COUNSELLING: Professional Advice about a Problem,
COUNSEL:
1.i. Advice, especially given by older people or experts, a piece of
advice; listen to the counsel of your elders.
Use: In the end wiser counsels prevailed.
1.ii. A lawyer or group of lawyers representing sb in court; to be
represented by counsel.
Use: The court then heard counsel for the dead woman’s father.
COUNSELLING: TYPES
1. Guided Counselling , & 2. Non-Guided Counselling

Mentors are a parental figure with whom individuals can discuss their
aspirations, and who will lend a sympathetic ear to their problems.
Definitions:
1.According to David Clutterbuck, ‘mentoring involves primarily listening with
empathy, sharing experience, professional friendship, developing insight
through reflection, being a sounding board, encouraging’.
2.According to Jacobi, ‘mentoring is a one to one helping relationship or
nurturing process’.
3. According to Vickie L. Nadolski, ‘mentoring is linking an experienced person
(mentor) with a less experience person (mentee) to help their personal and
professional growth’
(Mentor: An experienced person who advices and helps somebody with
less experience over a period of time.)

COACHING
COACHING:
Coaching is a form of development in which a person called a coach supports a
learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by
providing training and guidance. The learner is sometimes called a coachee.
i. The process of training somebody to play a sport, to do a job better or to
improve a skill, a coaching session.
ii. The process of giving a student extra teaching in a particular subject.
Extending traditional training methods to include FOCUS on
(1)An individual's needs and accomplishments,
(2) Close observation, and
(3)Impartial and non-judgmental feedback on performance.

4. COACHING
a) Coach

C) Observer
Coaching and Mentoring : the Difference
Coaching and mentoring use the same skills and approach but coaching is
short term task-based and mentoring is a longer term relationship. Coaching,
mentoring and counselling may be differentiated on the following grounds:
Coaching:
1. Relationship Generally has a set duration.
2. Generally more structured in nature and meetings are scheduled on a
regular basis.
3. Short-term (sometimes time-bounded) and focused on specific
development areas/issues.

4. Coaching is generally not performed on the basis
that the coach needs to have direct experience of their
client’s formal occupational role, unless the coaching
is specific and skills-focused
5. Focus is generally on development/issues at work
6. The agenda is focused on achieving specific,
immediate goals
7. Coaching revolves more around specific
development areas/issues

Mentoring
Can be more informal and meetings can take place as and when the mentee
needs some advice, guidance or support.
Ongoing relationship that can last for a long period of time
More long-term and takes a broader view of the person
Mentor is usually more experienced and qualified than the ‘mentee’. Often a
senior person in the organisation who can pass on knowledge, experience
and open doors to otherwise out-of-reach opportunities
Focus is on career and personal development.
Agenda is set by the mentee, with the mentor providing support and
guidance to prepare them for future roles.
Mentoring revolves more around developing the mentee professional's
career.

Definitions: 1.According to David Clutterbuck, ‘mentoring involves primarily listening with empathy, sharing experience, professional friendship, developing insight through reflection, being a sounding board, encouraging’. 2.According to Jacobi, ‘mentoring is a one to one helping relationship or nurturing process’. 3. According to Vickie L. Nadolski, ‘mentoring is linking an experienced person (mentor) with a less experience person (mentee) to help their personal and professional growth’ (Mentor: An experienced person who advices and helps somebody with less experience over a period of time.) 2.i. The learner is sometimes called a coachee. i. The process of training somebody to play a sport, to do a job better or to improve a skill, a coaching session. ii. The process of giving a student extra teaching in a particular subject. Extending traditional training methods to include FOCUS on (1)An individual's needs and accomplishments, (2) Close observation, and (3)Impartial and non-judgmental feedback on performance. 3.

COACHING a) Coach b)Coachee C) Observer Coaching and Mentoring : the Difference Coaching and mentoring use the same skills and approach but coaching is short term task-based and mentoring is a longer term relationship. Coaching, mentoring and counselling may be differentiated on the following grounds: Coaching: 1. Relationship Generally has a set duration. 2. Generally more structured in nature and meetings are scheduled on a regular basis. 3. Short-term (sometimes time-bounded) and focused on specific development areas/issues.

Coaching is generally not performed on the basis that the coach needs to have direct experience of their client’s formal occupational role, unless the coaching is specific and skills-focused 5. Focus is generally on development/issues at work 6. The agenda is focused on achieving specific, immediate goals 7. Coaching revolves more around specific development areas/issues

Ongoing relationship that can last for a long period of time More long-term and takes a broader view of the person Mentor is usually more experienced and qualified than the ‘mentee’. Often a senior person in the organisation who can pass on knowledge, experience and open doors to otherwise out-of-reach opportunities Focus is on career and personal development. Agenda is set by the mentee, with the mentor providing support and guidance to prepare them for future roles. Mentoring revolves more around developing the mentee professional's career.
