Effects of environmental noise on human health

Analysing Sounds
Whenever society happens there is sound. When people are talking, making music, being called by church bells,
driving cars, using computers, or making love, they produce sounds and acoustic effects. At the same time they
become embedded into a sonic environment, which ultimately transcends the single actors. Larger social structures
like families, schools, hospitals, shopping centers, factories, harbors, airports, train stations, and finally villages and
even whole cities constantly generate acoustic environments that people live in. This fact of a ubiquitous acoustic
sphere simultaneously being produced by social action and surrounding that social action as a context has largely
been ignored by qualitative research. Obviously there are some domains, like conversation analysis (Silverman, 1998;
also see Toerien, Chapter 22, this volume) or the ethnography (see Gubrium and Holstein, Chapter 3, this volume) of
communication (Keating, 2001) that bring into focus a particular aspect of the acoustic world, namely, speech. In their
ethnographical study of the workplace, Karine Lan Hing Ting and Barbara Pentimalli (2009) refer to noise as an
important and functional resource used by hearing, or overhearing, non-linguistic acoustics like noisy typing on the
keyboard, the snapping of fingers, the clapping of hands, etc. They argue that becoming a member of the workforce
in a call center is based on the capacity to recognize and interpret significant sounds of this kind within an
environment, which is acoustically demanding due to the general noise level of such operations. But these
acoustically aware approaches restrict their interest to sound as language and as a form of communication. In this
realm the amount of literature is vast, and highly sophisticated methods for research are accessible. The same holds
true for music, where ethnomusicology, starting from the oral tradition of music like folk songs passed on without the
use of notation (McLucas, 2011) and going up to a ‘Global Music Theory’ (Hijleh, 2012), covers the field.1 But if we
take the acoustic environment, sonic effects, auditory cultures, and sound practice as topics each in their own right,
the outlook changes. By mainly considering the non-linguistic and non-musical aspects of sound in society, we are
challenged by a whole new field of study (Vannini et al., 2010). And this becomes even mor.

Population density and noise can have many effects on individuals. Population density is the amount of people, which live in a particular area. Along with population density, comes noise; noise is typically an unwanted distraction. In this paper the subject to discuss is the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space; examine how the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space have become increasingly important as populations become denser; clarify the effect nature has on individuals living in urban environments, describe the concept of noise and examine the effect it has on individuals; and examine strategies that can be used to reduce noise in the workplace or in the living environment.
Concepts of Territoriality, Privacy, and Personal Space
Territories are areas marked and defended by their owners and often used for life-sustaining activities (Territoriality, 2004). The most common example of a person's territory would be his or her home because one tends to personalize and defend what is theirs. A person identifies themselves with his or her territory and any threat to that territory feels like a threat to themselves (Territoriality, 2004). A person feels connected to his or her territory and sees it as a means to satisfying his or her needs within society. Privacy is the selective control of access to oneself and group (Privacy, 2004). A person has the ability to decide who to allow in his or her territory or personal space. A person's personal space describes the emotionally tinged zone around the human body that a person feels is his or her space and can be described as a soap bubble, a snail shell, and an aura around the human body (Personal Space, 2004).
As populations become denser the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space have become increasingly important. As a population grows a person will display territorial behavior and have the need for more privacy and personal space as a means to escape the pressures of the environment and noise. A person within his or her territory are more confident, feel that they have control, and are more apt to fight back than if they were in someone else's territory. The reason is because a person feels connected to his or her territory and sees it as a means to satisfying his or her needs within society. Some of the benefits of human territorial behavior are access to the resources within that territory, status, personal space, privacy, and preserves one's identity. acoustically aware approaches restrict their interest to sound as language and as a form of communication. In this
realm the amount of literature is vast, and highly sophisticated methods for research are accessible. The same holds
true for music, where ethnomusicology, starting from the oral tradition of music like folk songs passed on without the
use of notation (McLucas, 2011) and going up to a ‘Global Music Theory’ (Hijleh, 2012), covers the field.1 But if we
take the acoustic environment, sonic effects, auditory cultures, and sound practice as topics each in their own right,
the outlook changes. By mainly considering the non-linguistic and non-musical aspects of sound in society, we are

