Producers Welcome
Friends, family and community members:
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Pilipino Cultural Night at UC Berkeley—a
milestone, indeed, in the history of culture shows and the Pilipino community at
large. For 40 years, PCN has served as a safe space for community members to
find themselves through solidarity, activism, and the arts. Our production provides
our cast of more than 60 performers with a means to explore their identity, find
friendships, and gain a sense of belonging in the process. Above all, these last four
decades have been made possible, in great part, by you—alumni, family, and fellow
community members who propel our passion for storytelling and representation of
the Pilipinx experience. For this, we give you our greatest gratitude, and we are hon-
ored to share our stories with you this afternoon. Importantly, the story of this year’s
PCN is your story as well. Through the theme of Balikbayan, a word which translates
roughly into “one who returns home”, we explore ways through which we can return
to our respective homelands—not necessarily physically, but temporally and through
vivid memories. We also recognize that our experiences are shaped by struggles that
make revisiting difficult, causing us to choose what—or who—we remember. Today,
we bring our multifaceted experiences of both joy and hardship as Pilipinxs and Pili-
pinx-Americans to the stage. Throughout the PCN process, our dedicated cast and
Creative Team have learned that there is more than one way to go back home—and
we hope that today’s show will bring you back as well.

PAA Welcome
Dear Students, Friends, Family, Alumni, and Community,
We would like to personally welcome you to the Pilipino American Alliance’s 40th
annual Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN)! This year, we will be celebrating the 40 years
of PCN’s legacy in showcasing Pilipinx and Pilipinx-American history, heritage and
identity. For 40 years now, PCN has created a space for folx interested in learning
about the Pilipinx culture and identity to come together and learn about it through
performance and storytelling. Our show is deeply rooted in the history we strive
to keep alive today. The Pilipino American Alliance, formerly the Filipino Students
Association, was founded in 1969, in the wake of the Third world Liberation Front - a
movement that started in San Francisco State University and eventually came to
UC Berkeley in an effort to establish a third world college. In 1976, PAA held its first
PCN in YWCA. Since its beginnings as a dinner with traditional/folk dance perfor-
mances, PCN has evolved into a full-scale integrated production that combines the
traditional, contemporary, and timeless messages of our culture into a production
fit for the world-class stage, Zellerbach Hall. This year’s show, Balikbayan, addresses
the theme of trans-generational identity as Pilipinxs and Pilipinx-Americans, and is
heavily influenced by the Martial Law Era. PCN is more than just a show; it is a pro-
cess rooted in PAA’s dedication to bringing the community together and providing
opportunities for community members to engage in our culture, our history, and
our shared identities. The similarities and differences within our own personal narra-
tives are what makes the Pilipinx and Pilipinx-American identity even more beauti-
ful. Our history and narratives matter, and PCN allows folxs to share them with each
other. And with that, thank you all for coming out to see the culmination of this
process. Please, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Synopsis
Set in the modern day Bay Area, Pilipino Cultural Night’s
“Balikbayan” begins when the Santos family receives
a *balikbayan box full of souvenirs and mementos
sent by their relatives in the Philippines. Anthony, his
parents Leonardo and Rose, and his aunts Maritess and
Marisol unpack the box, unexpectedly unpacking their
family’s history, secrets and tumultuous past. Anthony
embarks on a journey of trying to understand himself,
but first he must understand his family’s history and
how these experiences over time come together to
shape his transgenerational identity. Right on time for
Pilipino Cultural Night’s 40th Anniversary, Anthony’s
parents tell him stories about 40 years ago, living in the
Philippines under Martial Law. Their stories bring light
to discussions on activism, gender identity, and the
socioeconomic effects of Filipino-American diaspora.
*In the Tagalog language, “balikbayan” is used to
describe those who return to a meaningful place after
having been gone for an extended period of time.
One cultural tradition incorporates the balikbayan box
– the packing, sending, and receiving of a box filled
with items from another place, and often another
culture.
PCN is an annual theatrical production hosted by UC Berke-
ley’s Pilipino American Alliance. Every year, PCN aims to offer a
space where individual stories, shared hxstories and talents are
honored and explored. In its 40th year of production, we are
the longest running cultural show on UC Berkeley’s campus. We
are humbled by every PCN that came before us, and we are
grateful for their contributions that have brought us to where
we are today. Far beyond the show itself, PCN is a community.
Through an extremely collaborative and year-long effort, PCN
engages in issues that have impacted, and often times, still
continue to shape Pilipin@ and Pilipin@-American experiences.
Such engagement and preparation is made by and for the
Pilipin@ Community here at Cal.
PCN HXSTORY
PCN Started in 1976 at the YWCA on Bancroft and Bowditch.
The original show was a community dinner with traditional/folk
dances that included a cast of about 10-15 members. In the
1980s, the show evolved into a full-scale performance in Zeller-
bach Hall. Since then, we have continued to foster the annual
production that is Pilipino Cultural Night.

