Over half the world's population now lives in cities, but evidence that nature is essential to our wellbeing continues to grow. At the same time, software design is recovering from an an engagement fallacy that champions addiction to our screens. The emergence of the internet of things is poised to capitalize on that attention economy. In designing connected experiences, we have an opportunity: enhance a physical relationship with the world around us, don't distract from it. How might a connected world actually help us reconnect?

The Urban Explorations Project began as an investigation on the ordinary happenings and encounters in the Singapore heartlands, narrated through the retrieval of sound, colors, smells, soil samples, found objects, behavioral observations and traffic patterns. It stems from an interest in documenting the various phenomena of the urban landscape. Driven by a low-tech and location-based approach in collecting small data rather than making use of digitally available big data sets, the participants discuss, conceptualise and design their own methods and strategies to collect, document and express data. For this presentation, I will speak about two explorations conducted in Singapore and in Paris. Given the vast quantity of big data collected from urban environments, how can small data collected by individuals at community levels be as engaging and important in studying our urban landscapes?
