PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC EDUCATION
Music is a divine gift. It is found throughout history, civilization, and within
diverse cultures. It is a meaningful form of expression and part of human intelligence.
Music education is the fulcrum of musical study and must strive to foster the best that
teaching and learning in music may offer.
Music education should encourage a respect for musical experiences, responsive
listening, musical creativity, and expressive musical performance. Students need to be
exposed to various types of music to develop sensitivity to the music of others and
objectivity in the evaluation of musical works and performances. As well, music curricula
must be designed to reach every child, regardless of talent or socioeconomic background,
and instruction must incorporate the backgrounds, beliefs, and interests of students to
provide meaningful experiences.
Traditionally, program size and competition have been used to assess the success
of music programs. However, student learning should be the measure of success. Not only
is it important for music educators to guide student learning through assessment,
assessment is needed to maintain accountability. Failure to do so may inaccurately
communicate that music plays a lesser role among other subject areas. Consequently,
support for the music program could diminish, and decisions affecting the music program
could lack or even deny the means for continued success and improvement.
Successful teaching in music requires a commitment that begins in teacher
training and continues throughout one’s professional career. Yet, in teacher training,
students must develop essential skills of effective teaching in a short time. Research-
based methods of instruction must be used to aid the assimilation of essential skills,
optimize teacher effectiveness, and create excellence in the music education.