Be prepared to laugh, cry, and sit
on the edge of your seats. The
eight members of this year’s
PCN 2016 Acting Cast are a small,
but deadly force to be reckoned
with. They have worked tireless-
ly to bring this amazing script to
life and tell the difficult story of
a family living in the Philippines
during Martial Law. Through the
casts’ combined talent and ef-
fort, we promise to produce a
spectacular 40th PCN and to
deliver a performance that res-
onates with each of you.

From jazz to pop to rock ‘n’ roll, the legendary band of PCN is ready to
rock your world. All eleven musicians have come together tonight to en-
tertain you all, with instruments among percussion, strings, guitars, and

Finance
As members of the Logistics Component, we’re in charge of managing
budget allocation and financial needs for the production, working with
PAA Finance Chair and Creative Team members to set an effective
system in their monetary ventures. Specifically, we work with Marketing
Component in fundraisers --to promote the show around the greater
community-- and with Producers for different sources of funding in the
forms of ASUC grants, alumni relations, and sponsorship.

tion as much as we’ve enjoyed this process.

Promotions has loved working to keep the excitement of PCN alive in our
cast-members and audience. Through constantly updating social medi-
as, vlogs and interviews, outreaching to high schools and businesses, and
doing WERK with our fellow Creative Team members, our primary goal
was to share this amazing story with you. Whether you’re a Cal Bear,
local high school student, family member, or anything in between, we’re
so glad you made it! #MarketingSquad

The writers began their process back in June by learning about each
other and bonding over skype calls, rooftop pizza, and crying together
over family stories that spoke to the heart of the collective story we
wanted to write. After careful reflection we decided that for the 40th
PCN the script this year should look back on the history of our com-
munity over the past forty years and how the Pil-identity has changed
but also remained strong and resilient in spirit. So we began our semes-
ter-long journey of developing our narrative, writing our script, and cre-
ating characters that represent inspirational figures from our own lives.
When we typed the final words of the script back in January we were
proud of the vision we had created of a family that is strong, loving,
and full of fighters. We hope you love watching this story as much as we
loved writing it.

Special Thanks
The writers would like to extend a special thanks to Michelle Abiera,
whom this story would not have been possible without. From the
very beginning of the writing process, Michelle created a space for
us to open our minds and our hearts, allowing the writing team to
connect on a deep and personal level. She invited us to think crit-
ically and creatively about our culture and our history, facilitating
our thought process as we developed the theme, plot, and char-
acters of what has become the script for the 40th annual Pilipino
Cultural Night. Her passion, intentionality, and strength inspired us
to put as much heart into this script as she puts into all that she
does. We love you, Michelle!
Technical team acts as the glue that ties all the creative components
together. We handle the technical, logistical, and detailed-oriented
work that includes organizing All-Cast & tech rehearsals, designing the
lighting, coordinating microphones, and positioning the props. Basically,
we’re the chicks with the headsets bossing everyone around backstage

strong as all of you are.

