CSF circulates through the ventricles of the brain, subarachnoid space and central canal of the spinal cord. It is formed by the choroid plexuses inside the ventricles and helps protect the brain and spinal cord. A lumbar puncture, or spinal tap, is a procedure that involves inserting a needle into the subarachnoid space to collect a sample of CSF for analysis.
