Dear Volunteer Coordinator:
I was informed that I should submit my information to you in order to be considered for a
intern position. I’m applying for a Summer 2016 internship as a therapist’s assistant,
preferably in a location in the West Palm Beach area.
My academic background and volunteer experience qualify me for this internship. I
expect to graduate with my Bachelor of Science in Psychology in May of 2016, followed
by my Master of Science in Management in May of 2017. I will then apply for my Master
of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy.
In addition to my academic work, the range of my experience is from counseling suicidal
clients over the phone at the Alachua County Crisis Center, to serving adolescents with
life-limiting illnesses through the Streetlight program at Shands Hospital. At the Crisis
Center, I received crisis intervention training that prepared me to handle calls from
chronically suicidal callers. During my time at Streetlight, I’ve provided peer support that
is focused on building genuine friendships with the patients. This experience has
involved everything from throwing a themed party in the hospital lounge to celebrate the
end of chemotherapy, to offering the kind of support that is needed to face the reality of
death and dying. These experiences have cemented my interest in the field of counseling.
