A CT scan uses x-rays and a computer to generate cross-sectional or 3D images of internal organs and structures. During a scan, an x-ray machine rotates around the body while taking images from different angles, which are then combined by a computer to form images. CT scans can be used to examine various parts of the body like the lungs, heart, abdomen, urinary tract, liver, and limbs to detect problems like cysts, tumors, infections, kidney stones or bone fractures. While exposing patients to about the same amount of radiation as three years of natural environmental exposure, CT scans provide detailed, painless images to diagnose many conditions.
