2. Introduction to Contact Stress
 Contact mechanics is the study of the deformation of solids that touch each
other at one or more points.
 It provides necessary information for the safe and energy efficient design of
technical systems and for the study of tribology and indentation hardness.
 Several investigators have attempted to solve this problem. H. Hertz (1895)
was the first to obtain satisfactory solution to this problem.

6. Fundamental Assumptions
 Properties of Materials : The material of each body is
homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic in accordance with Hooke’s law,
but the two bodies are not necessarily made of the same material.
