South-east Asian countries are planning to build many new coal-fired power plants that would clash with UN climate goals of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The new fossil fuel plants do not meet requirements for keeping temperature increases low. A lack of clean energy growth and continued funding of coal projects by banks are standing in the way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the region in line with UN targets.
