Coral reefs are underwater ecosystems composed of calcium carbonate structures secreted by coral polyps. Coral polyps are tiny animal colonies belonging to the phylum Cnidaria, which also includes anemones and jellyfish. While most coral reefs are located in tropical oceans around the world, the United Kingdom contains one coral reef located in Scotland.
