The document describes changes made during filming and editing of a student film project. During filming, additional scenes were added, the shooting schedule had to be adjusted due to time constraints, and locations were extended. During editing, different effects like fast forward and slow motion were tested, the soundtrack was edited to better match the visuals, and shots were reordered to improve the narrative. The filmmakers had to adapt to challenges but utilized available resources to complete their final product.

3. A record of any changes made while filming
• We had to do more shooting to further explain the narrative. For example we added younger version and
present version of the protagonists to show the time element, that we wanted to implement in our
construction. When we were shooting, although we had a shooting schedule and a storyboard, it was
really hard to comply with the times and storyboard. For example sometimes the shooting would overrun
meaning we would have to reschedule another day for the filming. Furthermore since we were filming in
wintertime, the day light would be quite limited by the time we finished our lessons. Therefore majority of
our filming is afternoon time or in artificially lit environment e.g. the locker corridor, train station etc. We
tried using torch light increase the lighting however this didn’t produce the effect we wanted. As a result,
we only have a few scenes filmed outside that we used in the trailer. In extending our filming, we also
extended our location to inside and out e.g. school field, hallway. This is because we wanted a change of
environment and location to suggest passing of time.
• However sometimes the shooting for the day wouldn’t take long, meaning that we would be finished
earlier than scheduled. In these times we thought of more ideas about what shots to take and use the
surrounding to gain inspiration. Some of the unplanned shots such as the mid shot of the protagonist on
the escalator was thought of when we were at the location. This shot was used in the final trailer, meaning
the extra work and the ideas has been compensated.
• During our filming process, we had to adapt our storyboard to the location, time and situation because
there would be instances where due to the time, and accessibility to good lighting. Therefore for majority
of the shooting, we followed the storyboard however few changes were made due to the time, lighting
and availability of setting. As result, our final product did end up becoming a bit different to the initial
imagination of our final product. However we expected this, therefore we utilized the setting, props and
equipment to the best of our abilities and produced our final product.

4. A record of any changes made while editing
• A lot of ‘trial and error’ went into the editing process. During the editing process. We experimented a lot
with the different editing tools available such as fast forward, reverse, slow motion etc. We also tried out
different filters and sound effects and many more. For example with the ‘reverse’ effect on the commuters in
the train station scene. We trialled out fast forward and slow motion, however after seeing all of these effect
on the footage, we decided to use the reverse effect due to it’s ability to show time distortion best.
• There were also some issues with the soundtrack editing as some parts of the score did not match the action
of the trailer. As a result, the mismatch of the sound caused the dramatic effect of certain shots to be
reduced. This was improved by re-editing the sound and making sure to blend the soundtrack and carefully
check the layering of the sound.
• Therefore, we had to edit the soundtrack and added more to create layers of music and sound effects which
will help to improve the trailer. As well as this the transition needed to be smoother to create a more
professional trailer. This has been achieved through careful re-evaluation of the drafts and by asking others
of their opinion.
• In addition the shots of the “Shuttle productions” institutional logo needed to be shortened. This was
difficult in the construction of the logo in iMovie because the logo is stock motion and each shot had to be
shortened to 1 second and even this was too long.
• The narrative was not established in the first draft due to the order of certain shots . This needed to be
checked again and more shots have been added to the final draft to build the narrative.

6. The images above is the process of editing that took place in order to produce a professional green screen for the
beginning of the trailer. This was made using paint, this software was easy and convenient to use. Moreover with the
use of the ‘Colour picker’ tool, I was able to extract a colour from an image e.g. a professional green screen and use the
colour to fill the rectangular shape of the green screen.

8. Compilation of the titles…
 The two main fonts that was used were ‘Forgotten
Futurist’ and ‘Colona MT’
 Alongside this, the transitions ‘Cross Blur’, ‘Pull Focus’,
‘Lens Flare’, ‘Soft Edge’ and ‘Zoom’ were also used.

