THE MAP OF
KRAKOW:
1. Krakow’s Obwarzanek - Extremely popular, plump and soft
cake rolls, which without any problem we are able to buy on
almost every corner. However, only a few bakeries in
Kraków sell original Kraków obwarzanki.
WSB
RECOMMENDED
RESTAURANTS IN
THE CITY:
2. Kremówka papieska- this is the favorite dessert of our
Polish pope, i. e. John Paul II. It is nothing more than a large
amount of vanilla cream placed between the puff pastry. Its
name comes from our pope, in whose honorhe began to call it
that.
3. Krakow’s Kiełbasa - Poland is famous for many
types of delicious sausages. However, smoked ones
will always be associated with Krakow. And rightly so,
they are created using lean pork, and as spices are
used pepper, salt, coriander, a little bit of English herb
and garlic. Krakow’s sausage is a great delicacy that
tastes best with a salad or freshly baked bread.
WSB
4. Maczanka krakowska - We can also meet with the
name "grandmother of burgers". It is a traditional
delicacy that has become a popular street food over the
years. In the classic version of Krakow’s maczanka
bread and meat formed a separate whole. Nowadays,
however, popular is a version that resembles a popular
burger.
5. Krakow’s Duck - Red, juicy and extremely tasty
pieces of Kraków Duck prepared in butter and served
with velvety, thick, mushroom-cream sauce and
porridge is a delicious compositionthat will appeal to
almost everyone!
6. Zapiekanka na Placu Nowym- Krakowski Plac
Nowy is the place where many people say you
will find the best casseroles in the city. The
popular casserole is considered Polish street
food. It is a baguette prepared in the oven with
delicious cheese, mushrooms and the perfect
amount of ketchup.
WSB
7. Piszinger - Piszinger is a very simple dessert
that reminds of childhood times, crispy waffles
with chocolate cream is something that everyone
likes.
The Wawel Hill is one of the most recognizable and most
visited monuments in Krakow. Visiting the Hill can be divided
into two large modules – the sacral part, connected with the
Royal Cathedral of St. John. Stanislaus BM and St.
Wenceslas with the adjacent Cathedral Museum. John Paul
II, and the secular part, connected with the monarchic
power, that is, in general — the royal castle with all available
exhibitions.
WSB
St. Mary’s Basilica has always been the most important
church in Krakow. This is the so-called parish — the main
church of the city. The cathedral was associated with the
power of the bishop and the monarch, while the St.
Mary’s Church is a bourgeois temple — everything that
took place in it, all architectural changes and other
investments were based on the pockets of ordinary
inhabitants of Krakow.
Sukiennice — the central building of Kraków’s Main
Market Square is one of the most recognizable
buildings in Kraków. It is worth to know that the name
“sukno” comes from cloth, one of the basic goods that
could be purchased here. Cloth is a woolen material
made in a special way, nowadays rarely used, but we
can see it, for example, on billiard tables
WSB
Kopiec Kościuszki is the most famous of the four
Kraków mounds. Kościuszko himself was closely
associated with Krakow; he stayed here several
times, among others, he had just issued the act of
insurrection here, he took his oath on the Main Market
Square on 24 March 1794 (which was commemorated
with an appropriate plaque), and in Krakow’s Old
Synagogue Kościuszko spoke with bima.
Teatr Słowackiego - This most famous theatre in
Krakow dominates its monumental structure in the
building of St. John’s Square. A ghost. It was built in an
eclectic style, but clearly referring to the native
architecture (a repetition of the masquerades from
Sukiennice!) in the years 1891-1893, the architect was
Jan Zawiejski. However, it should be remembered that
the decision to build this new municipal theatre was
extremely controversial.
WSB
Ołtarz Mariacki — The work of Vit Stwosz is often
regarded as the most important work of art that we
have in Poland. The Polyptych of St. Mary is one of the
largest Gothic altars in Europe. It is worth mentioning
that in 1442, the vault of the church collapsed, and with
it the old main altar disappeared. When a new,
elevated presbytery was erected, the townspeople
also decided to fund a new altar.
WSB
The Church of St. Andrew - one of the oldest in Krakow,
dazzles with the beauty of racial Romanism. This impressive,
two-towered building, serving not only religious but also
defensive purposes (it is worth noting the narrow windows
which are in fact shooting holes) was founded at the end of the
11th century by the all-powerful palatine Władysław Herman-
Sieciech. In the 14th century the care of the church was taken
over by the Clary sisters, who moved here from the village of
Skała (near Ojców). The church suffered many times from
severe fires.
Main Market Square - Krakow Main Market Square
is an obligatory point on the trail of every tourist.
This largest medieval square in Europe is an almost
perfect square with a side of 200 m. The Great
Location of the City of Krakow under Magdeburg
Law in 1257. The granting of city rights also meant
the delineation of the main square and a very
regular system of streets coming out of it. This
system, although disturbed by some irregularities,
about which in a moment, is very clear and visible to
this day.
Juwenalia - One of the biggest music events in the capital of
Małopolska.Ready for Juwenalia Krakowskie?On 4 zones scattered
throughout Krakow, students have the opportunity to hear their
favourite artists live, compete during various sports competitions, or

