Who is to blame, the individual or society?
James T. Johnson is a 24-year-old construction worker who lives at home with his mother. During the week, he goes to work on time, does his work, and comes home. Occasionally, he will go out with a group of coworkers on a Friday evening. He has one other secret. He burglarizes homes and garages in the neighboring communities, selling what he steals via the internet or at pawn shops two counties over.
This past weekend, he was arrested during a burglary when he entered a home where the home owner was present. His mother had to mortgage her home to bail him out of jail. While driving him home, she started to berate him, stating that he has ended up "just like his father, a criminal" and that she will probably end up dying early due to the stress of having a criminal son.
James was angry and blurted out that it was her fault, that this was the only life he knew because his father never taught him anything worthwhile. He said that his mother and father fought all the time, and the main subject of the their fights was his constant drinking.

Do you think that if James were removed from his home as a juvenile, he would have become a burglar?
Are the statements from James about responsibility only used to shift blame? Why or why not?
Research
reaction formation
, and apply this theory to James's situation.
How is this related to strain theory? Explain.
How is this related to subculture perspective? Explain.

Portfolio Project 1:
For this assignment, you are to select ONE (1) of the following Case Studies for the project. A Case Study is an assignment in which a situation (a case) is provided and is analyzed through a series of questions. You will need to answer these questions as you would a short answer question or essay question (depending on the length of your response) for an assessment. The questions and subsequent answers should be placed within a word document with proper headings, title page, and reference list (if outside sources are used). Use APA style formatting for this assignment.
The Case Study is the first entry in what is to be a portfolio for this course. There are a total of four portfolio assignments, with the other assignments meant to test your ability to apply the information you learned to the environment around you. This skill is important as it will allow you to perceive the changing world around you and apply the concepts of sociology in your everyday life. The ability to apply these concepts to the world around you can also be transferred to other courses as well.

Domestic abuse is extremely complicated. It’s not a photograph that registers the minute you look at it. It’s three-dimensional. It’s a piece of sculpture. You have to take the time to walk around it, studying it from different angles, if you want to understand what it’s really like for a woman who is living with an abuser.
Elaine Weiss, Ed.D. Family & Friend’s Guide to Domestic Violence, 2003
In your reading for this week Miller (
The Controversy About Women's Use of Force
) explores intimate violence against men and the validity of the CTS. The author also introduces the concept of "mutual combat" or "mutual battering." This hotly debated and complex issue involves a variety of factors but two important issues need mention here. First, changes in law enforcement policies have created what is commonly referred to as
mandatory
arrest policies
. Mandatory arrest policies typically state that when responding to domestic violence calls the violent offender should be arrested.
Originally lauded by practitioners and advocates as a major step in holding perpetrators accountable for their abusive behavior, many are beginning to rethink their stand of these policies. In jurisdictions where police officers determine who to arrest based on "visible signs of injury" battered women who have used force to defend themselves may be arrested, referred to as a batterer and mandated to attend a batterer's treatment program (typically a socioeducational intervention group for male batterers).
The reality that many survivors use force against their partners, and are now being arrested for such, has led to the controversial concept of
mutual
battering
. In some police jurisdictions the practice of making
dual arrests
in which both parties are arrested sometimes leads to the above outcome as well.
Second, early attitudes about domestic violence identified males as batterers and women as victims. As our understanding of this complex issue increases, we are beginning to understand that gender is not the most effective criteria for determining the primary aggressor nor is counting how many times who hit whom. In particular, gender criteria becomes useless when addressing abusive same sex relationships.

Critical Question: Are there rival causes?
Each of the following examples provides an argument to support a causal claim. Try to generate rival causes for such claims. Then try to determine how much you have weakened the author's claim by knowledge of rival causes.
Passage 2
Why did the postal worker go berserk and kill those six employees? The answer is provided by a close look at his childhood. He lost his mother when he was 8, and his father often physically abused him. Also, he grew up in the shadow of more successful older siblings. As a child he had a difficult time making friends and had trouble establishing a sexual identity. Then, as an adult he drifted from job to job, while developing increasingly bizarre fantasies. Eventually, the post office became a symbol of the society that had caused his failures. To become "somebody," he ultimately turned to violence.

Assignment 3: Twin Behavior: Intervening
Amee and Aaron are 6-year-old twins of Josh and Lacy. Josh is an alcoholic and unemployed, and Lacy works two jobs to feed the family. When Lacy arrives home late from work, Josh is drunk after spending the day managing the children. Josh picks a fight with Lacy over petty issues and starts hitting her. Amee and Aaron try to protect their mother. As they tug on their father's leg, he stops hitting Lacy, falls to the floor, and begins to cry. This has been a nightly ritual since Josh lost his job six weeks ago. Before losing his job, Josh used to hit Lacy on a sporadic basis, usually when he had too much to drink. The children have developed a morbid fear of their father, and they are extra careful not to annoy him.
At a parent/teacher conference, Lacy is told that her twins' aggressive behavior on the playground at recess is becoming an issue. Their teacher expresses concern and suggests that Lacy might want to investigate early intervention for her children. Without discussing the violence being experienced in the family, Lacy agrees with the teacher to pursue intervention for the twins' behavioral issues.

