James Joyce was an influential Irish writer born in 1882. He was educated by Jesuits but later rejected Catholicism. He studied English, French, and Italian at University College Dublin, where he became active in literary circles. Joyce is best known for his modernist novels Ulysses and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, as well as the short story collection Dubliners. He had a significant impact on the development of the modernist novel.
