In our daily task we are all exposed to hazards that have the potential to cause eye injuries. Dust, grinding sparks, protruding wires, chemicals etc. To protect ourselves we have to wear eye protection and more importantly, we have to wear the correct eye protection!
Ninety percent of eye injuries could be prevented by using proper eye protection. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the typical eye injury results from the eye being rubbed or abraded by foreign matter such as metal chips, dirt particles and splinters; or by these types of items striking the eye.
Use this NIOSH Eye Safety Checklist to help prevent eye injuries in your workplace.
Personal Protective Equipment: Importance of Safety Eye GearCarolyn_Pope
Any person working in the laboratory should have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), especially when working with hazardous chemicals. This is the person’s last line of defense against anything that can go wrong inside the premises. For PPE to provide safety to the user, it should be maintained, stored, and worn correctly. However, not all PPE is foolproof, and the user should understand its limitations.

Much of the work we carry out day to day present’s significant hazards with respect to your eyes. Your eyes can be harmed in many ways from chemical slashes, welding flashes and inclusions of metallic particles.
Even ‘minor’ eye injuries can cause life-long vision problems and suffering a simple scratch from sawdust, cement, or drywall can cause corneal erosion that is recurrently painful...
Important for vitreoretinal surgery is the non-contact wide angle ophthalmoscope EIBOS 2 with incorporated focusing. The integrated inverter body is extremely slim which allows the surgeon, at low magnification, to simultaneously visualize the fundus and the incision area, upright in the same orientation. At medium or high magnification, the surgeon has the impression of ‘being’ in the eye instead of just looking at the fundus. Optimal vision in EIBOS 2 is achieved with a choice of ophthalmoscopic lenses.

WHO WE ARE
Founded in 1989 by Managing Director Michel Audry, EYRES
Optics has enjoyed continued solid growth and is recognised as
being at the forefront of design and innovation.
A privately owned Australian business, EYRES Optics started its life as
an Australian importer of European sunglasses and eyewear at a time
where there was a distinct lack of task specific eyewear for industrial
applications to suit the harsh Australian climates. Independent test
results on the imported products were dismal and showed the need
for something new – and EYRES Optics was born.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
The EYRES range is vast, offering protection in many environments.
The range features frame and lens solutions designed specifically
for occupational eye protection, intense physical activity and leisure
situations. A large proportion of the range offers the versatility to
be adapted to any situation.
EYRES Optics believe that one’s eyes are arguably the most
important sense of all and deserve the very best protection that
can be afforded to them.

D’ARRASUS QMS
EYRES Optics offers a distinct Quality advantage to its customers in the form of
the fully integrated d’Arassus Quality Assurance System. Located in Perth, Western
Australia the laboratory addresses the lack of testing and quality assurance in the
Australian Safety Sunglass market and provides EYRES Optics customers with the
assurance that its products have undergone a stringent process of evaluation and
validation that meet Australian Certification Standards.
d’Arassus Quality Management System (QMS) is a unique software suite utility
that assists EYRES in coordinating testing and eliminating human error from the
necessary calculations and test result evaluations. The QMS is able to swiftly and
accurately capture the optical, transmittance and impact velocity properties of tested
eyewear by utilising direct connection to a Lensmeter, Spectrophotometer and High
Velocity Ballistic test equipment. QMS then determines a pass or a fail automatically
without the influence of the operator and submits the statistical results in the form of
controlled archived documents into a Document Management System DMS.
The system allows for a whole range of testing, with results collated in a computer
model allowing the company to expand its Research and Development with
measurable results.
EYRES ethos is to not only meet the stringent standards set down by law, but to
exceed them with our own set of standards.
“We identified this gap in the marketplace and recognised to be able to rely
on the integrity of our products that we would have to create our own quality
assurance standard or system to ensure that the stringent Australian standards
were met.” – Michel Audry

