Traps…..
 Mosquito traps take advantage of mosquitoes’
sensory abilities by tricking them with features
that mimic the smells and visual stimuli
associated with people.
 Various brands produce CO2, octenol, heat, or
light – or a combination of those – to lure
mosquitoes in, then trap them in containers
where they die.
 OPI (%)= nº positive ovitraps
total nº examined ovitraps
 EDI= total nº eggs
total nº positive ovitraps
x 100
Burroni et al, 2013
Burroni et al, 2013
 Minitoring- Sticky trap
 Sticky surface -adult gravid mosquitoes
 No electricity
 Visual (black colour) and olfactory (synthetic
oviposition attractant) cues
 Easily removal for species & virus identification
Degner et al, 2015
 Black polyethylene pail (10/19 L of water)+30 g hay packet
(attractant)
 Upper trap entrance component that houses the sticky surface
(polybutylene adhesive)
 Fine-mesh screen – preventing
 mosquitoes from reaching the water
 escape of adult mosquito
 Funnel made out of plastic screen
 19.5 cm dia. +10.5 cm high + 5.5 cm dia.
 at the entrance of traps
 mosquito elimination & to reduce the entrance of domestic lizards
 Traps were serviced every 2 months
Barrera et al, 2014
Cheng et al, 1982
Harburguer et al, 201
 OPI: 0 to 28.13%
 EDI: 0 to 59.9
 The predominant species was Aedes aegypti, with 84.9%
of the hatched larvae
 PCR for DENV detection
 Vertical transmission could be detected
Cecilio et al, 2015
Lee & Rohani, 2005
Summary
 Traps are efficient method of mosquito
monitoring.
 With some modification can be used in control
 Virus detection studies.
 Economic & eco-friendly approach.
