Cracow is the second largest

country's ancient capital. It is
the metropolis of southern
Poland and the capital city of
the Lesser-Poland
voivodeship. Geographic
coordinates of Cracow are
50°04'N 19°56'E. The city lies
in southern Poland on the
banks of Vistula river.

Medieval legend says that the city
was founded by King Krak, who
defeated the terrible dragon living
in a large cave located in the rocky
foundation of the Wawel Hill. It is
known, however, that man
appeared in today's Krakow as

Built at the behest of
King Casimir III the Great,
Wawel castle consists of a
number of structures from
different periods situated around
the Italian-styled main
courtyard. The castle, being one
of the largest in Poland,
represents nearly all European
architectural styles
of medieval, renaissance and ba
roque periods. The Wawel Royal
Castle and the Wawel
Hill constitute the most
historically and culturally

7. M A I N S Q U A R E
The main square of Cracow is located at
the center of the city. It
is the largest medieval town square
in Europe. The main square is
surrounded by historic townhouses
and churches. In the center there is
the Cloth Hall, rebuilt in 1555 in
the Renaissance style decorated with
carved masks. On one side of the cloth
hall is the Town Hall Tower, on the other
the 11th century Church of St.
Adalbert and 1898 Adam Mickiewicz
Monument. Rising above the square are
the Gothic towers of St. Mary's
Basilica (Kościół Mariacki). Kraków Main
Square does not have a town hall,
because it has not survived to the
present day.

8. S A I N T M A R Y ' S
B A S I L I C A
Built in the 14th century, its
foundations date back to the early
13th century and serve as one of the
best examples of Gothic
architecture. Standing 80 m tall, it is
particularly famous for its wooden
altarpiece carved by Wit Stwosz.
Some of its monumental murals
were designed by Poland's
leading history painter, Jan Matejko.
In 1978 it became a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.

The mound of Krakus is the
mound located on the right
bank of the Vistula River.
According to city's legends it is
a burial place of
legendary founder of Cracow –
Krakus. It has a beautiful view
of whole city.

10. Z A K R Z O W E K
Artificial water reservoir in
Zakrzowek was establishet
in '92 after flooding the old
limestone quarry. The shores
of the lagoon are one of the
favorite places to rest for both
young and old people. During
World War II, the area was
used as a quarry.

Cracow Old Town is the
historic central district of
Cracow. It is one of the most
famous old districts in Poland

12. K A Z I M I E R Z
A part of the Old Town District. From
the uprising in the fourteenth century
until the turn of the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries, it was an
independent city, located south of
Krakow, separated from it by the no
longer existing branch of the Vistula.
Its north-eastern part was occupied
by the Jewish quarter. Currently, it is
one of the most important tourist
attractions of Krakow, it is also one
of the centers of the city's cultural
life.

13. B A R B I C A N
Barbican is the northernmost
part of Cracow's city
fortifications. It is located in
Planty, in front of the Florian
Gate, on the south side of
Basztowa street.

In the former Jewish ghetto, in
the vast district of Podgorze,
there are monuments referring
to the history of the Holocaust
in Krakow, including the
Apteka Pod Orlem museum
and an art installation in the
form of metal chairs located on
the Ghetto Heroes Square.

A minicipal park in form of
an extensive meadow with an
area of 48 ha and a
circumference of approx. It is
located west of the Old Town.
Blonia is one of the largest
meadows in the city center in
Europe. There are two sports
clubs on the area: Juvenia
Cracow and Zwierzyniecki
Klub Sportowy (ZKS).
