TOPIC 1 Active Listening Skill Set; Assessing your Listening Skills.docxherthaweston
TOPIC 1: Active Listening Skill Set; Assessing your Listening Skills, Barriers to Active Listening, and Improving your Listening Skills
First, we will look at "What is an Active Listener"? It’s a great question. Are you someone who while another is speaking is already preparing in your head your next statement?
I have had experiences where I was talking to a person who was not listening at all. Some have even been engaged with their phones, pretending to listen. It can be very discouraging!
Hoppe (2014) briefly stated:
Active listening is the willingness and ability to hear and understand. At its core, active listening is a state of mind that involves paying full and careful attention to others. Avoiding premature judgment, reflecting understanding, clarifying information, summarizing and sharing are the steps to great listening. By learning and committing to these skills and behaviors, leaders can become more active listeners and, over time, improve their ability to lead.
Listening with your heart.
I am still learning to do this. Yeshua listened to others with His heart. "Yeshua who was a great teacher listened without prejudice. There is an example where we can especially see His interaction with the woman at the well (Jn. 4:4-42 NIV).
Despite culture, gender, racial, and moral strikes against her, Yeshua lovingly interacted with her … both listening and talking" (

)
Humphries (2012) expands on this….
Emotional listening involves a range of qualities: politeness, political intelligence, an awareness of verbal and non-verbal cues, and a willingness to make the exchange enjoyable. (Humphrey, 2012, p. 55)

Activity 3:2 Levels of Listening
Leadership communication is not only about what you say, it’s about how you respond to others. Your listening skills are crucial to your ability to understand and respond to thinking that may be different from your own.
All leaders must cultivate their listening on three levels:
LISTEN PHYSICALLY
Be present. You must be “in the moment” to connect with others.
Use open body language and eye contact to create rapport.
Eliminate physical distractions such as laptops, phones, and papers.
LISTEN MENTALLY
Stay with the speaker—rather than skipping ahead in your mind.

Communication & Challenging Conversations PCMA 2014 MontrealMcKinley Solutions
Challenging conversations are those everyday interactions that significantly affect you and others. They differ from ordinary dialogue because the opinions of the participants may vary, the emotions are high and the stakes are significant. The way in which you deal with these important discussions can have a positive or negative result and can change the course of your relationship. Learn the tools to handle life’s most difficult conversations, say what’s on your mind, and achieve positive outcomes. Challenging confrontations consists of face-to-face accountability discussions where someone has disappointed you and you talk to him or her directly. When handled well, the problem is resolved and the relationship benefits. New research demonstrates that these disappointments aren’t just irritating – they’re costly, sapping organizational performance by 20 to 50 percent. Learn to permanently resolve failed promises and missed deadlines, transform broken rules and bad behaviors into productive accountability and strengthen relationships while solving problems. At the heart of mastering these challenges is the ability to engage in and maintain dialogue. Masters of dialogue create an atmosphere where everyone feels safe about adding his or her own views to the “shared pool” of ideas being expressed. The skills are critical to the success of all leadership roles. Active participants will increase their awareness of the challenging conversations and confrontations as well as hands-on tips and techniques on how to manage them effectively.
Learning Objectives:
1. How do I deal spontaneously with challenging conversations (where opinions vary, emotions are high and stakes are significant)?
2. How can I resolve problems where I have been disappointed by employee accountability and avoid unnecessary costs and strained relationships?
3. How do I develop and environment where people can carry on a dialogue and feel safe expressing their own view.
The Lost Leadership Skill – Listening!
One of the most powerful and overlooked tools in today’s leadership toolbox is the simple act of deeply listening to another person. We are not talking about the kind of listening that happens in ordinary conversations, where people are eager to raise objections, point out obstacles to any new idea, or recall how a similar idea previously failed. This module explores generous listening - listening with curiosity, with a spirit of inquiry rather than the over-used advocacy approach where ideas are debated, fresh perspectives are silenced, and enthusiasm quickly evaporates. Generous listening creates powerful “thinking partnerships” and a “thinking environment” where people are free to be far more creative and productive. Based on Nancy Kline’s book, “Time to Think”, the Thinking Environment model has been proven in companies, government agencies, universities, schools, political groups and voluntary organizations. The language of leadership begins with the four magic words “Interesting! Tell me more . . . “. Although we spend almost half of our waking hours listening, most people have never received any guidance on how to listen effectively. Leaders who master this straightforward approach to listening powerfully can truly transform an organization and unleash the group genius of their people.

