People in Middle Eastern countries are concerned that globalization is threatening their culture, language, and traditions. Younger people are especially vulnerable as they increasingly adopt American pop culture through media and consumer products that symbolize concepts like freedom and modernity. Several Middle Eastern governments and media companies have also been introducing Western media to the region. However, some efforts are being made to adapt global influences to local culture, such as through Arabic-dubbed cartoons and movies, and new fashion trends fusing Western and Islamic styles. Researchers are studying how targeting cultural sites has become a tactic in regional conflicts like Syria, and international organizations are working with local experts to protect cultural heritage at risk.

According to urban experts crime and fear of crime have long been recognized as a major challenge to sustainable cities. It also has a significant impact on quality of life. In Malaysia the crime index has risen significantly over the last few decades. Local authority plays a role in building cities that are safe for people where effective implementation of CPTED will assist in reducing and preventing crime from occurring. Effective implementation of CPTED can help reduce public expenditure in keeping the city safe. The article concludes that the successful implementation of the CPTED concept in Malaysian cities can be achieved by increasing the awareness and understanding of implementers of the concept. Thus, professionals and policy makers should have an awareness of the importance of CPTED in reducing both the fear of crime and crime rates in the urban environment and thus contribute to urban sustainability.

Call for Applications, Workshop on "Minorities and Popular Culture in the Mod...Encyclopaedia Iranica
Thanks to modern mass communication media and commercial entertainment, popular culture has increasingly become a large industry geared for massive consumption while engendering and contesting national and communal identities. Since late nineteenth century, Middle Eastern minorities have contributed to the making of popular culture industries as public performers, producers, writers, filmmakers, musicians, etc. Meanwhile, popular culture has been a crucial tool in constructing public imagery of both majority and minority ethnic and religious communities. Thus, popular culture has been a site of contradictions and contestations.
This workshop aims at exploring the contribution of all religious and ethnic minorities to the popular culture industries and how popular culture products have represented minorities and dealt with the minority question in modern Middle East during the twentieth century and at present. The workshop hopes to examine national, regional, and cross-regional case studies covering the area from Iran to Morocco, from Turkey to Sudan and beyond. Comparative and diasporic studies are particularly welcome.

One of my most popular articles ever proved to be the devastating rejection and denunciation of Pan-Arabism that I published under the title "Progenitor of Wars and Tyrannies: the Falsehood of Pan-Arabism" in several portals notably American Chronicle, Buzzle and AfroArticles in the mid-2000s. It was thence extensively and widely mentioned, discussed, quoted and republished in portals, sites, and blogs. Indicatively, I herewith include the following links:

I must however add that my very first publication on the topic goes back to 1988, and it took the form of a 11000-word entry (in Greek) in the Great General Encyclopedia Hydria (published by Etaireia Ellinikon Ekdoseon / Greek Publications Co) – Μεγάλη Γενική Εγκυκλοπαίδεια Υδρία (Εταιρεία Ελληνικών Εκδόσεων). The entry title was 'Φυλές και Λαοί της Μέσης Ανατολής' (Peoples and ethnic groups in the Middle East). 42. Why is research so important.?
Recent destruction of cultural heritage, including looting and
trafficking in antiquities, across nations of Arab spring,
Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan emphasizes the need
for research. What strategic and tactial value do terrorist
groups and militants derive from targeting libraries,
museums, mosques, shrines, and archaeological sites? Calls
to classify targeting of cultural property as a war crime, and
the suggestion by UNESCO to qualify the terrorism and
political violence as "cultural cleansing" and "cultural
genocide", compel analysis of the significance of cultural
heritage in internatational affairs and the relevance of
Cultural Security to foreign policy and global security.
43. The threats to cultural heritage in Syria certainly amplify the grounds
to consider the role, as opposed to purely the liability, of cultural
property in political and armed conflict. The progression from the
Bamiyan Buddhas (2001), to Iraq (2003), to the Arab Spring (2010),
to Mali (2012), to the ongoing destruction and looting in Syria
indicates that consideration of cultural heritage has a practical place in
security strategies…
44. UNESCO has trained experts to prevent the destruction and looting of Syria's
cultural heritage. On August 29, 2011 UNESCO chief Irina Bokova and UN
representative Lakhdar Brahimi introduced protective measures. The experts
are attempting to keep track of Syria's stolen cultural heritage, alerting
customs officials and art dealers to prevent illegal international trade. UNESCO
Director-General Irina Bokova has repeatedly called on both sides of the
Syrian conflict to do all they can to prevent the destruction of the country’s
cultural heritage amid the violence.
45. Drawing attention to the risks the ongoing conflict poses to Syria’s cultural
heritage, a United Nations committee has placed six world heritage sites in
the country on its endangered list, including the historic centre of Aleppo.

security?
Preserving cultural traditions and representations of
culture, such as artworks and monuments, or
enabling integration of cultures to foster cooperation
between nations. So, one protects existing culture, while
the other uses culture as a medium for foreign relations