9. How I constructed the titles
1. Choose title e.g. “soft edge”
2. Drag and paste it onto the timeline
3. Choose background colour to be black
4. Choose your chosen font e.g. ‘Colona MT’
5. Change size to match the size of other titles.
6. Change the font style e.g. regular

8. I discussed with my group and choose the colour
which we all agreed was the best, and the colour
options were white and black. These are one of
the conventional colours of sci-fi adventure film
titles graphics.

10. Construction of the titles
• The research of the functions of titling was useful when constructing the titles for the trailer. The
function of titling was even more crucial to our trailer because of the lack of dialogue. Therefore,
the titles would have an important role of creating connections between the shots to
communicate the plot of the film to the audience. The knowledge of titling helped us to
formulate and construct titles that matched the narrative well and allowed the audience an
insight into the narrative of the film without giving away too much detail. Titles also help the
audience establish the sci-fi adventure genre of the trailer. The title such as “Time is the only thief
we cannot get justice from” and “In the search to solver the mystery behind her mother’s death”
All these titles suggests a sense of disequilibrium and conflict in the narrative.
• Furthermore the title “a journey against time” suggests a sense of adventure in the narrative that
also helps to create connections between what is happening on screen. The title/tagline “R3:
Repeat, Relapse, Rewind” connotes the science fiction film theme of time travel. Furthermore
these titles help to enthrall the reader’s imagination about what the ending of the film is likely to
be. It has an enigmatic code that ensues it. Also “Coming soon” is one of the codes and
conventions titles in the trailers, it is one of the main functions of the titles. In addition,
transitions such as ‘fade to black’ were used to create the ‘invisible editing’ effect between the
transition of titles. However, transitions such as ‘Cross blur’ and ‘Pull Focus’ was used between
shots and transition between titles to create more connections between the titles and the shots,
and suggest a significance of the two elements in creating a meaning in the trailer. Overall, we
made sure to place the titles equally to consistency allow audiences the chance to engage and
make connections in the narrative presented from the edited shots.

11. Construction of sound
Another interesting editing feature that I
used made it possible to separate the sound
from the video e.g. the rustling sound of the
leaves. We emphasized the leaves rustling
sound using the normalize tool, which made
this sound more prominent compared to the
music track. Thus allowing the audience to
find more significance in the scene where
the leaves are thrown in the air.
Furthermore, when the amplified sound of
the rustling leaves is layered with the
magical sound of the music track it builds a
supernatural/mysterious mood and
atmosphere.
The images show the different sound layers that we added. This was
made achievable by the use of different sounds/music tracks such as
“End of days”, “Bensound Newdawn”, “Dark Lights”, “Emotional
Orchestra” and “Bensound Sad day”. I was able to edit the sound
using the array of tools available in iMovie. Example of the sounds tools
I frequently used were fade in, fade out, normalize clip volume, reduce
background noise and also overlap the sounds. The use of fade in and
fade out made the transition between the change of music smoother
and less distractive. The ‘normalize clip volume’ enabled us to amplify
the clip volume, which was helpful when editing the dialogue scene
between the grandmother and the protagonist.

12. All of these tools were very
useful in the editing process. It
helped us to manipulate the
camera shots to different
types of shots such as extreme
close up, close-up, mid shot
etc.
The ‘Speed’ tool enabled us to
control the pace of the editing by
adjusting the speed of the camera
shots. For example in the trailer
there is a high angle shot of the
commuters at the train station. This
scene was quite long and dull
therefore I decided to increase the
speed from 50% to around 70%
and use the reverse tool to suggest
the time manipulation element of
the narrative. Also, at the same
time giving hints to the audiences
about the protagonist’s ability to
control time.
Alongside this , the fast forward, slow motion
and reverse were helpful in showing the
audience the protagonist’s ‘time controlling
ability’. For example, with the use of the fast
forward tool, we were able to create the time
lapse effect when there is a close up shot the
protagonist at a traffic light cross road. The
character is stationary whilst the traffic in the
background is moving, this achieves the
intended effect of suggesting to the audience of
the protagonist’s powers.
The long shot above displays the use of the reverse tool. I used the
speed tool to modify how much I wanted the scene to fast forward.

