CONTEMPORARY MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVES
 MEANING OF CONTEMPORARY THEORY
Contemporary theory is a group of modern literary criticism approaches, such as feminist criticism and
psychoanalytic criticism.
 VIEWPOINTS OF THE CONTEMPORARY PERSPECTIVE
The contemporary perspective also includes three viewpoints—systems, contingency, and quality-
management.
 CONTEMPORARY MANAGEMENT ISSUES
There are some basic issues of contemporary management like total quality management, e-commerce,
human resources management, project management and globalization.
 THEORIES / PERSPECTIVES OF THE CONTEMPORARY MANAG. PERSP.
They include:
1. System Perspective
2. Contingency Perspective
 SYSTEM PERSPECTIVE
The systems perspective is one important contemporary management perspective. A
system is an interrelated set of elements functioning as a whole. The four basic elements: inputs,
transformation processes, outputs, and feedback.
SYESTEMS OF ORGANISATION:
A. Open systems
Open systems are systems that interact with their environment
B. Closed systems
Closed Systems do not interact with their environment
C. Subsystem
A system within another system
D. Synergy
Two or more subsystems working together to produce more than the total of what they might produce
working alone
E. Entropy
Entropy is a normal process that leads to system decline. When an organization does not monitor feedback
from its environment and make appropriate adjustments, it may fail. A normal process in which an
organizational system declines due to failing to adjust to change in its environment.
 CONTINGENCY PERSPECTIVE
Suggests that appropriate managerial behavior in a given situation depends on, or is contingent on, unique
elements in a given situation.
It is not universal unlike classical, behavioral and quantitative perspectives.
The contingency perspective suggests that appropriate managerial behavior in a given situation depends on,
or is contingent on, unique elements in that situation.
 ISSUES
Adams is a former communications industry worker who developed his strip to illustrate some of the
absurdities that occasionally afflict contemporary organizational life. The daily strip is routinely e-mailed
and posted outside office doors, above copy machines, and beside water coolers in hundreds of offices
 CONTEMPORARY MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES

o Rapid and constant environmental and technological change
o Complex array of new ways of structuring organizations

o Renewed importance of ethics and social responsibility

According to the contemporary perspective of management, there isn't any single approach to achieve
organizational goals and aims because it depends on internal and external conditions.
Contemporary means something happening or occurring at the same time. So Contemporary perspective
of management is the one approach being applied in many organizations currently.
Contemporary perspective of management is solely purposed to help any organization to help acquire its
goals, evolve and modify itself beneficially with time and help survive in new era as time passes.
Contemporary perspective management includes the following two perspectives:
System Perspective refers to an interrelated system as whole whereas, Contingency Perspective
suggests that every organization is unique and the managerial behavior depends on the current
situation in the organization.
Contemporary perspective of management implies following positive impacts:
It can help achieve the maximum number of human assets.
It can help the staff in decision making.
This approach can help improve interpersonal communications between managers and
employees.
The learning structure enables new opportunities for the employees.
No specific drawbacks can be concluded in any perspective as it depends upon the specific
conditions, however some major limitations include as follows:
Because there is no supervision available, it might cause disruption and distortion in the effectiveness of
management.
As the time proceeds, the competition, diversity and challenges increases which makes it difficult to be
managed.
For instance, a technological company which manufactures laptops and computers adopts this
perspective of management by using new methods and techniques to accommodate their
customers’ needs. The company takes in account the trend flowing in the market as the smart
features which must be a part of their products, thus by following this method they can successfully
achieve their desired goal.
