2. Characters within Short Film
Due to a short film being short by nature, there is usually
between one and five characters, as the length of the
production wouldn’t give enough time to properly
develop a large number of characters.
My production focuses on five characters through
interviews who give the audience a slight insight into her
they are. I used a larger amount of people as their
opinions are more important to the audience than their
identity.
3. Low budget productions
The good thing about short film is that it can be more
universally accessible, allowing for unknown
directors to shoot their own short films. Because of
this, short films often have low budgets.
I followed this convention as the only money I spent
on the production was travel to Leicester and travel
and accommodation in Leeds.
4. Length
Unlike within feature length films, the length of short
films can vary from anywhere between five minutes
to half an hour. Conventionally though, short films
are between five and ten minutes long.
I followed this convention as my production is 5:41
long, coming within the area of conventional length.
5. Relatable Situation
The subject of short films is conventionally relatable
by the target audience but is then altered in
someway to make the concept fresh and exciting.
I feel as if I followed this convention as I focused on
local shows, a concept with which my target
audience are familiar but then went into greater
detail, explaining things that they were not aware of.
6. Todorov’s Theory of Equilibrium
In order to give short films an interesting and varied
narrative, they conventionally follow this Todorv’s
theory of Equilibrium.
I followed this convention as I presented the
disequilibrium of the Leicester music scene
restricting the talent of Flip Like Wilson and the new
equilibrium of Flip Like Wilson embarking on a full UK
tour.
