The Hackensack River is located in New Jersey and New York, and is approximately 45 miles long and 30 feet deep on average. It is home to over 265 species of birds but is also polluted from municipal wastewater, urban runoff, industry, and litter. Some portions of the river are used for municipal drinking water supplies after being filtered and purified, but other areas contain pollution that make the water unsafe to drink. The EPA is considering designating the Hackensack River as a Superfund site to direct government funding towards cleaning up the pollution and closely monitoring the process.
