2. Introduction to Contact Stress
Contact mechanics is the study of the deformation of solids that touch each
other at one or more points.
It provides necessary information for the safe and energy efficient design of
technical systems and for the study of tribology and indentation hardness.
Several investigators have attempted to solve this problem. H. Hertz (1895)
was the first to obtain satisfactory solution to this problem.

6. Fundamental Assumptions
Properties of Materials : The material of each body is
homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic in accordance with Hooke’s law,
but the two bodies are not necessarily made of the same material.
