PaaSTA: Running applications at Yelp

PaaSTA, Yelp's platform as a service (PaaS) built on top of open source tools, provides tooling for developers to quickly turn their microservice into a monitored, highly available application spanning multiple data centers and cloud regions. Nathan Handler outlines the technologies that power PaaSTA and discusses how Yelp uses PaaSTA to empower developers and solve key problems. Video: https://youtu.be/vISUXKeoqXM

Linux, Unikernel, LinuxKit: towards redefining the cloud stack.

One of the major announcement last week at DockerCon 2017 was LinuxKit, a tool to create minimal and safer operating system for running your containers. This announcement marks a new phase in the quest to redefine the the stack in the cloud, which had started with the introduction of Unikernels. In this session we will provide a deep dive on LinuxKit, Unikernels and what they mean for the future of the cloud. We will discuss how these approaches are Integrated with clusters management tools like kubernetes, and show a few demos.

Bringing Linux back to the Server BIOS with LinuxBoot - Trammel Hudson

The NERF and Heads projects bring Linux back to the cloud servers' boot ROMs by replacing nearly all of the vendor firmware with a reproducible built Linux runtime that acts as a fast, flexible, and measured boot loader. It has been years since any modern servers have supported Free Firmware options like LinuxBIOS or coreboot, and as a result server and cloud security has been dependent on unreviewable, closed source, proprietary vendor firmware of questionable quality. With Heads on NERF, we are making it possible to take back control of our systems with Open Source Software from very early in the boot process, helping build a more trustworthy and secure cloud.

This document discusses unikernels and how they aim to optimize application deployment by including only the necessary libraries and system components. It notes that traditional OSes include many more layers than an application may need. Unikernels provide isolation at the virtual hardware level and include only the runtime, dependencies, and drivers required by the application. This results in smaller, more secure deployments that have minimal surface area for attacks and are easier to reason about. The document also describes how unikernels can help address issues like compatibility and efficiency and notes several open source unikernel projects and tools like UniK that allow building and deploying unikernels on different platforms.

https://dockercon19.smarteventscloud.com/connect/sessionDetail.ww?SESSION_ID=281879 Docker CE 19.03 is going to support "Rootless mode", which allows running the entire Docker daemon and its dependencies as a non-root user on the host, so as to protect the host from malicious containers in a simple but very strong way. Rootless mode is also attractive for users who cannot get `sudo` permission for installing Docker on shared computing machines. e.g. HPC users. In this talk, Akihiro Suda, the author of the Rootless mode (PR: moby#38050), will explain how users can get started with Rootless mode. He will also explain the implementation details of Rootless mode and planned enhancements such as LDAP integration.

This document provides an introduction to using Git and GitHub for network engineers to manage network configuration files. It describes setting up a GitHub account and installing Git locally. It then walks through various Git commands like configuring global settings, creating a repository, adding and committing files, branching, merging, undoing changes, and cleaning up. The goal is to provide hands-on experience with revision control of network configuration files using Git and GitHub.

Containerisation is a new player in the embedded world. Provisionning and rapid deployment doesn’t really make sense for embedded devices, but the extra security that container partitionning brings to the table is quickly becoming a “must have” for every embedded device. However, the embedded world has its own constraints. Generic distributions like debian or Fedora are rarely used and tools like dockers can’t build software with custom build-chains the way Yocto or buildroot does it. This talk will quickly review what are linux containers, why they are usefull in the embedde world, and then will study ways to generate container images using the yocto infrastructure and integrate them in another yocto image without breaking the package-based update system that Yocto provides.

Continuous Integration with Cloud Foundry Concourse and Docker on OpenPOWER

This document discusses continuous integration (CI) for open source software on OpenPOWER systems. It provides background on CI, OpenPOWER systems, and the Cloud Foundry platform. It then describes using the Concourse CI tool to continuously build a Concourse project from a GitHub repository. Key steps involve deploying OpenStack, setting up a Docker registry, installing BOSH and Concourse, defining a Concourse pipeline, and updating the pipeline to demonstrate the CI process in action. The document emphasizes the importance of CI for open source projects and how it benefits development on OpenPOWER systems.

Unikernel – an executable image that can run natively on a hypervisor without the need for a separate operating system – are rapidly gaining momentum. To integrate unikernels into the echo-system, cloud-computing platforms as a service are required to provide unikernels with the same services they provide for constrainers. Here we present Unik, a open source (goo.gl/iEesqK) orchestration system for unikernels. Unik handles the compilation of libraries and applications for running on verity of cloud providers, manages their scheduling, and ensures their health. To provide the user with a seamless PaaS experience, Unik is integrated as a backend to Docker, Kubernetes & Cloud Foundry runtime.

- John Goerzen presented on using Linux as the corporate desktop at OSCON 2008. He discussed the motivations, expected benefits, and how they implemented Linux desktops at their company. - Some of the benefits expected included cost savings, a single system image, and relying on public domain software. They contributed to various open source projects to help with their implementation. - They found that things like OpenOffice, hardware support, and virus protection worked well. Issues included some application incompatibilities and needing to test hardware first. - Overall, the implementation was successful. They saw cost savings, stability, and fewer issues compared to Windows. Employees had a positive experience and the company no longer wanted to use

Design, Build, and Maintain the Embedded Linux Platform

Using open source software to build an embedded Linux platform from scratch. Building an embedded Linux platform is like a puzzle; placing the suitable software components in the right positions will constitute an optimal platform. However, selecting suitable components is difficult since it depends on different application scenarios. The essential components of an embedded Linux platform include the bootloader, Linux kernel, toolchain, root filesystem; it also needs the tools for image generation, upgrades, and testing. There are abundant resources in the Linux ecosystem with these components and tools; however, selecting the suitable modules and tools is still a key challenge for system designers.

NML is a project for out-of-band server management that allows for extremely configurable OS installation with minimal human intervention. It aims to build an open-source matrix of server hardware and OS distribution combinations. The current status is that it is hosted on GitHub and has two main members. NML encapsulates intelligence in HTTP and uses technologies like iPXE, DHCP, and preseeding/kickstarting to remotely install and configure operating systems on servers. It focuses on flexibility and independence from specific OSes or hardware.

This document provides an overview of efforts to port Android 10 to inexpensive single board computers like the Orange Pi using only open source components. It discusses the requirements to use the latest Android version, a cheap board, only open source projects, and to have a working solution out of the box. The document outlines the project structure, including mainline kernel with patches, Mesa for graphics, and upstream HWComposer and audio HAL projects. It provides timeline details for graphics and video driver mainlining. Supported boards currently include Orange Pi PC, Plus2e and Raspberry Pi 4, with plans to expand support. The Linux kernel is an exciting world. But if you want to get a working system, it is still essential to provide our kernel a root filesystem. The kernel developers often struggle to find a simple rootfs, adapted to their architecture, together with the tools that fits properly. We will present how Buildroot, a tool for building embedded Linux systems, can meet the needs of kernel developers in the build of minimal rootfs for their developments.