How to Influence OthersPresented by Argu, Taylor, A.docxwellesleyterresa
How to Influence Others
Presented by: Argu, Taylor,
Ahmd, and Joshua
1
Good Morning Everyone!
My name Taylor and these are my colleagues Ahmd, Argu, and Josh… and today we’ll be presenting on How to Influence Others.
To give you a background on how we chose this topic, we started to imagine life after college, work, and although we
go to college to learn the basics of business, business is more than just knowing how to set up an income statement,
how to calculate the weighted average cost of capital, or understanding the current economic and political state of
The global economy… we need to know the skills of how to conduct business… which boils down to influence… how
our thoughts, ideas, and opinions are going to impact the people around us... our customers, coworkers, bosses, and
investors in the future.
Learning Objectives
Enhance one’s ability to influence using emotion, charisma, and vulnerability
Become more confident with using logic, emotion, and cooperative appeals
2
The learning objectives of this workshop include:
Gain understanding of the differences between influence and manipulation
Enhance one’s ability to influence through connection using emotion, charisma, and vulnerability
Acknowledge positive influencers in your life and how they have affected you as a person
Follow the Cialdini technique of pre-suasion through a step-by-step process
Make a connection between emotional intelligence and influence
Become more confident with using logic, emotion, and cooperative appeals
Practice the five simple steps to win people over instantly
So let’s jump right in and get started with Influence vs. Manipulation...
Influence v. Manipulation
3
I want to pose a question to the class… in your own words, what differentiates
influence from manipulation?
Could I get two volunteers to share their thoughts?
People often use influence and manipulation interchangeably as at the end of the
day, both words basically mean getting someone to do something you want them
to do. However, these two words have different connotations.
In our interviews and online questionnaire, we posed the question of “what is one thing you would like to find out more about influencing others?”
We received numerous responses such as, “Is the result of influencing more of a positive or negative aspect?”, “Do
people know if I’m manipulating them or influencing them?”, “How to be a positive influencer”, and “Knowing the tools
and methods available in order to positively influence another.”
Which is why we’re training on positive influence today, and clarifying the difference between manipulation
and influence first.
How to Enhance your Ability to Influence: this is my part
4
Connect with People Emotionally: this too
The ability to control the emotions of others helps in influencing them. The first step in achieving this is engaging others in conversation.
5
When a person can ...
2. 1. Listen and show interest in others: Listening a good tool to have. Most
communicators will show interest in what others have to say.
2. Get to the point quickly and clearly: Whether you're making a statement
or answering a question, get to the point quickly.
3. Growth: You will not have all of the answers to every question but there is
one thing that you can do which is to circumvent yourself around people who
have a wealth of knowledge and willing to share it. We all have made
mistakes, if you are scared to fail and then you are not successful
4. Lead by example: In my experience, leadership is about three things: To
listen, to inspire and to empower. Over the years, I've tried to learn to do a
much better job listening actively, making sure I really understand the other
person's point of view, learning from them, and using that basis of trust and
collaboration to inspire and empower. Have faith in the people that work for
you.
5. Read Nonverbal Cues : Watch for signs that your audience has
misunderstood your message by looking for what is not being said
5/23/2015 2
3. To climb the corporate ladder, you
must possess two type of qualities
they are being a good manager and
being a good leader. Manager
directing the work of the group.
Leader guides or directs the group.
