Flint central launches the high school a cappella movement
The Flint Central High School A Cappella Choir from Flint, Michigan sang two acclaimed programs at the 1928 Music Supervisors National Conference in Chicago. Under the direction of Jacob Evanson, the 76-singer choir amazed the audience with their musicality, purity of tone, and sincerity in performing pieces from Renaissance to contemporary composers entirely a cappella. The success of the Flint Central choir was due to the efforts of director George Bowen who established the strong choral program in 1918 and hired Evanson, who lacked formal music education but was a talented flute player and leader. WSFCS Link Up Letter
The Winston-Salem Symphony will partner with Carnegie Hall to present the Link Up program as part of the Mary Starling Full Orchestra Performance next season. Link Up is an interactive program that blurs the line between audience and performer by allowing students to perform with the orchestra from their seats using their voices, recorders, or violins. The committee chose "The Orchestra Sings" curriculum from Carnegie Hall which focuses on music reading, melody, and is adaptable for schools. Participating schools will prepare their students to perform several pieces from the curriculum at the 2017 performance and submit an application by May 1st to receive teaching materials. I grew up in Plano, Texas, attending public schools in the Plano ISD. I was very active in the music programs at my schools. During my senior year at Plano West Senior High School as an area finalist on the piccolo, I was offered a scholarship to Oklahoma Baptist University. I completed my Music Education degree as a flute player there in December 2014. I was fortunate enough to return home to the DFW area to student teach at Clark Middle School in Frisco, Texas under the tutelage of Benjamin Katz. I am now currently teaching in Athens, Texas as the Assistant Middle School Band Director. At Athens Middle School I have had the privilege of teaching the beginner flute, horn, clarinet, and saxophone classes in addition to leading the second of three ensembles on campus plus assisting with the high school band. Last year I lead the Athens Middle School Non-‐Varsity Band in their first UIL Concert and Sight-‐reading contest in many years. Their stage performance at UIL earned straight ones from all judges. Since I began teaching in Athens two years ago, the program has grown, and this year we were able to add a third ability-‐based ensemble on campus. In the summer of 2016, I implemented a summer band program at the middle school. Weekly free private lessons were offered to students, and they were able to practice in the band hall as desired during the day. For an additional hour the students would come together to play some of their favorite music. My desire is to impact young students through music education and ideally to return home to the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
