This document discusses the relationship between environmental protest movements and media representation. It uses Manuel Castells' theory that in the information age, the media acts as the interface between the "space of flows" dominated by economic interests, and the "space of places" where people experience their local environments. The environmental movement tries to use media coverage to raise awareness of issues and promote green values, but must engage with media organizations whose interests are often aligned with dominant economic powers. The document analyzes Castells' perspective and uses the 1982 Franklin Dam blockade in Tasmania as a case study to examine how environmental groups and daily news media interacted during a major protest, establishing patterns of media-environmentalist relations that recurred in later campaigns.

This article reflects, from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective, on the challenges surrounding the development of eParticipation in Europe, with special focus on EU programs. To this end, we firstly assess the field’s practical and theoretical achievements and limitations, and corroborate that the progress of eParticipation in the last decade has not been completely satisfactory in spite of the significant share of resources invested to support it. We secondly attempt to diagnose and enlighten some of the field’s systemic problems and challenges which are responsible for this unsettling development. The domain’s maladies are grouped under tree main categories: (1) lack of a proper understanding and articulation with regard to the “Participation” field; (2) eParticipation community’s ‘founding biases’ around e-Government and academy; and (3) inadequacy of traditional Innovation Support Programmes to incentivize innovation in the eParticipation field. In the context of the ‘Europe 2020 Strategy’ and its flagship initiative “Innovation Union”, our final section provides several recommendations which could contribute to enhance the effectiveness of future European eParticipation actions.

Teaching quality to engineering students is a challenge. They have strong quantitative skills but may lack in soft skills . This presentation is an abridged version of the presentation I gave at ANQ congress in Delhi in 2010. Should we consider students as products of teaching-learning process or customers or co-producers in traversing the quality journey?

Good or Bad for Whom and What: A Revised Ethical Framework to Differentiate J...Qingjiang (Q. J.) Yao
This study proposes a revised theoretical framework that consists of the axes of ethical devotions (visibly at the personal, institutional, local, national, regional, and global levels) and ethical reasoning approaches (teleology and deontology), to analyze journalists’ ethical stance of collecting and editing news. Values serving as the foundation of the deontological reasoning approach are deemed as heuristics evolved from historic teleological calculations. Journalism is defined as truthful informing of current events ethically devoted to a larger community, while activism, in this context, is defined as truthful informing devoted to a smaller one. So a global devotion with a teleological reasoning approach is recommended for journalists in this global age.

Reflection on Humanism, Citizenship, and the Digital Society (from Theory to ...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT:We do not intend to deal exhaustively with this subject, because it is broad and complex for the space of a
text. Our pretensions, which are much more modest, refer to documentary research for the understanding and development of
humanist thought and citizenship, and some of their multiple relationships.
Humanism was a movement that emerged in Italy during the Renaissance. It marked a move away from the medieval
emphasis on logic and theology, and led to the rediscovery of ancient texts, the advancement of scholarship, and the
transformation of art, culture, and society. The article analyzes the central ideas of Humanism, such as the importance of
human dignity, individuality and learning, and demonstrates how they have influenced various domains. Humanism is a key
concept in the history of human thought. There are several definitions of the concept ranging from rhetorical humanism, to the Christian
humanism of the Middle Ages, and from the literary humanism of the Renaissance, to the humanism of Compte. There are several
approaches to the relationship between humanism and religion.
Humanism in the age of globalization may be an elaborate form of humanism capable of crossing the boundaries between
the world's civilizations and overthrowing their hostile ways. Intercultural humanism must evolve as a result of the global
debate. Intercultural humanism can replace the current humanism, and thus confront and overcome the many tensions and
conflicts that exist between the world's divergent civilizations.
