Optimizing Your Site for Holiday TrafficWP Engine UK
We all love it when traffic spikes on our website - whether from holiday shoppers wanting to buy our wares, some great press and/or from amazing campaigns created by our marketing teams.
But, can you get too much traffic? Research has proven that even tiny delays in page load time can be disastrous to your bottom line. And, when you’re dependent on 4th Quarter sales to make your numbers, you can’t afford to have anything blocking the path to a sale.
In this presentation, team members from WP Engine and MaxCDN discussed ways you can optimize your site in preparation for the holidays or any other spike in website traffic to ensure that you convert those visitors into customers!
With the performance gains promised by HHVM and PHP 7, WordPress site admins are living in pretty exciting times. The PHP world at large is in a proverbial space race, and every WordPress site will (eventually) benefit. But early adopters and folks who manage their own servers shouldn’t be the only ones who get early access to these face melting bumps in speed. In this talk, I’ll be introducing you to things you can do to get your code ready for these next generation hosting environments. And we’ll cover where you can host your code once it’s ready. If you’re interested in attending this talk, a passing familiarity with the command line helps, but isn’t a hard requirement.
Introducing WordPress Multitenancy (Wordcamp Vegas/Orlando 2015/WPCampus)Cliff Seal
Did you know that running multiple instances of WordPress on a single server doesn’t actually require multiple instances of the codebase? In fact, as of WordPress 3.9, you don’t even need multiple instances of a plugin or a theme! Multitenancy can eliminate massive maintenance overhead in the right situations, think server-wide, near-instant updates that let you stay secure without keeping up with multiple sites. And that’s just the beginning of how it can help. In this session, I’ll show you how multitenancy can save time and energy while empowering your users. It’s simple, but powerful.

Ready to start charging for building sites in WordPress? Welcome! WordPress has a great community, and there are endless resources available to you (both free and paid). You’ll be making clients happy in no time.
In my five years of WordPress development, I’ve made my share of mistakes, and fixed my share of other developers’ mistakes as well.
In this session, I’ll share tips on becoming a better WordPress consultant, and on empowering clients with WordPress. Bad or lazy development practices set your clients up for failure, because other developers have to start over when they inherit your work—or, worse: the client’s site breaks and you’re not around to fix it anymore. You can do better.
This session is for you if:
- You know know HTML/CSS, are somewhat proficient in PHP and JavaScript.
- Almost all of your projects start with existing themes.
- Almost all functionality in your projects come from existing plugins.
- You’re working with budgets under $10,000.
Let’s build a better web together!

"Easy and scalable serverless backend for your next mobile or web app", Arman...Fwdays
Scaling and maintaining a dedicated BE infrastructure takes lots of time and effort, and is not always economically viable. Especially for early-stage startups with dynamic products, solo developers working on hobby projects, or a mature team working on a proof of concept. Luckily google provides developers with Firebase - an infrastructure for building serverless BE architecture and many other useful tools for facilitating it. I'll share my experience utilizing Firebase facilities such as authentication, Realtime DB vs Firestore, Cloud Functions, Firebase ML, and others. Examples would be based on an Angular-based web app, but the practices can easily be used with React, VueJS, or any other modern FE framework.
Workshop "Building Modern Web Applications with Firebase (and Angular)", Arm...Fwdays
In this workshop, participants will learn how to build a modern web app using Firebase and Angular. It covers key concepts like Firebase auth, Firestore & real-time database, cloud functions, integration with Angular, and other essential topics.
The web has evolved, and now it’s time our themes do the same. WP Rig is an evolution on the tried and true starter theme model: a modern build process and WordPress starter theme bundled together, created to simplify the process of building advanced, accessible, performant, progressive themes. WP Rig does the heavy lifting of optimization so developers can focus on what they do best: designing and building great user experiences. In this talk you’ll learn how to supercharge your theme development process with WP Rig.

Continuous Integration, the minimum viable productJulian Simpson
What does it mean to 'do' Continuous Integration? It used to be enough to execute your unit tests in CI. But the bar is steadily raising for engineering practices. In the last decade we've seen tremendous improvements inacceptance testing. JavaScript is now a platform in it's own right. Cloudcomputing is now vital. There's growing interest in deployment to prod.So Continuous Integration is under more pressure than ever. As the bar slowly raises for engineering practices, we ll present 2011's minimum viable feature set for Continuous Integration

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
