Have many services? Writing new ones often? If so middleware can help you cut down on the ceremony for writting new services and at same time consolidate the handling of cross cutting concerns. But what is middleware? OWIN and ASP.NET Core both have a concept of middleware. What are they? How do they help? In this talk we will dive into the code, write some middleware and show how middleware helps you handle cross-cutting concerns in an isolated and re-usable way across your services. I'll compare and contrast the OWIN and ASP.NET Core middleware concepts and talk about where each is appropriate.

Chef is an open source framework for managing infrastructure as code. It uses a declarative language and recipes to describe and configure systems to match a desired state. Chef works by having clients pull policies from a server and apply them locally, then reporting the state back. Cisco and Chef are working together to bring official Chef support to Cisco's NX-OS and IOS-XR platforms through Omnibus packages and a Cisco cookbook with resources for managing Cisco devices. This will allow network infrastructures to be managed as code through testing, versioning, and continuous delivery practices.

Reducing MTTR and False Escalations: Event Correlation at LinkedIn
LinkedIn’s production stack is made up of over 900 applications and over 2200 internal API’s. With any given application having many interconnected pieces, it is difficult to escalate to the right person in a timely manner.
In order to combat this, LinkedIn built an Event Correlation Engine that monitors service health and maps dependencies between services to correctly escalate to the SRE’s who own the unhealthy service.
We’ll discuss the approach we used in building a correlation engine and how it has been used at LinkedIn to reduce incident impact and provide better quality of life to LinkedIn’s oncall engineers.

What's new in ASP.NET vNext
Gunnar Peipman discusses what's new in ASP.NET vNext. Key updates include support for true side-by-side deployment, a cloud optimized .NET Core runtime that takes up only 11MB, and ASP.NET components being merged into a single framework. ASP.NET vNext apps are designed to be cloud ready. The new K runtime features multiple layers including the CLR native host and managed entry point. KVM and KPM are also introduced as tools for managing the K runtime and packages.

Thibault Charbonnier presented on using Kong as an API gateway to manage APIs and microservices. He began with an overview of why an API gateway is useful both for building and running APIs. He then demonstrated Kong, including adding an API, applying a plugin, and making a request through the gateway. Traditional .NET development frameworks tend to be big, and cover all possible eventualities, and for many projects this is A Good Thing. But for just as many, if not more, projects, a full one size fits all service solution like WCF is just overkill, and adds unnecessary complexity. This is A Bad Thing. In this talk, I'll go over a lightweight, low-ceremony approach to creating a public APIs for the web in .NET. I will show how to use REST and the Nancy framework to create service applications with less code, less cruft and fewer maintenance headaches. We'll follow the super-duper happy path of Nancy, .NET's answer to Ruby's ultra-lightweight Sinatra framework, to create RESTfull API's that takes full advantage of HTTP and it's ubiquity to make building client applications equally enjoyable.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.

Closing talk for the Performance Engineering track at Community Over Code EU (Bratislava, Slovakia, June 5 2024) https://eu.communityovercode.org/sessions/2024/why-apache-kafka-clusters-are-like-galaxies-and-other-cosmic-kafka-quandaries-explored/ Instaclustr (now part of NetApp) manages 100s of Apache Kafka clusters of many different sizes, for a variety of use cases and customers. For the last 7 years I’ve been focused outwardly on exploring Kafka application development challenges, but recently I decided to look inward and see what I could discover about the performance, scalability and resource characteristics of the Kafka clusters themselves. Using a suite of Performance Engineering techniques, I will reveal some surprising discoveries about cosmic Kafka mysteries in our data centres, related to: cluster sizes and distribution (using Zipf’s Law), horizontal vs. vertical scalability, and predicting Kafka performance using metrics, modelling and regression techniques. These insights are relevant to Kafka developers and operators.