  • 2. Producers Welcome Friends, family and community members: This year marks the 40th anniversary of Pilipino Cultural Night at UC Berkeley—a milestone, indeed, in the history of culture shows and the Pilipino community at large. For 40 years, PCN has served as a safe space for community members to find themselves through solidarity, activism, and the arts. Our production provides our cast of more than 60 performers with a means to explore their identity, find friendships, and gain a sense of belonging in the process. Above all, these last four decades have been made possible, in great part, by you—alumni, family, and fellow community members who propel our passion for storytelling and representation of the Pilipinx experience. For this, we give you our greatest gratitude, and we are hon- ored to share our stories with you this afternoon. Importantly, the story of this year’s PCN is your story as well. Through the theme of Balikbayan, a word which translates roughly into “one who returns home”, we explore ways through which we can return to our respective homelands—not necessarily physically, but temporally and through vivid memories. We also recognize that our experiences are shaped by struggles that make revisiting difficult, causing us to choose what—or who—we remember. Today, we bring our multifaceted experiences of both joy and hardship as Pilipinxs and Pili- pinx-Americans to the stage. Throughout the PCN process, our dedicated cast and Creative Team have learned that there is more than one way to go back home—and we hope that today’s show will bring you back as well. • 3. PAA Welcome Dear Students, Friends, Family, Alumni, and Community, We would like to personally welcome you to the Pilipino American Alliance’s 40th annual Pilipino Cultural Night (PCN)! This year, we will be celebrating the 40 years of PCN’s legacy in showcasing Pilipinx and Pilipinx-American history, heritage and identity. For 40 years now, PCN has created a space for folx interested in learning about the Pilipinx culture and identity to come together and learn about it through performance and storytelling. Our show is deeply rooted in the history we strive to keep alive today. The Pilipino American Alliance, formerly the Filipino Students Association, was founded in 1969, in the wake of the Third world Liberation Front - a movement that started in San Francisco State University and eventually came to UC Berkeley in an effort to establish a third world college. In 1976, PAA held its first PCN in YWCA. Since its beginnings as a dinner with traditional/folk dance perfor- mances, PCN has evolved into a full-scale integrated production that combines the traditional, contemporary, and timeless messages of our culture into a production fit for the world-class stage, Zellerbach Hall. This year’s show, Balikbayan, addresses the theme of trans-generational identity as Pilipinxs and Pilipinx-Americans, and is heavily influenced by the Martial Law Era. PCN is more than just a show; it is a pro- cess rooted in PAA’s dedication to bringing the community together and providing opportunities for community members to engage in our culture, our history, and our shared identities. The similarities and differences within our own personal narra- tives are what makes the Pilipinx and Pilipinx-American identity even more beauti- ful. Our history and narratives matter, and PCN allows folxs to share them with each other. And with that, thank you all for coming out to see the culmination of this process. Please, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! • 5. Synopsis Set in the modern day Bay Area, Pilipino Cultural Night’s “Balikbayan” begins when the Santos family receives a *balikbayan box full of souvenirs and mementos sent by their relatives in the Philippines. Anthony, his parents Leonardo and Rose, and his aunts Maritess and Marisol unpack the box, unexpectedly unpacking their family’s history, secrets and tumultuous past. Anthony embarks on a journey of trying to understand himself, but first he must understand his family’s history and how these experiences over time come together to shape his transgenerational identity. Right on time for Pilipino Cultural Night’s 40th Anniversary, Anthony’s parents tell him stories about 40 years ago, living in the Philippines under Martial Law. Their stories bring light to discussions on activism, gender identity, and the socioeconomic effects of Filipino-American diaspora. *In the Tagalog language, “balikbayan” is used to describe those who return to a meaningful place after having been gone for an extended period of time. One cultural tradition incorporates the balikbayan box – the packing, sending, and receiving of a box filled with items from another place, and often another culture.
  • 6. PCN is an annual theatrical production hosted by UC Berke- ley’s Pilipino American Alliance. Every year, PCN aims to offer a space where individual stories, shared hxstories and talents are honored and explored. In its 40th year of production, we are the longest running cultural show on UC Berkeley’s campus. We are humbled by every PCN that came before us, and we are grateful for their contributions that have brought us to where we are today. Far beyond the show itself, PCN is a community. Through an extremely collaborative and year-long effort, PCN engages in issues that have impacted, and often times, still continue to shape Pilipin@ and Pilipin@-American experiences. Such engagement and preparation is made by and for the Pilipin@ Community here at Cal. PCN HXSTORY PCN Started in 1976 at the YWCA on Bancroft and Bowditch. The original show was a community dinner with traditional/folk dances that included a cast of about 10-15 members. In the 1980s, the show evolved into a full-scale performance in Zeller- bach Hall. Since then, we have continued to foster the annual production that is Pilipino Cultural Night. What is PCN?

The eight members of this year’s PCN 2016 Acting Cast are a small, but deadly force to be reckoned with. They have worked tireless- ly to bring this amazing script to life and tell the difficult story of a family living in the Philippines during Martial Law. Through the casts’ combined talent and ef- fort, we promise to produce a spectacular 40th PCN and to deliver a performance that res- onates with each of you. Acting ANGELICA NICOLAS

  • 13. The writers began their process back in June by learning about each other and bonding over skype calls, rooftop pizza, and crying together over family stories that spoke to the heart of the collective story we wanted to write. After careful reflection we decided that for the 40th PCN the script this year should look back on the history of our com- munity over the past forty years and how the Pil-identity has changed but also remained strong and resilient in spirit. So we began our semes- ter-long journey of developing our narrative, writing our script, and cre- ating characters that represent inspirational figures from our own lives. When we typed the final words of the script back in January we were proud of the vision we had created of a family that is strong, loving, and full of fighters. We hope you love watching this story as much as we loved writing it. Writers MOLLY KROST & RAYANNE PIAÑA Special Thanks The writers would like to extend a special thanks to Michelle Abiera, whom this story would not have been possible without. From the very beginning of the writing process, Michelle created a space for us to open our minds and our hearts, allowing the writing team to connect on a deep and personal level. She invited us to think crit- ically and creatively about our culture and our history, facilitating our thought process as we developed the theme, plot, and char- acters of what has become the script for the 40th annual Pilipino Cultural Night. Her passion, intentionality, and strength inspired us to put as much heart into this script as she puts into all that she does. We love you, Michelle!
