original show was a community dinner with
traditional/folk dances that included a cast of about
10-15 members. In the 1980s, the show evolved into a
full-scale performance in Zellerbach Hall. Since then, we
have continued to foster the annual production that is
Pilipino Cultural Night
COMMUNITY CELEBRATION
Community Celebration is an opportunity for the cast,
audience, family, friends, and everyone that is part of
a larger community to gather and commemorate the
hxstory and the struggles that have been imperative in
the formation of our distinct Pilipin@ culture and identity.
Community dinner is completely free and open to all
audience members!
COMMUNITY CELEBRATION WILL BE TODAY
APRIL 12 FROM 6:30 - 7:30 PM, LOCATION TBA.
ALL ARE WELCOME!
7. Beyond the Stage
THE PROCESS
Beginning in June throughout the summer, after an intensive
application and interview process, we solidified our writing
team and director. From September to March, our writers
have worked tirelessly to create a script which brings
narratives surrounding the issues of poverty and abuse,
the relationships created and destroyed as a result, the
situations experienced in struggle and serenity. Their work
comes to fruition in a story that comes from the heart and
in characters that have been inspired by real loved ones.
It has been the ultimate goal to highlight that, although
this is Pilipino Cultural Night, these experiences can be and
are shared by others who do now necessarily identify as
Pilipin@.
CREATIVE TEAM SELECTION
Similar to the process of selecting our Creative Team,
extensive application and interview process occurred in
bringing together our Creative Team. From September
to January, we had been fortunate in composing a
team of amazingly talented and dedicated individuals.
Through the directors’ meticulous planning and innovative
collaborations, the performative and logistical aspects of
PCN came together.
ALL-CAST REHEARSALS
Beginning on February 8, and continued every Saturday and
Sunday from 11am-4pm, All-Casts is the space and time
period where Creative Team directors and cast members
worked with one another. Through stage blocking and
integration of performance, the script comes to life. All-
Casts were facilitated by the Stage Team.

Throughout the PCN process
Stage team constantly asks
“Is how we are presenting our
story conveying the impact
we want?” Stage is integral
to the process as it handles
the technical, logistical,
detail-oriented work. We also
facilitate five hour All-Cast

Sunday starting in February.

Stage provides the platform
to bring Creative Team’s
visions to life.

To write is to merely put down one’s
thoughts – but to write in the name
of telling the untold stories of our
people is to uplift our ancestors,
our communities, and our future
generations to come. The Writing
Team’s endeavor to bring you a fresh
yet authentic perspective on the issues
of poverty and abuse in relation to
the Pilipin@ diaspora commenced in
August and was a tumultuous process
to say the least. Our objective was
to dig deep(er) and our constant
reminder was/is the inter-generational
experience of the Pilipin@-American.
We acknowledge the fictional content
of this play just as much as we
recognize the stark reality and living,
breathing, beautiful human beings this
story draws inspiration from. May you
find a relationship to one of the many
currents that run throughout this play;
may it resonate as deep as the waters
that separate us – the waters that, too,
are our billowing connection.
14. PAA PCN’s 2015 Acting Cast is a tough one to rival. These twelve gifted
actresses and actors dedicated themselves to breathing life into a
challenging script: one that explores topics of physical abuse; verbal
abuse; poverty; and the dark side of relief efforts after Typhoon Haiyan.
They’ve channeled all their creative energy, and then some, to live their
characters as a second skin. Only teamwork and talent like this can bring
out the heart of PCN. We guarantee you a spectacular show.

PANDANGGO SA ILAW
Pandanggo Sa Ilaw is a dance from Lubang Island, Mindoro and it
translates roughly to dance imitating the light of the fireflies. After a
good catch, the fishermxn would celebrate by drinking wine, dancing,
and swinging lighted lamps and the dance came about through those
celebrations.
TINIKLING
Tinikling is a dance that originates from Leyte in the Visayan Islands. It
mimics the tikling bird dodging the bamboo traps that the rice farmers
set.
VINTA
Vinta is a dance from Mindanao and it commemorates the migration
of the Filipinos into the archipelago. The dancers on the bamboo sticks
mimick the movement of the Vinta vessel.
The traditional dance component of PCN really brings together the
different regions of the Philippines. Every move we make has a story
behind it and we want to tell that story on this world-renowned stage.