CERTIFICATION
EYRES Optics intention is to produce a product that is of
premium quality and value that reflects and enhances trust
in the brand.
EYRES Optics holds five different SAI Global
STANDARDSMARK Licences (the privately owned
Australian Standards Compliance Auditor):
AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 under licence SMKH20251
(Eye and Face Protectors for Occupational Applications)
AS/NZS 1067:2003 under Licence SMKH25364
(Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacle)
In 2007 EYRES Optics developed an integrated manufacturing
system where all sub-contracting manufacturers are
independently audited up to twice a year by SAI Global
to ensure they adhere to standards’ criteria. This control
measure achieves greater transparency, verification and
traceability manufacturing EYRES products.
In the Perth based EYRES Optics laboratory a sample (1%)
of each new batch of EYRES eyewear is rigorously tested
–then destroyed– for optical quality and design specification.
COMPLIANCE VS
CERTIFICATION
Compliant Eye Protectors are tested once to determine
that they meet the requirements of a standard. There is no
guarantee that future batches or products of the same type
also comply to the standard.
Certified products by contrast, undergo initial assessment
to compliance, are registered with an independent certifying
body (eg SAI Global) and additional batch testing and
assessment occurs to ensure the product continues to meet
the standard.
Buying a certified product guarantees:
• ongoing compliance guaranteed
• batch testing
• all components are traceable
• added liability cover.
INNOVATION, RESEARCH
AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D)
The focus of research and development (R&D) at EYRES Optics is the continuing development of materials, manufacturing
processes and product quality for the benefit of customers and the environment.
The global R&D centre of EYRES Optics is located in Perth, Western Australia. It serves as the interface for all non-prescription
and prescription eyewear, and coordinates the ongoing technical knowledge transfer and exchange of experience among the
subcontracting manufacturing plants.
An important goal of EYRES’s R&D work is the development of innovative solutions to fulfil specific market and
customer requirements.

With a significant portion of the Australian workforce currently wearing some form of Prescription lenses, Standard Safety
Eyewear may not be sufficient to reduce the risk, and with our population ageing, the proportion of prescription wearing workers
is increasing.
To accommodate employees needing both Safety Eyewear and Prescription glasses, there are generally two options:
• provide Prescription Safety Eyewear, or
• provide a pair of Non-Prescription Safety glasses to be used over the employees’ corrective eyewear.
Australian Standards AS/NZS 1336 (Recommended Practices for Occupational Eye Protection) specifies the conditions for
using a combination of eye protection with Prescription lenses. If an employee is provided with safety glasses to wear over their
prescription glasses, the employee must confirm that the combination (of safety glasses worn over their normal prescription
glasses) is a comfortable fit and that each item still performs its intended function and optical quality.
PRESCRIPTION SAFETY EYEWEAR
www.eyresoptics.com
9. www.eyresoptics.com
Prescription Safety Eyewear combines the needed corrective lenses and safety glasses into one, making for a more user-friendly
option compared to the alternative – safety glasses worn over prescription glasses.
EYRES Optics offers both elements of Prescription Safety Eyewear – Frames and Lenses. To deliver the highest possible quality
to its customers in the prescription range of products and services, EYRES Optics established a strategic business venture in
2009 with I-OPTIXX, its laboratory partner which specialises in prescription eyewear solutions. Together the partnership offers
total eyewear solutions.
A wide range of fully certified safety frames can be fitted by our lens laboratory partner I-OPTIXX with fully certified Lenses
(AS/NZS 1337.6 - Prescription Eye Protectors against Low and Medium Impact).
For customer convenience and time efficiency, EYRES Optics offers assistance to customers by arranging onsite vision

and are Certified to either AS/NZS 1337.1 or AS/NZS 1337.6.
EYRES Medium Impact models may also be used for sports

LIGHT INDUSTRIES
Light industry applications such as landscape gardening,
transport and fishing require low impact eye protectors.
EYRES Low Impact models can withstand a high velocity
impact of 12 metres per second (20m/s EYRES Policy) and
are Compliant to either AS/NZS 1337.1, AS/NZS 1067 or

SPORT
For anyone working in or around water, the choice of suitable
glasses is as important as the choice of the right pair of
shoes. Optical quality lenses featuring visual periphery,
contrasts and colour for prescription and non-prescription
sunglasses is essential. They must filter out 100% of UV
and the tint of the glass must be dark and natural to better
protect from glare.
Flexible, impact-resistant, wraparound frames combined
with specific purpose lenses (SPS) and lens treatments are a
winning combination for sport and safety in all extreme work
and play conditions.
