- #2 Welcome Class of 2010. You are nearing the next wonderful phase of this miraculous journey called life. The presentation you are about to view is designed to guide you through your senior year, helping you with those important decisions which you soon must make. You will make many important decisions this year including what college to attend, what happens after high school, and so many more. The list can seem overwhelming, but it is all part of the journey ahead. You will be given the Senior Handbook that will provide information to help you understand the different college systems, admission and testing requirements, and a brief introduction to financial aid…all of issues which you would gladly have someone else figure out for you. At this time you should have narrowed down your college choices to the top three to five schools that offer your college major. If you do not have some schools in mind, you need to quickly research your options and select those which fit your vision for college and beyond. We won’t present the handbook word for word, but rather to use it as a guidebook for the journey that awaits.Good luck…and remember – “To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.”
- #3 Please pay close attention to the dates on page 2 of your senior handbook. Here you will find a month by month guide of what should be completed during your senior year. BE AWARE OF DEADLINES! If you have any questions about college, graduation requirements or adult school, please make an appointment to see your counselor.
- #4 Now let’s look at page 3. We have listed all the 4 year college entrance exam test dates for you. You must complete all required testing by the December 2009 test dates. Be aware of deadlines.You can apply on-line for the ACT and SAT at the websites listed. When applying, your application will ask for numerical codes. Refer to the bottom of this page for a few specific codes.
- #5 Preview the University of California system by visiting www.collegeweeklive.com on October 1st between 9a.m.-7p.m.Outlined on page 4are the requirements for the University of California or “UC” college system. The UC system admits approximately the top 8% of California Seniors. All UC schools require the SAT Reasoning test or ACT with the Writing test AND two SAT Subject Tests in two different subject areas. All tests must be taken by December 2009 to meet application deadlines. You must apply on-line to the University of California schools at www.ucop.edu/pathways.You may begin working on your application on October 1st. The deadline to submit your application is Nov. 30th. The UC system requires you to complete a personal statement. Please refer to page 5 for this information. Don’t wait until Thanksgiving break to complete your application. Begin now!
- #6 On page 6, you will find information on the California State University System or “CSU” system. The CSU system admits approximately the top 33% of California Seniors. The same dates apply for theSAT/ACT tests as for the University of California system, although you do not have to take the writing portion of the ACT for these schools. Students may apply on-line between October 1st and November 30th. Both CSU and UC Schools require an online application. If you do not have access to a computer you can use campus computers or those at the Public Library. You are invited to use the CHS computer lab in room S206 every Wednesday in October and November from 3-4p.m. where a counselor will be available to help you with your application.
- #7 Now we will discuss the Private School system on page 7. California Private Universities are often more expensive than the CSU or UC systems schools, but have a lot to offer. Class sizes may be smaller and you may receive more individual attention. Please make sure and visitthe school’s website for their application procedures. They have their own deadlines and requirements.Please make sure to look at cost and their financial aid process when considering a private school. Follow the same guidelines for out of state schools. BYU, for example, requires the ACT over the SAT exam. You may also have to pay non-residency fees.