Disorders with ViolenceViolence in America has become rampant an.docxelinoraudley582231
Disorders with Violence
Violence in America has become rampant and seems to be increasing (Bartol & Bartol, 2008). Many experts believe violence will continue increasing because of gangs, drugs, terrorism, availability of powerful weapons, and a growing tolerance of violence in society. Understanding the cause of violence is an ongoing challenge among mental health professionals. The classic debate is whether personality traits or social stressors predict violence (Hillebrand & Pallone, 1995). There is evidence supporting both theories. Several other cases in this book also discuss patterns of violence, such as the cases of O. J. Simpson (Chapter 1), Joseph Westbecker (Chapter 7), Jeffrey Dahmer (Chapter 8), Ted Bundy (Chapter 11), John Hinckley (Chapter 16), and, to a lesser degree, some of the other cases. Here, the focus is on the causes of violence. The first case of Jack Ruby looks at violence in general; the second case looks at the first well-documented case of a serial killer in the United States; and the third and fourth cases consider patterns of violence and abuse in the family.
Liberals have invented whole college majors—psychology, sociology . . . [etc.]—to prove that nothing is anybody’s fault.
P. J. O’Rourke, Give War a Chance
Causes of Violence
As demonstrated by the quote above, there are many differing theories into the causes of violence. Because of the incredible public attention it received, the case of Jack Ruby has provided theorists with fodder for much thought and discussion (scientific and otherwise) on the matter.
The Case of Jack Ruby
On Friday, November 22, 1963, while in a motorcade with his wife, Jacqueline, and others going through the streets of Dallas, Texas, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The individual captured for this murder was Lee Harvey Oswald, who was imprisoned in a Dallas jail.
Two days later, on November 24, Jack Ruby entered the basement of the jail where Oswald was in the process of being transferred to a different facility. Somehow Ruby was able to penetrate a legion of police to fatally shoot Oswald. Great controversy still surrounds Jack Ruby because his connections with crime created grave questions about possible motives for Kennedy’s assassination. There are several approaches that can be taken in diagnosing Ruby’s mental status. The early years of Ruby’s life will first be presented, followed by alternative theories that focus on different facts from Ruby’s adult life (Kantor, 1978; Scott, 1994; Summers, 1980).
Jacob Rubenstein was born in Chicago in 1911, the fifth of eight children. Jacob’s parents’ marriage had been arranged through a traditional Jewish Polish marriage broker. His mother, Fanny Rubenstein, who came with a dowry, was uneducated, emotionally unstable, and, like Jacob, an incessant talker. His father, Joseph Rubenstein, was short, stocky, and mean. He had no trade and was known for cursing, drinking, and beating women. Joseph beat Fanny regularly. The couple h.

Discussion—Sociological Causes of Crime
Natalie will be one of the first in her family to earn a college degree. She is determined to earn her bachelor’s degree in psychology and then possibly go on to a master’s degree, or even a doctorate. However, these dreams need to deal with reality. She has two children to raise on her own, and has to stay active with work as well as her children’s lives. She is proud of her accomplishments and hopes that her children will go as far, if not further with their education.
Natalie’s two brothers did not seem to have the same chances. Her oldest brother seems to have the most difficult time. He was always angry as a teenager and got suspended from school on a number of occasions due to fights. Once, he got into an altercation with a teacher and hit the teacher pretty hard; he was expelled from school. He took his GED at a boys’ boot camp run by the sheriff’s office. When he was released at the age of eighteen, he had a difficult time landing a job and worked on and off as a day laborer. He was later arrested for stealing tools from a construction site and sent back to jail. This only seemed to increase his anger towards everyone. Natalie stopped visiting him and now keeps in touch sporadically. The last she heard, he was working odd jobs and relying on alcohol and drugs.
Natalie wonders why her brother has turned out so different. Of course, they all had the same childhood, and their father was an abusive alcoholic. But all the more reason, she thought, her brothers would choose a different path. She wondered if they had the same choices as she did. Did being a male make life harder? She always thought men had it easier in life. She wondered if her brothers were to blame for their decisions and life choices, or if they ever had a real choice at all. She felt frustrated that, with all her psychology courses, she still could not tell why her brothers turned out so differently.

Case 1
John Rommel was born in 1955 to a lower class family in New York. His father had immigrated over to the United States from Germany prior to the rise of Hitler in 1933. He desired to show pride in his new country, so he worked hard at the docks to earn a living for his family. While he was never made much, he always stressed pride in his work and obeyed the law. He believed this was a firm foundation for becoming successful.

John was not a violent person; he considered himself very honorable, but he did not have a desire to work like his father did, earning low wages for hours of tedious work to support his family. Eventually, John’s employment with organized crime caught up to him as he was arrested at the age of 25. When he appeared in court, his defense suggested that he plead guilty as the prosecution had enough evidence to convict him anyway. When he was sentenced the judge decided to send him to prison for five years, with a potential of being released after three years for good behavior. John noticed his parents sitting in the audience at the hearing, and he began to feel a great sense of shame for what he had done and believed he had brought shame to his family.
Based on what you have just read, and using your textbook as a reference, answer the following questions:
1. Why would John be considered a deviant? What social foundations of deviance appear to be evident in this case?
2. Examine the three theoretical foundations of deviance (structural-functional, symbolic-interaction, and social-conflict). Determine which foundation applies to John’s situation and why. Give specific examples.
3. Choose three theories, one withi.

John always showed a bright mind and highly intuitive nature, but he never showed any desire for schooling. He saw society as an unfair, unforgiving system that repressed those of lower social status. John was not a violent person; he considered himself very honorable, but he did not have a desire to work like his father did, earning low wages for hours of tedious work to support his family. Instead, he opted for more illegal endeavors—gambling, stealing, and even dabbling in organized crime. However, he never told his father because he did not want to disrespect his family. When he turned 17, he became a drug-runner for the Gambino family because a couple of his close “brothers” had become involved in the business as well.
Soon John became involved with more than just drug running; he began to assist the family with offering “protective services” to different shops and businesses in Brooklyn’s lower east side. Should the businesses miss a payment or refuse their help, he would instigate certain actions against the business to cause severe damage, enough to ensure the business owner would seek their protection from then on.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
