Editor's Notes
Cultivating plants and teaching are fundamental. Gardening activities are natural and interesting at any age.
They actively build skills for a wide variety of people.
Experiences and reflection are part of the activities. Here is one example.
This easy project is a great way to begin a garden with students.
A garden project may be recorded with comments for future personal reflection.
Standards in Writing, Listening, and Speakingmay be addressed with guided gardening activities.
Gardening provides opportunities to practice mathematical concepts.
Science and Technology are natural components of gardening activities.
This expert educator, Dr. Smith, gives his view about lesson choices for meeting Common Core Standards (in a CCSS Webinar clip as former Florida Education Commissioner.)
You may check here and find gardening easily relates to your standards.
Share your thoughts about teaching with garden activities on the forms provided at the end of this presentation.
Garden experiences are personal but extend to family members, school contacts, and the surrounding community.
They can include residents near-by, and those in remote areas of the country and world.
Projects often involve nurseries, stores, public park, extension agencies, and gardening professionals. These real-life applications give credibility to class lessons.
Materials and information are available at various levels – both public and private – for planning lessons with gardening experiences.
