In this paper a systematic approach to the analysis of cross-cultural competence is used. A brief description of crosscultural
competence components currently accepted in Russian and foreign science is given, i.e. communicative
competence, discourse competence, strategic (compensatory) competence, pragmatic competence, linguistic
(linguo-communicative, linguistic) competence, speech (illocutionary) competence, social competence, socialcultural
competence, sociolinguistic competence, cultural competence, regulatory competence. The universal
components of cross-cultural competence of interpreters are defined; their characteristics and didactic content are
presented. The definitions of the following concepts are given: cross-cultural competence of interpreters, linguocommunicative
competence, social competence, ethno-cultural competence, self-competence. The conclusion is
made that cross-cultural competence can be considered as a system that integrates in its structure interconnected
and interdependent components.
This document discusses Hofstede's cultural dimensions model and describes the characteristics of cultures that score high or low on each dimension:
1. Power Distance - Cultures with large power distance have centralized authority and acceptance of inequality, while small power distance cultures have decentralized authority and questioning of power.
2. Uncertainty Avoidance - Strong uncertainty avoidance cultures avoid risk and have strict rules and structure, while weak uncertainty avoidance cultures accept uncertainty and take risks more easily.
3. Individualism vs Collectivism - Individualistic cultures value independence over groups, while collectivistic cultures prioritize group harmony and sacrifice self-interest for the group.
4. Masculinity vs Femininity - Masculine
Igor Berkhin. Meditation as a Culture of Mind.IgorBerkhin
In modern world meditation is generally concidered as a method of either relaxation or entering
extraordinary states of mind. Even though having some theurapeutic qualities, still such approach
is very one-sided and limited. In various spiritual traditions meditation is concidered to be an
important means for aquiring certain kinds of knowledge and skills that cannot be obtained while
operating on material level. Relaxation as well as many extraordinary states can be quite effectively
achieved through affecting physiological processes by means of chemical substances, intense
breathing, sensory deprivation etc., but knowledge cannot be produced this way because it doesn't
depend on physiology...
Japan scores moderately high on uncertainty avoidance, indicating a preference for established rules and protocols to minimize unexpected situations and risk of failure. In business, Japanese managers and employees prefer clear, consistent instructions and dislike drastic changes. International managers working in Japan should approach tasks and communication in a strict, serious manner to provide a sense of security and avoid ambiguity for their Japanese subordinates.
Cultural Differences Sweden v South Korea Jennifer Kesik
This presentation looks at the cultural differences between Sweden and South Korea. The national culture differences as well as organisational culture differences are discussed.
The emphasis is put on the challenges a Swedish individual will experience when being transferred for a job assignment in South Korea. Recommendations in terms of adjustment in management practices are provided.
Gerard Hendrik Hofstede developed cultural dimensions based on a large IBM study. He identified 6 dimensions that can be used to analyze and compare cultures: Power Distance, Individualism vs Collectivism, Masculinity vs Femininity, Uncertainty Avoidance, Long Term Orientation vs Short Term Normative, and Indulgence vs Restraint. Understanding these cultural dimensions is important for international managers to navigate intercultural interactions and challenges that may arise from cultural differences.

Cultural intelligence (CQ)
Cultural Intelligence (CQ)
Intelligence, CQ).