13. Audience feedback on first draft

14. Explanation of changes following audience
feedback
• There were issues with the soundtrack editing as some parts of the score did not match
the action of the trailer. As a result, the mismatch of the sound caused the dramatic
effect of certain shots to be reduced. This was improved by re-editing the sound and
making sure to blend the soundtrack and carefully check the layering of the sound.

sound effects which will help to improve the trailer. As well as this the transition needed

16. I tried out the different filters provided by the editing
software called Pic Monkey. The different filters I tried out
before finalizing on ‘Cross Process’ effect were Orton,
Urbane, Intrepid and Dusk. All these produced interesting
effect on the image, however the I liked the cross process
effect the best because it increased the depth and
contrast of the image. Which in effect gave a more
mysterious effect.

However, I was unable
to use this due to the
copyright issues of the
swirled clock image.

18. I came across this website, when i was editing this image on photoshop and couldn’t
get the professional look. I researched online to find a better software to solve this
problem. I then came cross a software called ‘clippingmagic’ after a friend had
recommoned it. I then watched the tutorials from the website and saw some
examples (https://clippingmagic.com/tutorials/basics) I also used this this website to
help me during the editing process (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/clipping-magic-
remove-the-background-from-any-photo-in-just-a-few-clicks/) I then uploaded the
original picture and started putting into action what i had learned. The 3 edited
pictures are the finished product of the editing session. I would like to use this image
either in my magazine cover or film poster.
How I manipulate the background of this picture.
I was able to achieve the wanted effect by using the red and green marks, it make separating the background
from the picture more easier. Moreover there were tools such as zoom in and a yellow marker line to allow
precision in the clipping and achieve a more professional clipping of the background than to the clipping that I
had previously obtained using Photoshop.
I manipulated this picture by changing the colour levels, using the tool available in the software. The tools that were
available were tune brightness, shadows, highlights and colour temperature. I tried all the other effects out, however
the best effect was produced by the shadow tool, which as you can see has created an artificial shadow on the right
side of the image.
One problem I came across whilst editing this image was clipping the background around the hand and the hair. Even
with precision tools such as the red and green marks and the yellow marker guide. The image still looked very edited,
therefore did some quick research and found other tools to aide this problem. First of all I used the ‘refine edges’ tool
to smooth out the clipped edges around the hands and hair to get the smooth and professional effect on the image.
Then I used the ‘hair tool’ to separate out the hair from the background, this had helped to lessen the edited effect on
the image.

23. Explanation of the changes you made following the audience feedback
One of the most prominent changes I made to the magazine cover was the cover-lines. Before the cover lines
were about sci-fi movies such as ‘The Martian’ and ‘Mad Max’, which are relevant to the sci-fi genre however
during my audience feedback, I received a lot of comments stating that my coverlines were not attracting the
teen audience. This is because the sci-fi movies promoted on the coverlines had more older target audience.
Therefore I have changed the cover lines in this magazine cover to target the teen audience. I have used different
film names such as the ‘Hunger games’ and ‘Divergent’ to sell the magazine to the younger audience. Especially
as during our planning process for the film, we found inspiration from these films and associated our target
audience with similar target audience of the real films. An example of a coverline I made was “JENNIFER
LAWRENCE & VERONICA ROTH/The new generation of strong sci-fi women” This coverline would attract a lot of
young female audience. Which I wanted for the film as my film has a strong female lead, similar to the ‘Hunger
Games’ and ‘Divergent’ movie. By using the stars of the other hit sci-fi films, I am able to attract the target
audience. Furthermore I also have the cover line “The Divergent meets the newest time traveller”, this coverline
is able to attract people’s attention and is very amusing. I have also made the important hyperbolic words such as
‘newest’ and ‘Special feature’ ‘Legendary’ and many more in bold to make it stand out. During the audience
feedback for this magazine cover, there were many comments stating the eye-catching nature of the coverlines.
Therefore I am satisfied with the content of the coverlines and the look. In addition there were other comments
praising the professional look of the magazine cover.
There were a few comments which specified that the puff “Win an exclusive…” and the corner ear “Hot issue!”
and the skyline, bar code and many more such as the website details underneath the masthead had made the
magazine cover have that professional look. By following the magazine cover codes and conventions, which I
learnt in the research section, I was able to apply that knowledge in achieving this professional look for the
magazine cover.
Another subtle change I made was lengthening the masthead to cover the whole stretch of the magazine cover.
Although this change was not to big, it has made a difference and an impact to the overall professional look of
the magazine cover.

