This document provides an overview of a presentation on using geographic information systems (GIS) in the oil and gas industry. It introduces the speaker and his company, WhiteStar, which provides digital mapping data. The presentation covers what GIS is, common data types like grids and well locations, who uses GIS like landmen and geologists, how teams can leverage GIS, and challenges. It demonstrates WhiteStar's GIS offerings and how different data layers can be combined, such as showing wells within a grid and legal land units.
Presentation from 2009 LandmanXchange Conference in Dallas, TX. Provides the concept and need for GIS and GPS in Land Services, Land Management, and Surface or ROW management.
URISA and the Development of a Geospatial Society: Past, Present and Future Greg Babinski
This lecture, delivered on December 5, 2012 at the Tsinghua University, Center for Earth Sciences, Redbud Forum on Global Change Science and titled ‘URISA and the Development of a Geospatial Society: Past, Present and Future’ discussed the development of the GMI, with its foundations of the GIS Capability Maturity Model and the Geospatial Management Competency Model. It outlined the future potential of the GMI to advance the development of GIS professional management worldwide.

My presentation on Data Mining, Lessons from Competitions, and Public Data looks at the Data Mining/Data Science/Big Data evolution, reviews lessons from KDD Cup 1997, Netflix Prize, and Kaggle, presents a big list of Public and Government data APIs, Marketplaces, Portals, and Platforms, and examines Big Data Hype. This talk was given at BPDM-2013, (Broadening Participation in Data Mining), Aug 10, 2013 held at KDD-2013, Chicago.

Entrepreneurial GIS Services: Innovative Practices at King County GIS, 2006 U...Greg Babinski
Greg Babinski, from the King County GIS Center in Seattle, WA, will outline how entrepreneurial business practices have led to the development of innovative GIS services. Examples will include public/private partnerships, targeted marketing of GIS services to communities of business users, an “assembly-line” application development process, and a user-survey based custom GIS training program. The public benefits of web based GIS applications from a business and travel/cost savings perspective will also be described.
Talking about Big Data generates a lot of questions; however, most of the focus is on the technologies and skills required to collect and store this volume of information as opposed to the insight that companies need to derive from it. What factors should organizations consider in order to ensure that they are capitalizing on their investments with these technologies? How do you break through business silos to enable sharing of data to increase organizational value? Leveraging his cross-industry experience at companies like The Walt Disney Company, Travelers Insurance and Demand Media, Brendan Aldrich will discuss the question of “big value” with industry examples and a particular focus on his current work to deploy a “data democracy” within the City Colleges of Chicago.
Session Discovery Topics:
• Big value - keeping an eye on the forest (assumptions, judgment and bias)
• Data democracy - increasing productivity with data transparency and open access

State of the Map Asia (SotM-Asia) is the annual regional conference of OpenStreetMap (OSM) organized by OSM communities in Asia. First SotM-Asia was organized in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2015, and the second was organized in Manila, Philippines in 2016. This year’s conference, third in the series, was organized in Kathmandu, Nepal on September 23 – 24, 2017 at Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, Nepal.
We brought nearly 200 Open Mapping enthusiasts from Asia and beyond to this year’s SotM-Asia. The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge and experience among mappers; expand their network; and generate ideas to expand map coverage and effective use of OSM data in Asian continent. We chose ‘from creation to use of OSM data’ as the theme of this year’s conference, emphasizing on the effective use of OSM data. We also brought together a government panel from four different countries in this year’s SotM-Asia. We believe this event will deepen the bond and enhance collaboration among OSM communities across Asia.