Population density and noise can have many effects on individuals. Population density is the amount of people, which live in a particular area. Along with population density, comes noise; noise is typically an unwanted distraction. In this paper the subject to discuss is the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space; examine how the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space have become increasingly important as populations become denser; clarify the effect nature has on individuals living in urban environments, describe the concept of noise and examine the effect it has on individuals; and examine strategies that can be used to reduce noise in the workplace or in the living environment.
Concepts of Territoriality, Privacy, and Personal Space
Territories are areas marked and defended by their owners and often used for life-sustaining activities (Territoriality, 2004). The most common example of a person's territory would be his or her home because one tends to personalize and defend what is theirs. A person identifies themselves with his or her territory and any threat to that territory feels like a threat to themselves (Territoriality, 2004). A person feels connected to his or her territory and sees it as a means to satisfying his or her needs within society. Privacy is the selective control of access to oneself and group (Privacy, 2004). A person has the ability to decide who to allow in his or her territory or personal space. A person's personal space describes the emotionally tinged zone around the human body that a person feels is his or her space and can be described as a soap bubble, a snail shell, and an aura around the human body (Personal Space, 2004).
As populations become denser the concepts of territoriality, privacy, and personal space have become increasingly important. As a population grows a person will display territorial behavior and have the need for more privacy and personal space as a means to escape the pressures of the environment and noise. A person within his or her territory are more confident, feel that they have control, and are more apt to fight back than if they were in someone else's territory. The reason is because a person feels connected to his or her territory and sees it as a means to satisfying his or her needs within society. PGx Analysis in VarSeq: A User’s Perspective
Since our release of the PGx capabilities in VarSeq, we’ve had a few months to gather some insights from various use cases. Some users approach PGx workflows by means of array genotyping or what seems to be a growing trend of adding the star allele calling to the existing NGS pipeline for whole genome data. Luckily, both approaches are supported with the VarSeq software platform. The genotyping method being used will also dictate what the scope of the tertiary analysis will be. For example, are your PGx reports a standalone pipeline or would your lab’s goal be to handle a dual-purpose workflow and report on PGx + Diagnostic findings.

Breast cancer: Post menopausal endocrine therapy
Breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) status is a common and complex condition that necessitates a multifaceted approach to management. HR+ breast cancer means that the cancer cells grow in response to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This subtype is prevalent among postmenopausal women and typically exhibits a more indolent course compared to other forms of breast cancer, which allows for a variety of treatment options.
Diagnosis and Staging
The diagnosis of HR+ breast cancer begins with clinical evaluation, imaging, and biopsy. Imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI help in assessing the extent of the disease. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy sample confirm the diagnosis and hormone receptor status by identifying the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) on the tumor cells.
Staging involves determining the size of the tumor (T), the involvement of regional lymph nodes (N), and the presence of distant metastasis (M). The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system is commonly used. Accurate staging is critical as it guides treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Endocrine Therapy
Endocrine therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for HR+ breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The primary goal is to reduce the levels of estrogen or block its effects on cancer cells. Commonly used agents include:
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen is a SERM that binds to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from stimulating breast cancer cells. It is effective but may have side effects such as increased risk of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events.
Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs): These drugs, including anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane, lower estrogen levels by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens to estrogen in peripheral tissues. AIs are generally preferred in postmenopausal women due to their efficacy and safety profile compared to tamoxifen.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs): Fulvestrant is a SERD that degrades estrogen receptors and is used in cases where resistance to other endocrine therapies develops.
Combination Therapies
Combining endocrine therapy with other treatments enhances efficacy. Examples include:
Endocrine Therapy with CDK4/6 Inhibitors: Palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib are CDK4/6 inhibitors that, when combined with endocrine therapy, significantly improve progression-free survival in advanced HR+ breast cancer.
Endocrine Therapy with mTOR Inhibitors: Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, can be added to endocrine therapy for patients who have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is generally reserved for patients with high-risk features, such as large tumor size, high-grade histology, or extensive lymph node involvement. Regimens often include anthracyclines and taxanes.