The billing block above was made using the help from the image above it. Using the
example picture I am able to make my billing block more realistic. From the
example picture I have extracted the information that the names are in bold and
bigger in size. However I noticed that my billing block lacked something and I
searched for my images of billing blocks and found the image above and learned
that I needed to include the institutional logo of the production and distribution
company. This raises the issue that I don’t have an institutional logo in the format
shown above in the figure because the institutional logo was filmed using the stock
motion editing. However I have thought of two possible solutions, first solution is
going to be reverting to the draft on paper format and designing it on online
software or the second solution is to use the symbols and images provided by the
online software. Currently I am in the process of implementing the first solution.
Apart from this I need to add a ‘release date’ or ‘coming soon’ and the certification
e.g. ‘PG-13’ and explain ‘under 13 are required to be accompanied by parent or
adult guardian’ and also the copyright ‘copyright@2015 by Arthouse entertainment.
LLC. All Rights Reserved’ and I need to make a Dolby digital type logo. Additionally I
need to add a website URL e.g. www.repeatrelapserewind.co.uk or
www.R3movie.co.uk or www.R3released.co.uk

29. To achieve this effect, first of all I had to set the tone, brightness and saturation
of the picture for the picture to look more high definition and unique.
Afterwards I uploaded my own texture using the drawing I did for the poster, I
moved the time swirl picture to surround the picture and using the effect icon I
decreased the saturation and increased fade of the swirl because I didn’t want
the swirl to stand out too much because of the paper colour effect.
I asked the target audiences aged 16-19 about their thoughts on the image
above and some of their comments were that the swirl stand out more
therefore distracting the focus on the colour pencil effect of the drawing. There
needs to be more emphasis put on the time turner and its connection with the
protagonist and the time swirl. By doing this the image is better able to display
the time travelling ability of the protagonist. However some positives were that
the picture looks high quality and appealing to the audience.
To be able execute the earlier improvements I wanted, I first of all used the spotlight tool
on the protagonist. I faded the effect by 30% to allow the main focus of the image to be
the time turner and the time swirl. After this I used the focal zoom tool to make the
background and the time swirl have the effect as seen above. Using this effect I hope to
portray that time travelling action is taking place in the image. The background zoom is
supposed to suggest the fast zooming into future or past. In addition I have combined the
time swirl with this effect to suggest the protagonist’s time travelling ability. I used the
focal soften tool to remove the zoom effect on the face as I wanted the audience to be
able to familiarize with the protagonist face, it is also seen in the magazine cover. I asked
for audience feedback from people aged 16-19 and most of their comments stated that
the second draft definitely portrays the time travelling ability much better than the first
draft. They also said that the first thing that attracts their attention in the face and the time
turner. I am glad with these feedbacks as it shows I had achieved my earlier set
improvements. However there were also comments on perhaps making the time swirl
more prominent and more connected with the image.

