BBM was first created in 2005 by Gary Klassen for Blackberry users, allowing them to communicate via PIN links. It represented those who had access to new technology at the time and was seen as a status symbol, with Blackberry users divided into high and lower classes. Over time, BBM integrated with other social media like Twitter and its popularity grew as a way for users to socialize and express their pride in owning an expensive Blackberry. It faced no regulation as it did not violate any rules.
