This document provides tips for making the most of short doctor visits. It notes that the average visit is only 13-16 minutes and outlines strategies for patients to be prepared and get all their questions answered in that brief time. The tips include getting organized before the appointment with lists of concerns, medications, and medical history; being honest with the doctor; actively listening during the visit; asking questions without hesitation; asking the right types of questions about diagnoses, tests, and medications; and getting notes and instructions in writing from the doctor. The goal is to turn stressful health care experiences into truly informative and helpful visits.
The document discusses health literacy and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It notes that only 12% of US adults have proficient health literacy and 14% have below basic health literacy. Those with below basic health literacy are less likely to understand medical instructions and manage their health conditions like COPD independently. The document provides tips for healthcare providers on how to effectively communicate with patients through relationship building, plain language, visual aids, and addressing cultural and health literacy challenges.

Unsafe medication is a leading cause of harm, most of it preventable, in health care systems across the world. Medication incidents occur when weak medication systems and/or human factors such as fatigue, poor environmental conditions or staff shortages affect prescribing, transcribing, dispensing, administration and monitoring practices, which can then result in severe harm, disability and even death.

The document introduces the concept of a "Libriome Research Core", which is a proposed library research core at the University of Michigan. It summarizes that a library research core would provide centralized shared resources like other research cores, with a focus on information resources and expertise in areas like discovery, access, assessment, organization, synthesis, and dissemination of information. It then provides examples of specific services a library research core could offer, such as support for grant compliance, intellectual property, data services, data visualization, new publication types, research impact and promotion, and collaborations. The document advocates that a library could function as a valuable research core similar to other institutional cores.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