30. To achieve the special effect on the image: I first of all started with 3 pictures of clocks which I had taken myself. The clocks are
cropped, cut and resized in the online editing software ‘Pic Monkey’ using the tools that I have stated above. When I initially
cropped the pictures, the pieces did not match. Therefore I had to resize all the pictures without making it look stretched or
pixelated and still get a round clock effect. The picture includes pieces of 3 different clock styles, the first one is more modern
suggesting the present and the future, whilst the 2 other pictures have roman numbers on the clock and have more vintage and
classic style, which suggests the past.
After I achieved the outlook I wanted on the clock picture. I then used ‘Pixlr’ to get the kaleidoscope effect on the clock picture.
Similarly to how I first used it to get the kaleidoscope in the other clock picture. I used the same process by changing the number
on the horizontal, vertical and size dial. I changed the numbers until I was satisfied with the edit. Afterwards I used the vignette
filter which produced the black corner effect on the image. I increased the size of the effect from 50 to 56 to make the filter more
visible in the image.
Then I added another layer to the image using the halftone filter. This filter added the lined effect on the image and made it look
more eye catching and unique. I changed the point size and multiplier setting by making them smaller to achieve the final look.
After this I rotated the canvas from landscape to portrait so that the image will be the same size as a real movie poster.
Overall, I am happy with the effect I was able to achieve in this editing session. The image is supposed to symbolize the time
travelling element of the film, this is shown through the kaleidoscope effect. This effect has distorted the picture of the clock and
suggests a distortion and control of time, which the protagonist has.
I might use this as a background for either my poster or magazine cover.

31. To achieve this effect I used pic monkey. After uploading the background image that I created, I layered on top the picture of the
protagonist holding the time turner using the ‘overlay’ tool. Afterwards I erased the white background, and in order to get a more
professional finish on the erasing, I had to frequently change the number on the eraser size and hardness for doing the edges and
the sides of the picture, especially around the hair and hands.
After I finished changing the background, I experimented around with the fade and colour tool to see the different effects the tools
had on the picture. The first effect I liked of the fade was when it was set at 52%, the effect is displayed on the top. I liked this effect
on the images because connotes the characters ability control and distort time. Furthermore the time turner is in the middle, which
could help with the linking of ideas between the background and the layered image.
However few of the comments in the audience feedback stated the focus in more on the background rather than the image,
therefore in the next editing session I decreased the fade effect to 10%. I also experimented with the ‘Blend modes’, there were
other options such as ‘Darken’, ‘Screen’ and ‘Difference’. All of theses effects made the background more prominent on the
protagonist face, which could possibly make the image quite overwhelming.

32. After trial and error process with other picture editing websites such as ‘Pic
Monkey’. I used ‘Pixlr’ to get the kaleidoscope effect for the clock pictures.
The effect of the edited picture is supposed to symbolise the distortion of
time as shown by the distortion of the clock picture. The purpose of the
picture is to signify the protagonist’s special time travelling ability. Although
the picture may not speak time travelling ability however the picture in
combination with titles and taglines and other content could portray it more
effectively than just an image of the protagonist.
To achieve this effect:
First I uploaded the picture of the clock I personally took myself.
Then opened the adjustment icon and after trialling other effects
such as halftone, vignette, tilt shift etc. I came to the conclusion that
Kaleidoscope was the best effect out those in achieving the purpose
of the image. The kaleidoscope tool allowed me to adjust the size of
the effect, I made the kaleidoscope more focused by increasing the
size and changed the vertical number to around 30 to move the
concentration of the kaleidoscope effect in the middle. The reason
why I did this is because I wanted to put another layer with the
protagonist’s image in the middle. The effect of this is that it will
emphasise the protagonist face and the time turner in hand. It will
also help the audience make connections between the background
image, the protagonist and the time turner. I will be able to present
the plot of the film, the character and the narrative of the film. As a
result more of our target audience will be interested in watching the
film.
The final effect
I tried the same effect on this picture I joined together using pic
monkey and the frame tool. The image is a combination of 3
different clocks cropped and cut together to look like one clock.
In ‘Pixlr’ I went through the same process of making the
kaleidoscope effect using the adjustment icon and modifying the
positing and size of the image. Below is the final product and this
image has also been effective in showing the distortion of time I
wanted to portray. The image looks like an illusion and interesting
to look. I might use this for my poster or magazine cover because I
am more pleased with the outcome of this. Plus I believe the teen
audience will be attracted by this editing effect.