initiators were Janusz Makuch and KrzysztofGierat. One of the
largest and oldest festivalsof this kind in the world. It presents

including Poland.
Wianki - this is a popular,colorfulfestival of
music in Krakow. The form of the festival invites
all participants to a big celebration, so the stages
are located in different parts of the city, and
everyonewill find something for themselves.A
large part of the programme is prepared
together with Krakow organizations and clubs,
thanks to which the idea of good fun reaches an
even wider audience, not forgetting also children.

opportunity to participate in music workshops,
wreath-weaving lessons,numerous concerts
and performances. All events are open and free
of charge, making them generallyaccessible to
residents and tourists.
WSB

most important industry festivals,organized
by Krakow Festival Bureau and RMF Classic.

arrangements, performedby the best
musicians and film art. All presented
audiovisualworks are distinguished by their
considerable production boldness,while

artists and composers,as well as the elite of
the world of music, culture and film, come to
Krakow. The latest works of film music are
often premiered at the festival, which is a
unique opportunity for participants to get to
know them first.
WSB
The finale ofthe Great Orchestra of Christmas
Charity - for many years it has been
organized in cities all over Poland. It is a way
to join Jerzy Owsiak’s charitable work,
involving Poles in fundraising to buy
equipment for hospitals and clinics from all
over the country. It is no different in Krakow,
where on the stage located on the Main
Square, leading Polish stars and Krakow
music ensemblespresent their works.
Numerousauctions of valuableitems and
street quizzesare also held here. In the
evening, a traditional “light to the sky” is
organised.
Lajkonik – traditional fights of
Zwierzyniecki’s Horse is a folkgame that
takes place every year in Krakow, on the
first Thursday after the Feast of the Body
of God.The protagonist of the event is
Lajkonik, a bearded rider in a pseudo-
oriental outfit, who moves on an artificial
horse attached to his belt.According to
tradition, the protagonist walks the trail
from Zwierzyńec to the Main Market
Square in Krakow, surroundedby the
music of a band and a troupe dressedin
traditional Cracow and Tatar costumes.
This event has been inscribed on the
National List of Intangible Cultural
Heritage and is an obligatory item on the
agenda for every Pole.

becauseit is located "underground",under the Main Square. It is a modern and interactivemuseumthat shows the
history of Krakow from the perspectiveof the life of an average settleror inhabitant of the city. If you are hesitating
whetherto include the Underground Market Museumin the plan of your visit, we suggest – DEFINITELYWORTH IT!
WSB
Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University
It is recommended to visit the oldestbotanical garden in Poland – the Botanical Garden of the
Jagiellonian University, which was established in the 18th century. The number of specimens in its
area counts approx. 6 thousand. Plants for the garden were brought from different parts of the
world, including Vienna, St. Petersburgand Paris, as well as from South America. In the Botanical
Garden of the Jagiellonian University grow trees that are monuments of nature – 200 years old so-
called. The Śniadecki Derenie and the Jagiellonian Oak, whose age is set at 400 years.
Archaeological Museum Garden
The Garden of the Archaeological Museum is the most beautiful garden located in the very center of
Krakow. It is located at the foot of the Wawel Hill in the area of post-monastery buildings, which once
formed part of the Church of St. Michał and Józef, and which now houses the Archaeological
Museum. It is worth taking a walk here, especiallyin late spring or summer, when the garden shines
with the greatest number of colours. In summer, many outdoor events take place in the Garden of the
Archaeological Museum.
WSB
Joseph Street
Józefa Street is a part of Kazimierz filledwith cafes, galleries,as well as small shops and antique
shops. According to many voices,in the premises located on this street you can feel the atmosphere
of "real" Krakow. So it is worth finding this street and seeing for yourself.
Great Mykva
Wielka Mykwa, or Ritual Bath, was built in the 16th century for members of the Jewish community in
Krakow. It is located underground. To reach it you have to climb 40 steps down. Although it now
houses the Klezmer – Hois restaurant, a large part of the historic mikvah is open to visitors. It is
worth seeing if, during your visit, you are most interested in getting to know the habits of everyday
life of the inhabitants of a given region.
WSB
